PSA FOR ALL RAVEN CYCLE ENJOYERS
from your local welsh history enthusiast:)
the raven cycle is a very popular piece of media, the book series taking off extremely well in America in the mid 2010s till up until now. people cant get enough it and rightfully so with a compelling plot, lovable and relatable characters, and a deep dive into both history and the unknown. however there are some things that need discussing.
the raven cycle is heavily embedded in welsh culture and folklore as many of you already know. it explores ancient magic (heavily linked to some historic Celtic practices and belief systems) and looks into the mysteriousĀ ādeathā of the last native prince of Wales (Cymru). and its a good book, though its historical accuracy is almost not there at all. but thatās the fun of a book right?Ā
well, it depends.
for many fans of this book, you may know nothing about welsh history or the context behind it. I can bet many of you didnt even know Wales (Cymru) was a country before reading it, and I cant blame you thereās no reason you should have. but Maggie Stiefvater is an author who WROTE this series, so she should have done the research, not a random account on the internet telling you whatās up.
what am I talking about in particular you may ask?
I am talking about the name Maggie gave to the dead princeĀ āOwen Glendowerā
for those who do not know welsh history, he was based off a very real princeĀ āOwain Glyndŵrā
soĀ whatās the significance of this name change? when I first read the books (I swear it was a fever dream), I didnt even realise that Glendower was supposed to be the very important figure in welsh history.
she changed his name from Glyndŵr -> Glendower
reason why this is a problem you may ask? Maggie has used the anglicised, English version of his name. and why is this fucked up you may ask? because it was the English who murdered him. not only that but using his, and other traditional names inappropriately and inconsiderately too. welsh (Cymraeg), the language, was banned (Welsh Not), shamed and scorned, seen as the inferior language to English, quoting thatĀ āThe native gibberish is usually prattled throughout the whole of Taphydomā¦. so that (if the stars prove lucky) there may be some glimmering hopes that the British language may be quite extinct and may be Englished out of Wales.ā this is common rhetoric in many English attitudes towards welsh people and the language as a whole.
here are some exerts of anti welsh propaganda and dictations that still exist today against Cymru and Cymraeg as a language.
āNowhere was the spirit of conquest and of racial superiority so vigorously and selfishly kept alive as in the English boroughs.ā (referring to welsh racial inferiority)
"the worst and most formidable district in the kingdom.ā (revering to South Wales)
āI would sooner go to hell than to Wales.ā
āFrom the earliest times the Welsh have been looked upon as an unclean people. It is thus that they have preserved their racial integrity. Their sons and daughters rarely mate with human-kind except their own blood relationsā¦.. I often think that we can trace almost all the disasters of English history to the influence of Wales.ā
keeping the traditional namesakes alive is very important to welsh culture and heritage but Anglicisation of the name for the sake of making itĀ āeasierā for a predominately American audience does not sit right with me. so much culture has been taken away already and it is a thing of much pride in the communities. it may not seem like a big deal but trust me on this.
Glyndŵr means valley of water.
but I dont know what the fuckĀ āglendowerā means.
changing anyones name to make itĀ āeasierā for someone else is fucked up. anyone can pronounceĀ Glyndŵr and if you cant, look it up.Ā
Owain is not Owen. Glyndŵr is not Glendower.
most people probablyĀ wonāt be aware of this or theĀ reasons why altering traditional namesĀ shouldnāt have happened and that is fine, it is Maggies fault forĀ constantly maintaining the usage of the westernised version of it. but please for gods sake know that changing names to suit an anglicised,Ā WesternĀ AmericanĀ narrativeĀ only ever does harm.
going forward, try using his actual name to honour not just the fictional character that you have grown used to but as the prince that Maggie has taken her story from and ran with it.Ā
for referenceĀ āOwainĀ Glyndŵrā is pronounced owā¢ineĀ glinā¢duor
thankĀ you for taking the time to read this andĀ I hope you have learned something:)
the welsh roll over in their graves every time another ignorant teenager mispronounces their beautiful language
well, this fic isnāt going to write itself, but iām going to wait a bit longer to make sure.Ā
Just recalled all the fics I promised to write last year. Not a single one happened but maybe itāll write itself this year :)
A baby Andrew and Betsy āBeeā Dobson. Like what if instead of Cass Bee had adopted Andrewā¦sob
Yes this is all very emotional and im sobbing while typing but THE CROCS. THE. CROCS.
AFTG Headcanon
Andrew benches a LOT. This is canon. He loves lifting and his arms, chest, and shoulders are JACKED. However, he HATES abs. He has upper abs as a result of benching, but he will never be caught dead doing crunches (they are even borderline triggering).
So I present to you: jacked upper body Andrew with soft tummy <3
Had a dream last night that I was playing soccer with Neil Josten and Kevin Day was sitting to the side criticizing our technique. It was great
the feminine urge to angstily smoke out the window like Andrew Minyard except my dorm windows donāt open. and smoking is prohibited. and any kind of fire starter isnāt allowed in the dorm. fuck
Headcanon: Andrew shops in the kids section because⦠well you know why
This could go one of two ways
Andrew shopping in the Target kids section and scarring some little child that dared to make eye contact with him.
Andrew hyping up some little boy whoās mother yelled at him for wanting a pink sparkle shirt.
āYou don't think he's crazy now?"
"Crazy, nah," Nicky said. "Soulless, perhaps.ā
Okay can we talk about how important this is? Everyone thought Andrew was insane on AND off his meds, but Nicky knew he wasnāt. He didnāt understand everything that drove Andrewās decisions, but he knew that when he wasnāt drugged to the gills, he knew exactly what he was doing and his brain was sharper than ever.
No thoughts, just Neilās orange bandana
does anyone else just really not vibe with the 5 +1 fic format? no hate if thatās your thing, I think my brain just goes āmath? in this economy?ā and gives up before I can ever start reading
