Chapter 1: Who we are. Okay, so, here's the deal. My name's Furis. I know it's a really stupid, weird name, but mostly everyone just calls me the Devil's Daughter. I have dark brown, sun streaked hair and I brown eyes. I'm 5'9", pale, and really skinny. I'm fourteen, roughly, and weigh probably a hundred pounds. And that's stretching it. Just a warning: I have a gift of getting under people's skins. I'm fast on my feet and I know how to survive on my own. Now. You're probably wondering "Why would she need to? Doesn't she have parents?" Well, sadly enough, no I do not. I mean, they're probably out there somewhere, but I don't know where. Don't even know who they are. I live, well, not on my own, but I'm in charge. My "family" and I live out in a deserted house in the middle of no where. For the moment. We're constantly moving though, constantly on the run. The quotation marks around the word, "family" are because Maya and Maia are the only people in it related by blood. It consists of six kids and we all grew up together, all protected one another. So, we may not all be related by blood, but we're still completely and totally a family. In my book, at least. Now, if you're wondering why exactly six kids are parentless, constantly on the run, and why the one in charge is a fourteen year old girl, I'll tell you. We're on the run because a few years ago, we all escaped from this lab we call the Prison. I'm in charge because A.) I'm the oldest. B.) I'm the most ruthless. C.) I've got the most drive to get what needs to be done done. And as for the parentless part, we're parentless because when we were born, these evil, sadistic scientists that work at the Prison decided to kidnap us, graft avian (bird) DNA into us, and experiment on us to see if we could live through this supposedly imposing apocalypse that they're causing. So. Are you interested yet? Thought so. Anyway, when they grafted that DNA into us, it made us come out only 98% human. That other 2 percent makes a big difference, trust me. So, you have two options. 1- keep reading or 2, close this book right now. If you're reading this right now, it means that you're hanging on for the ride. Nice choice. So, if you don't mind, I'm going to explain who we are just a little further. The six of us (Me-Max-, Eli, Nick, Aerik, Maya, and Maia) are pretty good at survival. I mean, we could literally out do the Military. And the Navi. But, to be fair, we were kinda built to, so... Okay, so, here's the run down. As you know, my name's Max. I have brown, sun streaked hair, brown eyes, am really pale, and am 5'9". As I said, we have wings. Mine are kind of like a hawks. But much, much bigger. They're about 13 feet across, because they have to be proportional in size to our bodies. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to fly. Eli, who happens to be my right hand (or in this case, right wing) man, is pretty quiet. His hair (and wings) are such a deep black that they look dark purple in the sunlight. His eyes are so dark that you can't see his pupils, yet they have these weird glints of gold in them. So, basically, everything about him is dark except his skin. This kid is like vampire pale. It's creepy. He's about four inches taller then me, so, roughly 6'1", and he loves messing with me about it. He's fourteen too. Then, there's Nick. He's roughly 6 foot, has colorless blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair, and is blind. His hearing is far beyond anything imaginable. A cockroach couldn't come a mile away from him without him knowing. He wasn't born blind, though. A few years back, when we were still in the Prison, they tried to "enhance" his night vision. Now he's blind. That shows you just how idiotic those labcoats are. Aerik, Nick's partner in crime, is roughly eight. Possibly seven. He's around the 5'4" range and has bleach blonde hair. His eyes are a lighter brown then mine and his personality is basically what you'd expect from a eight year old boy. But he knows how to act when stuff's serious. He and Nick are best friends and, sadly enough, they love to explode things. They are bomb extrodinares. You could lock these two up in a padded cell with nothing but a bowl of jello and a plastic spoon and they'd still find a way to make something explode. And, finally, the twins, Maya and Maia. Maya is pretty much like a younger, girlier, more depressing version of Eli. The only reason she's more depressing is because when Eli's quiet, he's thinking. When she's quiet, she's using her very....unique talent. We all have certain powers that were programmed into us, along with the wings and everything else. I can read people's minds (literally), and I can create, destroy, and control fire. Eli can do that with electricity. Hence the gold specks in his eyes. Nick is our best fighter, with me and Eli right behind him. He can also feel colors and identify you by the feel of your finger prints. Aerik can mimic any voice or sound known. However, the twins got the weirdest, creepiest powers. Maya controls, simply put, death. Subconsciously, she decides who dies in the world. Though, she can do it consciously if she has to. Her sister is her opposite. She can do the same thing with life. Together, they're like yin and yang. 'Cause, yah know. Five, possibly six, year olds are sooo notoriously known for making good decisions when it comes to that stuff! They have to work together, though. Because, if Maya wants someone to...pass through the afterlife, but Maia doesn't want them to die, then Maya can't let them die. But if Maia doesn't want them to live, and Maya doesn't want them to die, they stay living, because they haven't decided what to do yet. It just depends on the circumstances. Anyway, Maya and Maia are, simply put, gingers. They have the complete ginger-look. They have the fire red hair, the ocean blue eyes, the freckles all over their faces, everything. They're 4'6". Chapter 2: Reality or Dream? I was running. Trying to get away from the labcoats chasing me. These guys are really persistent..! I'd never been this far away from the Prison before. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew I had to get out of there. No matter what. Suddenly, I heard the unearthly baying sounds of dogs on the hunt. Oh no... Dogs, dogs go away, let me live another day.... All of us could out run full grown humans, even Maya and Maia, and they're six. Or so. But none if us could out run a big dog. I saw light filtering in through the patchy bushes and undergrowth. Please, let it be a clearing, let it be a clearing... Yes! No, oh no! I stopped running just in time to keep from dropping of the edge of a cliff. The baying got closer and louder as the dogs got nearer and nearer to their prey: me. Oh, God, please, just let me live. I don't care how, just let me live..! Then the dogs had come out from under the bushes, ready to year apart their prey. The labcoats were holding various weapons, knives, guns, ect., everything needed to kill a mutant bird-kid on the run. Then, I made one of my famous snap-decisions and jumped right off the edge of the cliff. Trust me, if you were me, you would've done the same thing. Next thing I knew, all I could hear was the deafening wind in my ears. It was so dang peaceful, I almost smiled. Then I remembered why I was racing towards the earth and it kinda lost its peaceful-ness... Seconds before I hit the ground, I pulled up all my strength and quickly unfurled my wings. Yow! Note to self: no sudden unfurling... Yeah, wings. Thirteen feet across, light brownish with white and black streaks here and there. Its where the "mutant bird-kid" part comes in.. I raced upward, towards the sky. One of the labcoats lifted his gun and a small red dot appeared on my nightgown. Not today, you jerk, I thought and then swerved into the sun so it would be in his eyes.... ****** I woke up, heart pounding, blood racing, ice-cold adrenaline coursing through my veins. I say up and frantically checked to look for any bullet holes, but there was nothing. God, I hated that dream. It was always the same. Me running from the Prison, me almost getting killed, and then me escaping. It was kind of repetitive. I quickly got out of bed and went to my dresser, trying to shake off the dream. Amazingly, Maia had put the clothes away. I pulled on some clean sweats and walked out of my bed room door. I walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge, hoping the good fairies had come or something. Nope, nothing. Crap. Just then, I heard Nick, tall and white as can be, jump sleepily onto the couch. I don't know how, but he never misses. Unless one of us moved the furniture or something, he never has any problem with being blind... Or at least, you can't see that he has a problem with it... "Rise and shine, Nick. C'mon. Up and at 'em." "Bite me," he growled, and slumped into a partially up-right position. I shrugged, then looked back into the fridge, trying to scrounge up something for breakfast. Suddenly, the hair on the back of my neck stood on end, and I whirled around real fast, standing straight. Eli was standing not two inches from me, silent as always. "Would you quit that?!" "Quit what?" "You know what," I grumbled and he smirked. I rolled my eyes and moved on to the pantry. Nothing. Ugh. And we didn't have any money. Crap.
