how long til swords are a fashion item ? Maybe knives first ?

I would say swords would be carried strictly for fashion first, because knives are more likely to be carried for utility. I would say that cosplay is a specific subset of fashion, and swords are already being incorporated into a bunch of cosplay. The future is now. It will just take one, brave soul to take it into the mainstream.
