His question made me still. I hadn’t expected him to sound so…cheerful. He looked so tense during the ceremony and now he seems like a completely different person. I’ve always thought of orcs as brutal creatures that never smiled. So when I saw his boyish grin I was a bit stunned.
I snapped out of my baffled state when I saw his expression change and I realized I was staring, “y-yes.” I mentally cursed myself for stuttering, knowing that it’s something I could possibly get punished for.
He smiled again, a softer look in his eyes this time, “I know you’re scared, I’m sure anyone would be in your position. But you don’t have to worry,” He said, hesitantly grabbing my hand in his. “I won’t force you to do anything I swear. Take your time little one.” Once he finished speaking he placed a gentle kiss on the back of my hand.
I simply nodded in response, not being able to form words in my flustered state. He let go of my hand and turned his head to look out the window.
The rest of the carriage trip was spent in silence save for his occasional humming. I spent that time re-evaluating everything I’ve ever thought about orcs. My parents had me convinced that I would be beaten regularly by my husband. But the way he said those words seemed so genuine. He doesn’t act like the brute I believed him to be.
Once the carriage reached the tribe many orcs and, to my surprise, humans stopped what they were doing to wave at us. Garekk caught my bewildered expression and chuckled. “It’s not uncommon for orcs and humans to marry,” he stated, calming my nerves about being the only human in the tribe.
The carriage stopped before a humble cottage a little ways off from the rest of the tribe. Garekk stepped out first, then turned and held out his hand to me. I gingerly placed my hand in his, letting him gently pull me out. When my feet were safely on the ground he placed his large hand on my back and led me inside.
The cottage felt so….cozy. It felt like a home. My parents house never felt like this. It was just a roof over our heads, this place though, it truly feels like it’s full of happiness. I let my eyes wander over the room we were in. There was a giant sofa facing the fireplace. It looked like I could sink into the sofa and never be seen again. The two chairs on either side of the sofa looked the same.
“Well I’ll just sit your bags in the bedroom and let you get freshened up. And then I’ll give you the grand tour,” he said, leading me down the hall.
“The bathroom is just through that door,” he pointed to a door next to the dresser. “I’ll give you some privacy now, come to the lounge when you’re ready.” I mumbled a quiet thank you in response. He smiled once more before walking out of the room, shutting the door gently behind him. Only when I heard his steps fade did I let out a breath that I hadn’t realized I’d been holding in. I walked over to the exceptionally large bed and hesitantly sat down. Another sigh passed my lips as I felt myself sink into the bed. I’ve never been on a bed so comfortable. I realized that he’s waiting for me in the lounge and immediately stood back up. One of my mother’s lessons going through my head.
“Now Adeline, never leave a man waiting incase he realizes that you’re not worth the wait.” One good thing about this marriage is that I won’t have to see my mother again, hopefully.
I made my way to the the bathroom after ripping off that ridiculous gown and slipping on one of my more comfortable dresses. I swear I will never wear a corset again. My mother had it tied much too tight for my liking. I’m surprised I made it this far without fainting. Once in the bathroom I did my best not to look in the mirror. My face surely looks worse than it did during the ceremony.
After managing to get all the gunk off of my face while avoiding the mirror and forcing a comb through my hair I stepped out into the hall. I heard a faint humming coming from the lounge and took small steps in that direction. He stopped humming when he noticed me in the doorway. “Oh thank the gods, I was afraid your face really looked like that.” I laughed a bit at that, causing another breathtaking smile to take over his face.
“I suppose I did look look a bit ridiculous,” I said with a smile of my own.
“I don’t understand what the point of all that makeup is, you look so beautiful this way.” He said, making a blush cover my face.
“My mother thought that it would make me look better”
“Well she was wrong.” He said in a joking manner, then turning to the table in front of the sofa he picked up a large tray and turned back to me he said, “come sit, I thought we could eat before I show you around.”
“O-oh thank you,” I scurried over to sit down beside him. He carefully handed me a plate after I took a seat beside him. The plate had more on it than I could ever finish in one sitting. Looking over at Garekk’s plate I noticed it held much more than mine.
Garekk caught me staring and raised an eyebrow, “is something wrong?”
“Um, it’s just a bit much for me.” I said softly, gesturing to my plate.
“It’s alright little one, you don’t have to eat all of it.” I nodded and began to eat. The rest of our meal was spent in silence. Once we were finished he grabbed our plates and stood then made his way out of the room. I stayed in my spot and nervously played with my fingers until he got back.
“How about that tour?”
It only took about 10 minutes for Garekk to show me around the house. Apparently his grandfather had built the house when the tribe first settled here. His father was raised here and so was he.
“We should get some sleep” he said, once again leading me to the bedroom. I started to feel nervous again, it is our wedding night after all. He must’ve caught sight of my fearful expression because he knelt down in front of me and said, “hey, no need to worry, remember. I won’t force you to do anything, I swear. You’re safe here little one, nothing bad will happen to you.”
“O-okay”
With that he lead me in to our room, telling me that I could change in the bathroom. After getting into my nightclothes I stepped back into the bedroom and blushed when my eyes landed on Garekk. He was sitting on the bed, shirtless. I kept my eyes on the ground as I made my way over to the bed. As I was pulling the covers over me Garekk blew out the candle on the nightstand and layed down next to me.
“Good night Adeline.”
