Devon had been trough his fair chair of roommates since arriving in the city. Some were scared, some were angry, and some like him, were rebellious. Most could either take a joke, or show compassion. And then there were the ones who seemed consumed with their own emotions, to the point where they hated the whole world. Heâd been there too, especially during his first few years. But his new roomie seemed to be locked in that state twenty four seven. Which also made her look utterly exhausted when she wasnât shooting daggers at you. Then again, he knew better than to offer help. And right at this moment, he had his own wounds to tend to. Sighing a bit, he pushed himself slowly to his knees, fighting the urge to sound out the pain shooting trough his body each time he moved a muscle. Then he somehow managed to get from there and over to his cot, unable to not let out a low groan of pain as he sat down. âIts the only home any of us will ever get sulky.â he retorted, leaning his head back against the wall, trying to ignore the rest of his injuries.Â
Charlie was bristly even on her best days, and right now was certainly no exception. So much so that as the man spoke, being condescending, she outright growled at him, glaring as she moved to her own cot. Of course she got saddled with someone like this. âYeah, no shit.â it was pretty much the only home sheâd ever known since she hardly remembered life before here, given she was a child when sheâd been made a slave. Once sitting she allowed herself a moment to look to him again, noting the bruises and blood. Again, figures. âWhy donât you worry about yourself since clearly you need it.âÂ
austinxadamsâ:
Austin was genuinely interested in what she was saying. He took in every word she had to say and even though he knew the slaves here didnât have a choice, it was a bit harder to hear when it was coming from someone he was enjoying the company of. He cleared his throat a little bit and nodded. âI guess Iâm surprised we havenât run into each other before now,â he told her lightly. âBut, Iâm glad we have now,â he told her honestly.
Charlie didnât say what she was saying for sympathy or pity points. It just..was. They were literally the facts of her life. But still--the way he reacted (despite how subtle it was) was enough for her to feel almost...guilty, for telling him what he life was like. âWell Iâm not usually the nightclub type given..my occupation. And likewise, youâre not the type for said occupation.â she gave him a wry little smile as she said it, figuring heâd never set foot near the vampire club. When Austin continued speaking though her expression turned softer, more genuine, and she nodded. âI uh...I am too.â

While Charlie usually forewent most of these silly holiday activities, she actually did like the movie that was playing that afternoon in the park, and she figured at least there she was less likely to be a target than wandering around aimlessly or being a sitting duck back in her cell. She didnât have anything fancy to sit on though in the grass so she just brought the blanket from her bed, hoping it wouldnât get too dirty and when she found a spot near a tree, giving her even more privacy, she beelined for it.
She had about a solid twenty minutes of peace too--letting herself relax on the blanket, sipping at the cheap vodka sheâd poured into a water bottle before a shadow came over her and she swallowed, trying not to tense up as she didnât bother looking at who it was. âThereâs plenty of other open spaces you know...â

austinxadamsâ:
Austin tilted his head to one side, as he listened to her speak. She had an interesting way of viewing things, that was for sure. Not that he was really complaining, though. He liked to think, if he were in her position, he would feel the same. Living in fear didnât get anyone anywhere, after all. âMight as well make your opinion known, and live your life, hm?â he asked her, raising his eyebrows at her, and just smirking a bit. âI can respect that.â
âHell yes for making opinions known- especially if they tend to be right on the money. But If I was living my life, I wouldnât be here.â She quipped back, raising a brow at him. Truth was though, she didnât exactly know where sheâd even go or what sheâd do. This was all sheâd ever really known.... âGlad to see Iâve earned someoneâs respect though. Nice to see Iâve met someone with taste.â

Elaine sat emotionless as the other spewed venom back her way. Sheâd learn not to take such things personally, but it still stung a little. Perhaps it was her craving for companionship of some kindâŠAt any rate, Elaine got up without another word, tucking her blonde head under the otherâs arm and wrapping a gentle, yet firm arm around her waist. âYou could give me a break and let me help you.â Elaine teased, âSeriously though, can you make it to your cell or do you need a breather on my bed? I promise to leave you alone and you can leave whenever you want.â
âHey--â Charlie hissed, immediately moving to shove the girl away--only to sway heavily, almost falling over and she nearly growled as she had no other choice but to give in, letting the other hold her up. She hated needing help, hated seeming weak.... Charlie unconsciously leaned more of her weight onto the other girl as she let out a heavy breath though. âMy cell is at the end of the hall.â miles away right now given how her body felt. And without waiting she nudged them both into the girlâs cell again. âI just...need a minute.â
wrathleadstoruinâ:
He had done all he could to avoid that one particular guard coming back from the dining hall. Most of them didnât like him much, but this one was really fed up and seemed to truly hate him. Of course when he rounded the corner the asshole was there with a few other guards, ones Devon knew to be his friends. âThat shithead.â the guard said the moment his eyes clapped on Devon. âAnd what does that make you? A little bitch?â Dev couldnât help himself, so of course he shot back. The guard only skipped one beat before he charged at the blonde, running him right into the ground and punching him, several times. When Devon started to kick and punch back though, the guys friends came over. First they held Devon, allowing their friend to get a couple of really good punches in, leaving the human feeling dizzy and struggling to see clearly with his right eye for a bit. By the time his sight recovered just a little, he noticed he was being dragged towards his cell. âFucking morons.â He grunted, not surprised as they tossed him into the cell. Glancing over at his new roommate, Dev sent her an apologetic look, which was though quickly followed by a shit eating grin. âBringing home the crazy.â he joked to her.
@slavecharliehayesâÂ
Charlie was once again alone. Like she always ended up being. Sheâd been stupid and let herself have a moment of weakness, to let herself let her walls down long enough to get close to someone else and look--they were gone. Relocated and gone and again she was alone. And to make matters worse the guards decided she needed to get thrown into a new cell, with a whole new roommate and she hated every single second of it. So much so she was still seething an hour later, angry tears hot against her skin that roughly scrubbed away every time one dared to fall. When the door to the cell was being opened she cleared her throat and shifted on the spot, scrubbing at her face again and erasing any sign of her emotions as she got up and moved to the window. âThis isnât a home, asshole.â
dorythehumanâ:
Dory cleared her throat as she place a fist over her chest. No coughing but certainly a slight stinging sensation that then tickled up her nose. She turned away to sneeze. She listened as she shared her experience of the first time she smoked and Dory shrugged. âWell Iâve never really had an opportunity to do anything like that. Now here I am 27 smoking for the first time.â she muttered in a low voice. Continuing to listen to her, Dory had to admire her since of bravery, Dory always did after all. âCharlie, hello. Iâm Dory.â She said softly with a gentle smile.Â
Charlie watched as the girl struggled for a second, but had to admit she was impressed she didnât cough. Just the same though, the sneeze made her lips quirk up into a little smile, a but amused at the odd reaction. âThen looks like weâre at totally opposite ends of the spectrum. Too old and too young.â she mused, letting the girl having the cigarette for a moment more before she took it back. âDonât take this the wrong way, but youâre way too nice.â maybe thatâs how she survived this long. Again- opposite ends of the spectrum.
firebrandedelaineâ:
âWell, not to be a bitch, but itâs not pity. Itâs common decency, which yes, I understand is a rarity.â Elaine replied with a small, beleaguered huff. She tapped her collar as she made steady eye contact with the other. âListen, you and I are in the same boat, struggling with the same problems and the same kind of shit day in and day out. I donât see a reason to be anything but helpful to you. If you donât want it, thatâs fine. Let me at least get you to your room because you are going to pass out in the hall otherwise.â Normally, Elaine would be far gentler, far more patient, but her own exhaustion had shortened her fuse considerably. That, and she was sick of feeling so isolated down here. It was selfish, she knew, but the truth nonetheless.
.
âWell totally to be a bitch, but fuck your decency.â Charlie grumbled back, bristling at the girlâs words. She hated being treated like she was weak... âI highly doubt we have the same kind of days..â Even as she continued to glare though, the hallway spun as she took another step and she had to close her eyes for a second, swaying on the spot. âI donât have anything to give you in return.â she muttered the words almost angrily, expecting that any kindness or decency someone else wanted to bestow upon her wasnât out of actual curtesy but out of wanting something. No one was just nice for no good reason after all....not without repayment anyways..
austinxadamsâ:
There was a strange part of Austin that was feeling a bit protective over her, right now. He really wasnât too keen on the idea of her being used as a blood bag over and over again. Vampires really were disgusting. He curled his lip just a little bit. âWell, Iâll take that. Iâm glad I still rank higher than the bloodsuckers,â he smirked, glancing towards the door, before turning back to her. âHow did you end up here, anyways?â he asked.Â
âDonât get too cocky, almost anyone could rank higher than them.â A little smirk was on her lips as she said it, meeting his eyes once again. At the next question though, any hint of a smile on Charlieâs face faded away and instead she nearly scowled, her eyes again dropping down to the ground before she shrugged. âIâve been here for years. Itâs...not like it was a choice..â absently she scuffed her heel against the dirt, letting out a breath. âI started with clean up work when I was twelve. That lasted two or three years til I was relocated and I ended up here.â when she looked up again, the smile on her face was pure sarcasm. âGuess since I have nothing but my sarcasm as a skill, they figured my blood and my body would have to do.â
austinxadamsâ:
âThatâs a big part of it,â he admitted with a nod. âAnd, you donât seem afraid. You snapped right back at me with no remorse, no fear. Itâs something that I admire in another being, even if you are a slave.â He shrugged his shoulders a little bit at this, and smirked. âDonât go thinking I like you or anything, though. You just donât piss me off.â
Charlie wasnât quite expecting him to actually answer that and she looked at him in surprise for a second before schooling her expression and she shrugged. âI donât really see a point in being afraid. A superior can be having a bad day and just decide to snap my neck in the blink of an eye. With or without me being fearful of them, or pretending to be nice or...anything like that. Whether Iâm an asshole or a saint doesnât negate that fact, so...I figure if my days are always going to be up in the air anyways, I might as well not waste my time pretending.â admiration.... canât say that was something sheâd ever heard before. Yet another surprise. âI could say the same about you.â
grimreaperâ:
.
austinxadamsâ:
âWell, I donât hate you,â he laughed. âSo, thereâs that. Take that as a good impression if you want or donât, it doesnât matter to me, either way.â He smiled lightly at her. âDoes it really matter? I like to think I havenât been that bad towards you, anyways. Am I really that bad of a guy to run into? Hm?â He quipped, smirking.
Despite herself, Charlie felt the corners of her lips pulling up a bit into an almost-smile and she hummed, âIf it didnât matter you wouldnât have mentioned it.â She shot back, the little smile growing by the second. It was so easy to verbally spar with him--it was almost fun. âYou havenât. Especially since last time involved alcohol.â She mused, taking another drag of her cigarette before she hummed, glancing back at the back door to the vampire bar where she worked. She had bite marks along her neck and wrists, blood stained into her shirt from sloppy feedings. She was tired and still had hours to go on her shift as a bloodbag. âConsidering whoâs all in there waiting...nah, I guess not.â
firebrandedelaineâ:
Elaineâs entire body burned with embarrassment when her eyes caught the collar that the other pointed out, immediately abandoning her own pain to try and assist the other. âMy apologies. Itâs been a long day, though clearly not as long as yours.â Elaine noted, racking her brain trying to remember this girlâs name. Sheâd seen her in passing down here, but couldnât come up with her name for the life of her.
âWould you like to lay down while I start you a warm shower? I think Iâve still got some food stowed away if youâre hungryâŠâ Elaine offered, hoping to help this poor girl out in some way.
.
As tired and drained as she was, Charlie never did well with pity. It just sent off alarm bells in her head. People never helped others without having some sort of hidden agenda. People werenât just....good. At least not as far as sheâd experienced. Everyone always wanted something. Either that, or they were so broken already by this system that they just couldnât be trusted. Either way, when the other girl spoke she just huffed out a breath, raising her head to look up at her.
âI have a shower in my own room. And I donât need your food.....I-I donât need your pity.â
austinxadamsâ:
âMaybe so,â Austin chuckled, smiling lightly at her. He watched her curiously, allowing his eyes to roam over her slightly as he considered what she was saying. He licked his lips a little bit. âI donât know about miserable,â he said. âI find you intriguing at best, and that has to count for something, right?â he smirked.
Even as she looked away and back to her glass so she could finish off her second drink, Charlie felt his eyes on her--and she didnât quite know what to make of that. Nor did she know what to make of his response to her either. âIntriguing.â She echoed, nudging her empty glass away and turning back to him to give him her full attention. âAnd whyâs that? Because I donât just roll over like everyone expects a slave to?â
