i love knowing exactly enough graph theory to be able to tell if a stupid "go through every door once" puzzle is impossible
it's actually extremely easy to prove just at a glance. a selection of rooms and doors or islands and bridges is analogous to a bunch of nodes with lines connecting them.
basically, all you need to check is the number of nodes with odd numbers of lines emanating from them. if you task yourself with travelling every path exactly once, only even nodes leave you on the same "side" you started on. it follows that if there are no odd nodes, the graph is draw-able starting at any point. if there are two odd nodes, you have to start at one of them and end at the other. if there are more than two, the graph is impossible to draw contiguously.
also works on "draw this shape without lifting your pencil or doubling over any lines" puzzles, its all graphs

Something which I've seen as a trend with pro Palestine activism, is things which are not Palestine specific are being treated as if they are.
For example, this Instagram post below was made
The thing is, the Palestinian flag specifically is not banned. The rule in its entirety is that non participating countries cannot have their flag present at the event. The rule is also an old rule which still is in place.
Yes, the Palestinian flag cannot be present, but also the Aotearoa/New Zealand flags, the US flag, Tunisia flag, etc, can also not be present.
This is not a rule which is specifically in place for Palestine.
And it's all part of a wider trend of rules/things which apply to multiple countries are being seen as targeting Palestine specifically.
It is also disinformation, fear mongering and even at times antisemitism when people act like (((zionists))) are controlling the world.
This is why it's important, as with anything you see on social media, to do your own research. Find the facts and ignore things which are intentionally maliciously misworded.
Another little sketchbook piece, experimenting with low light and a glow effect. Been loving these light-focussed works lately!

I'm in need of advice and I'm desperate so I've come to you Tumblr please help me
I'm currently a data scientist for a very small start up company, but I have my background in political science and so I'm concerned that I might be dead in the water if/when the company goes under and I need to find another job. I've consulted with some recruiters and they agree that if I want to go into data science I should get my master's. I think because of my personality, data science is a really good job for me, so I'm planning on going for it.
Here's the issue: I don't want to go to school and end up learning exclusively theory. I've been teaching myself a ton by reading textbooks and I've noticed that while there's a lot of depth in the math/calculus/linear algebra behind how the functions work and what the parameters are, there seems to be very little information on how to actually apply that information in the real world. Obviously the math is important and very exciting :D but if all I do is learn the math and I don't learn how to apply the knowledge I have to non-ideal data sets and situations then I'm not really learning the information I need to know.
Are there any graduate programs that are well known for really preparing people for data science roles in the workforce instead of just focusing on the academic side of statistics?
I have to have like 10 karma on the data science subreddit to post and the other subs I asked didn't have any answers;-;
There definitely exist grad programs which are explicitly in applied math, or have an applied math concentration. Many students in my grad school (University of Minnesota) are on the applied track and many of them go into industry jobs. I think the grad program at Clemson is more applied than pure with lots of people going into industry. These are the two I know more about off the top of my head because they are the schools I had to choose between when I picked a school, but there are many other programs that are explicitly applied.
You'll also find "data science boot camp" type programs, I know some people who've done them and benefited from them but I don't know a ton about them.
Given your background in polisci you might reach out to the Institute for Math and Democracy, and/or Chad Topaz at QSIDE- these institutions I believe basically have ongoing collaborative research projects using data science applied to polisci/similar so you might learn from getting involved in their projects and/or they may be able to give you advice. I know people at both of those places if you want help reaching out.
I'm gonna tag people who might know more than me. (Probably will know more than me. I'm in rather pure math.) Also maybe my followers will have ideas.

Wish I could tag the-real-numbers but he deactivated but I'll text him and see if he has ideas and I'll report back
Absolutely!
Back in 2022 the EBU was originally gonna allow Russia to participate on the basis that the Eurovision "Is not a political contest" even though it very much is.
Ukraine initially protested this but they, still, didn't budge.
Only after Finland, Estonia and Iceland threatened to withdraw (I think it was these three) and only then did the EBU decide to suspend Russia on the basis that their broadcaster was spreading misinformation and propaganda regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The official statement given was not that they had an issue with one of the contestants actively invading another, rather that they weren't being honest about it.
It's worth noting that each country has to pay a participation fee based on their population. In other words, a country like Poland is not paying the same amount of money as a country like San Marino. You can therefore see why the EBU did not want to lose Russia. If one country with large population leaves that means the participation cost for the remaining ones will rise. In fact, Russia's expulsion has inadvertently caused Bulgaria's, North Macedonia's and Montenegro's withdrawal as they could no longer afford the participation fee. This year, Romania, a country with a large population but facing financial difficulties is possibly also withdrawing. Their participation is still up in the air, well after the period to announce their participation has ended, and Australia also took quite a well to finalize negotiations for their participation.
Just like they did with Russia, the EBU has already announced that they do not intend to ban Israel and unless no other countries complain about it and threaten to withdraw, like Estonia, Finland and Iceland did before for Russia, they're gonna keep Israel around.
I'm not here to discuss who should be allowed in and who not, because if we start with Israel then we should also take Azerbaijan, Serbia and every single northwestern European country that retains colonies around the world out too, but my point is, if the EBU's official reasoning for expelling Belarus was that they were trying to send a propaganda song and for Russia was that their broadcaster was spreading propaganda, I don't see how Israel's broadcaster isn't doing the exact same thing about the ongoing situation in Palestine.
