A quick post to show it finally up and done, badges made, statements at the correct height and book on the plinth!
The fishbowl kind of thing was too small which is a shame because it was only a pound! But I bought this taller vase which works okay. I wanted it to be clear so that you can see all the badges inside and so that it didn’t detract from the sculptures!
Now starting on making 125 badges!! Testing out colours and different papers to get the best quality and clarity in the badges so they are bright and easy to read. I want to display them in some kind of clear container on a plinth next to my book, but I need to find one!
It’s a shame because they are so high up, the light from the glass roof is obscut=ring the colours a bit and making it hard to get a photo, but I’ll get some good ones on Monday when it comes back down! I’m so glad it’s worked, I’m actually really proud that my calculations and planning all worked out!!
We put it up once, then saw any adjustments- just 2 wires had to be moved over becuase they were affecting how the others hung. So, when we brought it back down again we changes these then cut all excess wire on the statements becuase no adjustments need to be made thankfully. Steph said not to bother cutting the excess wire and cable tie on the rig so we left it, then it went straight back up but this time to the roof as there are exams in the afternoon. But all in all, very successful! Took about 3 hours in total. The only thing is, I didn’t manage to get any good pictures of it because it went =straight to the roof, so I’ll have to get some from the first floor.
Attaching to the rig! This went surprisingly smoothly after all the stress of lengths and stuff. And I had my happy helpers who were an amazing help! It got a bit more complicated the longer the wires got, and we had to make sure the longer wires went behind the shorter ones, so that it didn’t look messy.
Books in the gallery space! Getting very real now!
Fire Proofing! Doing a quick test to make sure it doesn’t run or anything.
Reinforcing, measuring, tying and rolling! All done now! God it takes longer than you expect (partly because no two string length was the same because of the different heights of the letters0, especially as the longest lengths are 497cm which is a lot of wire not to tangle!! But it’s done!! So everything is ready to go bar the fireproofing of them!
It’s very hard to not get a few mm out when tying knots and measuring the string, partly because the string is so long I can’t stretch it out properly! But I tried it with Man-up with only slight errors in measurements and its absolutely fine, you can’t even tell! So that’s really good and has made me a lot calmer.
IT WORKED!!! I don’t believe it! I’m so glad! The left image is how it would look from far away/ if you were about 3m tall, and the right is if you are looking at the correct viewpoint in relation to the scale. Right, now to get to measuring and knot tying!!
Here is a spreadsheet with all the correct measurements and string lengths. I’m going to make another model in the morning to ensure that it is correct! Need to get some new, clean acetate rather than the very complicated thing I made last tie!
This is what I mean, i think I’m going to have to work it out like this- make it into a graph and use the upper and lower heights for each statement to plot as points. May take a while!
I decided that i would move to the front of the rig, as the back is basically against the wall, but, that means that you can only stand about 3m back from the installation, meaning how I have laid it out now will not work, because some of the statements on the front plane will obscure those on the back because the viewpoint has completely changed. I made a quick model using acetate to help visualise (but the acetate had already been used for printing so it’s pretty hard to see but I get it!)
So, the bottom image is if you were viewing it from far off/if you were really tall, but the top of the little white pole is where your eye level will actually be, and the top image is what you’ll actually see- the statements start to overlap and you can’t read it all. This wouldn’t be so bad because obviously you can move around and read them all- that is the whole idea- but, as you can see on the model, the bottom gaps stay pretty much the same and then the gaps start to get larger and the whole thing is distorted, so basically it looks messy. It either needs to all deliberately jumbled or all perfectly spaced and I want it perfectly spaced if it’s feasible! I think this is going to take quite a lot of calculations to work it out, I might have to ask Connor to help me! This is very annoying, don’t know why I didn’t think about this before hand, I suppose because I was thinking you’s have a good 10m to stand back and view it but ah well, need to get cracking so that I can start attaching the correct lengths. I want at least a couple done before hanging starts for everyone else on tuesday, as it took me about 4 hours to do Boys Don’t Cry because of reinforcing all the stitching too, and I’ve got 12 more to do before 9 am on Friday!
I’ve measured out the weights of each using luggage scales! So now I know the exact weight I know how many strings to attach, so for What a Good Boy, which is 4kg, I will attach at least 4 (I think I will do 5 as then the letters will sit better). I’ve worked out I’ll have 60 strings in total, so better get started on measuring!
The rings have arrived and it seems to work really well! I’ve used the Fisherman’s ‘uni’ knot which is quite simple once you get your head round it. And the cable tie sits nicely with the ring so that is great! Only thing is, I think it will be best to attach the ring first, and then measure the length and stitch it in, because it is very hard to tie this uni knot at a specific point, whereas the stitching is much more flexible! So, I’ll go with that.
At the dawn of an intersectional movement, artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh shares how she's making a statement through illustration and "Stop Telling Women to Sm...
Tghis is really interesting- she’s making art o go on the street ‘so that people don’t have to go to a gallery to see it’ (sort of what I’m trying to do with the badges). Drawings of a woman with the bold caption ‘Stop telling women to smile’ - black and white pencil drawing- quite a contrast to what is on the street with the rest of the graffiti.
I also think it’s interesting what she says at the beginning of the video- that not everyone should feel they have to make art for a social, political purpose, but that they are missing out on a great opportunity to do so. Not everything needs to be overtly political, but it’s important to express something you are passionate about.
