Hi, I absolutely love your blog!! You seem so well-read on Beatle lore, I wonder if you know anything about the rumour that Paul proposed to Cynthia after John divorced her? I've read that in a few online forums, but no sources are ever given so I'm not sure I believe it. But I thought you might know? No pressure to reply btw! Thank you and please continue the great blogging!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Unfortunately I think that story is false. I haven’t heard anything like that before, but I had a quick look around and I couldn’t find any info on it. It sounds like an exaggeration of the Hey Jude story where Paul said he was inspired to write the song (at least in part) while visiting Cynthia and Julian after John and Cynthia had just split up. Paul always has a wonderful relationship with Julian and he was feeling bad for them after John ran off with Yoko, so he thought he would go around to offer his support and friendship to them. I don’t think it went any further than friendship between Paul and Cynthia (except for in some fan fiction stories!) This happened in May 1968 and I think Paul had just recently met up with Linda Eastman (to be McCartney) in America and was sort of in between Jane and Linda, so I think it’d be unlikely that he’d propose to Cynthia. Still… you never know!
Here’s a couple of sweet Paul and Julian pics:
And a very lovely note from Paul to Julian, which Julian posted on his Facebook page in June 2013.
Thank you so much for your ‘Ask’!
@celebratorypenguin and @savageandwise have pointed out there is a passage in Cynthia’s book John where she says Paul brought her a rose and said, “we should get married” but it’s apparent he’s joking and trying to cheer her up. This is probably the source for the story the original ask-er has heard. I will look up the actual passage in the morning. Thanks, guys!
