Skurge wasn't alone in his irritation. Before him, the young Vanir had terrorized the unsuspecting musicians of the parade. He'd snatched a trumpet and, after a poor attempt at playing it and a brief fight with the musician who took their trumpet back, Sune found himself next to the Executioner. Perhaps it wasn't very wise to anger someone wielding that title, but the itch to play something, anything, was stronger.
"Ah!" Sune complained when his fun was interrupted. How terribly rude. A small frown took over his young features. "I jest! Have you no sense of humor?"
"When it involves my exposed scalp, no I don't." Skurge wasn't exactly sensitive about his lack of hair, but he still didn't appreciate it being used for someone else's amusement.
"You are either as bored as Loki in an empty room or you are choosing to be a menace on purpose. Is there some other way to vent all of this brewing within you that don't involve slapping the top of my head?" He would take any suggestion at this point, even leaving the parade to chase down goats, if he had to.
Sif glanced at Skurge as he slipped by, her lips curved sharply into confident smirk as the enemy advanced. They would catch on eventually, but if there was any justice in the universe, she could hold them off so Skurge would tear the bloody sword from its hold. They approached, accompanied by the possessed Heimdall.
Nine versus one. She cast aside her shield and twirled her blade, calling on it to morph into a fearsome twinblade.
“Come on then,” she snarled, taking a few steps forward before she broke into a sprint. She slipped through one’s defenses and plunged her blade into its chest, causing it to disintegrate as she whipped around and cut another in half. She ducked and weaved around numerous strikes towards her, distracting the group.
She could not spare a glance to Skurge, left to hope he was having more success with the sword than she had. She struck down another who tried to skirt past her, cutting off its leg and then thrust the tip of her blade into its head.
She kicked the possessed Heimdall backwards, avoiding a direct confrontation with him as she pivoted to toss one away who was preparing to swing at Skurge.
They’d taken notice.
More and more enemies kept manifesting, Sif, Volstagg, and the few soldiers they had left were struggling to keep up. As fast as she was, Sif could not stop dozens. She managed to stop a doppleganger just as it raised its blade to cleave Skurge in two, just as he pulled the weapon free.
Horrid energy washed over the room and outwards, sweeping across the rainbow bridge. Sif and her allies ended up on their backs, winded and tired, but alive. Heimdall collapsed, and the invaders warped into the sky and vanished.
Sif coughed, rolled onto her knees before she stood. She saw Skurge laying on his back, sword still in his grasp. She approached.
“Well done,” she said, offering a hand to help him up. “Are you injured?”
It was just a damn sword stuck in a pedestal, how fucking hard could it be to get the damned thing out?! Yet, Skurge twisted and pulled and yanked with all his might.
Almost free, my ass.
Just when he was about to give up and start kicking the damned thing, it finally came free. If the sudden release of the blade didn't knock him onto his ass, the concussive blast that followed certainly did. He could feel the change of air pressure pass right through his chest. Once he hit the ground, his eyes slammed shut. He was now prone and there would be very little time to effectively defend himself from—
"Are you injured?"
A single eye snapped open and he peered up at Sif. She looked worse for wear but not dead. The dopplegangers were gone; Heimdall was unconscious.
"Nothing a good night's sleep can't handle." He looked her up and down to assess her condition. "Yourself?"
Skurge's words drew a soft laugh from her, arms tightening around him just a little before Mantis released him. The empath stepped back, blinking innocently, hands wringing in front of her body as usual.
"That is a risk I am willing to take," she declared, voice soft and somewhat playful. "I will face as many risks as I must in the name of affection." Wide eyes studied the fish with curiosity, before she picked up the sack she'd left behind Skurge. "I brought the potatoes like you asked me to!"
Skurge scratched the stubble of his chin in thought, wondering if he should delve into how far she would go if it risked him sinking a knife into her eye. An ugly thought, quickly cast away.
"Here, do you think you can do this while I look the potatoes over?" He flipped the knife over and handed it to her handle first before diving into the sack. A few of them still needed a good washing, but they were all decent and firm. A pot of salted water for a few hours would make them perfect for chips.
"Have you... scaled a fish before?" This could either be amusing or a disaster.
“What do you mean, Gladiator?” Carol asked in a hushed tone. Exactly what the hell was happening on this planet? And why the hell would she ever agree to be a fighter for someone insane enough to call themselves the Grandmaster.
The pale white and red geometric patterns on the walls bled into yellow, bright white, and blue. Door after door they passed through, with the shine of each corridor becoming more apparent. The guards wore different armour, heavier, with more flamboyant colouring. Their weapons looked to be a mix of spears and laser weaponry, while a few sported humming rifles.
Then, came the statues. Golden and shining, as if freshly polished, they were each of the same man but with different expressions. Happy, playful, pouting, thoughtful… the scent of perfume, incense, and then the sound of giggling. Faint music played, emanating from behind a large metal door.
It opened. Carol’s senses were assaulted by a tidal wave of smells – perfume and incense along with alcohol, and spicy food. The giggling was drowned by over the top laughter, and there were an assortment of people with clothing which was over the top in design and colour. Some spared the two glances as they entered, but more kept gambling, or drinking.
At the center of it all was a large, crescent moon couch with a white frame and yellow silk cushions. Beautiful women and men sat on it, lounging, drinking, and sampling fruit. Clothing appeared to be an afterthought to all of them, as instead they were covered in body paint and jewelry.
And with them was a white-haired man in gaudy robes, lips pursed in thought as his gaze flicked between three men locked into hovering chairs. He looked like the sort of person to call himself the Grandmaster. She almost didn’t notice the kree in modified accuser armour stood proudly with a long rifle.
“They’re delightful, I wish I could keep them all,” the Grandmaster clasped his hands together, “you always bring me such interesting potential. But, ah, I think I’ll take the grim looking one, on the left. And, the middle.”
The bounty hunter nodded, “and the last?”
“Hm,” the Grandmaster became thoughtful once more. Carol could hear the last captive quietly sobbing. “Topaz, what do you think?”
A stern looking woman narrowed her eyes at the last man. There was a hint of something sinister in her expressions.
“Kitchens.”
“And there you have it!” He clapped his hands, and the chairs began to move on their own accord. “Don’t worry, you’ll love the kitchen to bits!”
Carol frowned, that probably didn’t bode well. As the kree was paid, he turned and hesitated when he saw Carol. He glared, but didn’t say anything as he passed by.
“Grandmaster,” the guard bowed, “These two are from the Asgardian Transit Authority. It appears one of our citizens did not provide proper tribute to Heimdall.”
“Didn’t pay the proper tribute? I can understand the grievance,” he sounded too amused by the whole thing. “Well—"
“Asgard doesn’t have a transit authority,” Topaz stated, Carol managed to keep a straight face as her heart pounded.
“What?” Grandmaster looked at her, confused. He gestured to the two, “these two are from the… what was it? Assgard Transportation Authority?”
“Asgardian Transit Authority,” Carol corrected with a friendly smile.
“See?” Grandmaster protested to Topaz. She was still scowling.
“She’s lying.”
“Sorry,” Carol tilted her head as she met Topaz’s ruthless stare. “Have you ever been to Asgard?”
“No,” Topaz quickly replied.
“Then how would you know?” Carol followed up, she crossed her arms.
A shiver ran down his spine the closer they approached the Grandmaster. The assault of scents and sights made him wince, and it took everything he had to stifle a sneeze. The last thing he needed was to attract the mad man's attention.
Of course, that was an easy thing to do when his attention was nabbed by the lack of dress throughout the room. He managed to snap his jaw shut, but his gaze were fixed on those lounging on the crescent-shaped couch... so much so that he completely missed the conversation. Only when there was a lull and the room fell into silence did he snap out of it.
"Then how would you know?"
Oh shit. This was the part where he was supposed to help her out with their cover story, wasn't it?
"It is... a recent development, given our new... treaty with Midgard. The mortal tourists come and go. We need some way of keeping their entry in check." He swallowed hard and glanced at Carol, hoping he hadn't fucked this up even more.
"Were we required to inform you of Asgard's changes in how we run our affairs?"
Against her better judgement, the empath felt safe with Skurge. Safe enough to do this, to finally let herself catch a break and be the party girl she could never be. Mantis admired the kind of girl that was confident and fun-loving, ambitious and carefree. She wished she could be like that, unburdened by expectations. Free.
Swaying subtly, Mantis looked at the Executioner. Her eyes widened.
"So in order to meet Asgardian standards... we should set something on fire?" There was disbelief in her voice tinged with concern and a little amusement, as Mantis reached for another bottle with unsteady hands. "How— How...? How do you not kill each other with your careness... careless... carelessness. How?!"
In hindsight, it dawned on Skurge that his suggestion was probably a terrible idea. But that was him: never knowing when to shut up and making things worse than they should be. He only hoped that he wouldn't have to talk her out of it.
Ah, good, a lovely change of conversation.
"We're pretty difficult to kill. And we're not that careless. Someone is always ready to put out the fire if it gets out of hand." He planted both elbows on the bar and leaned closer, his typical grin a little more toothy than usual.
"One time... One time, Freyr got her boar to put out the fire with its piss. Needless to say, we've never used that remedy since. The smell. Whew."
((A reminder than Skurge is bicurious))
@gravityslingshot: ' Mutiny served me well. It gained me an audience! ' grandmaster
"An audience of people who'd rather string you up and gut you out... but if that's the kind of attention you like..." Skurge cocked his head to one side, the blood running down his face and into one of his eyes. He'd been disobedient by not throwing the fight like he'd been paid to, choosing to sink his axe into the face of a grubby little frog wielding a minuscule hammer in one hand and lightning in the other. That had to be some kind of joke, right?
But he was right about the mutiny. If Skurge hadn't tossed in his hat with Hela and thrown Asgard to the wolves, the Grandmaster would be without a majority of his "gladiators" he threw into that ring. All for his amusement.
"Have you had your fun or is your whip arm getting tired?"
@mantcdea: 🥁 playfully pat my muse head like a drum. from Sune because this kid's a menace
Sure, the music was cheerful enough as the parade continued throughout New Asgard. Even Skurge couldn't help tapping his toe to the beat. What he didn't expect was his head to become a percussion instrument for one such child who was brave enough to do so.
A lightning-quick fist caught him by the arm.
"Must you? There are plenty of tambourines you could beat on instead."
@mantcdea: 🫂 hug my muse
Scaling a fish with knife in hand, a sudden hug from behind was not what the Executioner had been expecting. Everything in his body tensed up, the grip on the knife tightened, until it dawned on him that nothing bad was happening.
One hand reached up and found a soft antenna above his head, telling him who it was.
"Has anyone ever told you it's a bad idea to hug and armed man?" He held the knife up for her to see, refraining from turning around.
what brand of stupid
Smart until infected with stupid
You think you're safe don't you? You are probably the responsible one in the group, perhaps even the mom friend. You are relatively smart but all it takes is one little thing to suck all your braincells out. It could be hanging around your fellow stupid friends, it could be being left alone, it could be having a bit too much fun. The stupid lives inside you and it just takes the right environment for it to show.

Would you knock up Skurge (Executioner)?
Yes ❤️
No ❌
Mantis nearly spat out her drink, blinking as though she couldn't believe her eyes. She snorted, silently wheezing as she witnessed Skurge drink from two bottles at once with practiced ease. The amused empath wondered how many times he had done this.
"You're insane," she marveled, speaking between soft giggles and small sips from her bottle. "And a bad influence on me." She downed the rest of her drink and reached for another bottle. "I like it."
She admitted it with the giddy enthusiasm of someone who had never been allowed to misbehave. Mantis felt thrilled, rebellious, alive. Perhaps she would regret it, but for now, she was having fun.
Skurge was inebriated amusement at the empath getting shitfaced. All prim and proper, now she was casting all of that to the wind to do something she'd probably had no experience with.
Which meant he was probably going to have to keep a careful eye on her.
"I wouldn't call it bad," he remarked with a huff after draining the last of the bottles. Most of it had spilled into his beard, but oh well. "Against proper manners, more like. But we Asgardians have none when it comes to celebrations. This..." He gestured to the small collection of drinks they'd already worked on. "This is nothing. Half of this place would be busted up and on fire by now."
