i don't think enough people put the necessary amount of toxic masculinity in fan media about mondo. i understand that you want him to be likeable and as a woman, i understand that liking a man who puts his performance of masculinity as his priority is difficult, but that's the point! mondo was raised in a heavily masculine environment and learnt all his behaviors from the people in said environment. he feels weak because he was raised surrounded by people who were the ideal of a man, and now that he's older and has failed on what he was raised is a key element to being a man, protect your loved ones, he can never live up to his image of a man and therefore can never really fit in anywhere. no matter where he is, he is performing a fake version of himself that is so deeply detached from his true self and it would take years of confronting this behavior in small doses to heal from that deep rooted insecurity.
sometimes people add in ishimondo fics the aspect of mondo struggling with internalized homophobia, but it kind of upsets me that very few go into that because, granted, it is a very personal and difficult subject to convey to an audience. however i also feel like it would be such a huge aspect of the beginning stages of their relationship. i see mondo struggling to make it public, or if they did, struggling to act normal or even be a good partner to taka. something that people should play around with more is mondo's internal conflict with having to be seen as the man of the relationship, while taka is also very much masculine and not at all feminine is the relationship norms kind of way. mondo would go above and beyond to seem more manly, like getting aggressive, possessive, or simply just trying appear bigger and stronger through excess exercise or becoming even louder and bolder in his daredevil bad boy behavior.
he would eventually be able to work through it with the support of his friends and classmates, who would definitely make it known how annoying and toxic he's being, but it would take ages and would most definitely not be the short one chapter time frame that some authors make it out to be. no hate of course, taking the leap and writing anything is better than not of course, I'm just picky and love character studies.
