Imagining. . .

Calming my fussy baby down after a bad dream. Petting hair away from teary cheeks and hushing softly, even as their balled hands try to knock memories out of their head. Holding their head, so their little hits don’t make impact with them, just me.

“It’s okay,” I can tell them quietly, as they are so small, scared and overwhelmed. “Hush, it’s okay, baby. No bad dreams. I’m here.”

Holding them close and letting my tiny thing weep until it feels better, swaddled with me. Rubbing baby’s back gently, humming comfort into their hair. “That’s it, good job. Breathe, tiny. It’s okay, tiny,” I remind.

I don’t rest until my baby has, first. Until their breathing steadies, until the paci I gave them falls because they are asleep. I keep my baby in my arms, as I lie down, petting their head, like I can paint over bad memories with good ones. Regardless, I’m there, always, for my little one.

Imagining. . .

Tiny is so, so sleepy. But they want to be like Papa, staying up later. Mumbled words so soft and unintelligible, holding onto my shirt while I lie them down for bed.

I tell them, “It’s okay, baby. You’re just little, you need some sleep.” And of course that I would be right here. My tiny is still saying, I want to be awake! Wants to be with me, will just take a short nap and wake right back up.

Oh, my. It makes me smile. I kiss their head and say, “okay, tot. Just a short nap, okay? I’ll be right here, it’s okay. Night night.”

I know my baby is going right to sleep all night long. I don’t mind, though; I get to be right there, next to my darling.

- Fix little parts of their clothes, and tie their laces.

- Use their favorite petnames when greeting.

- Spoonfeed them, and bonus, say “aaaah” while you do.

- “Good job, baby!” for praise, plus a sticker for rewards.

- “Let me help; you’re a bit too little for that, aren’t you?”

Little ones hate these tricks!!!
