once again for my ao3
Also for my author's notes
So... about that afterlife meeting...
Just posting these here so I can include them in my writing notes on ao3
Thots on kokushibo??? Interesting? Boring? Cool lookin? Too many gd eyes?
I find him delightfully complicated. Ok, maybe not delightful, kind of disturbingly real in his complicated feelings toward Yoriichi.
As a demon, Kokushibo seems pretty straightforward (all his eyes face one direction after all, hahaha). He is the demon who does everything by Muzan's book, doesn't take unnecessary action, is analytical and calculated in doing whatever makes sense in Muzan's service. Despite his slow manner of speaking, he makes quick, authoritative assessments. He's got the ideal stoicism of a samurai, an ideal he's chased since early childhood.
That's why his human faults always made him so disgusted with himself.
As a boy, he was highly perceptive. He really was just trying to make everyone happy--make his father proud, while also having sympathy for his deaf and neglected little brother. As much as he wanted to care for that little brother and protect him, he likewise knew he needed to prioritize his future as the Tsugikuni heir, and he may had looked down a bit on that pitiful boy clinging to their mother's side. It wasn't for judging him, just a recognition of the gulf between them. Michikatsu was very mature from a young age, and always the more worldwise of the two twins even into adulthood. He sees his situations clearly, both in terms of understanding and in the supernatural methods attained through practicing Breath. He doesn't give in to fanciful ways of interpreting the world.
He had one very, very big misconception, though. When he finds he's misjudged Yoriichi, he has a very clear understanding of just how much it threatens his whole worldview, and even as a child he starts to recognize that he's disturbed by and jealous of and completely unable to compare to his genius of a brother, and this turns Michikatsu's world upside down even before their father starts switches their places. Even so, he can't quite hate Yoriichi, and he still tries to keep a relationship when they reunite as adults, even as Michikatsu is stressed more and more by those growing ugly feelings he's always tried to suppress.
And then when Muzan offers him the chance to throw away all the efforts to be a good human and focus only on attainly his ideal as a powerful warrior, he's relieved. He doesn't need to hide his ugliness anymore. The fact that he was always a little scared of himself really drives home the shock he feels when he recognizes what a monster he's become, uglier than he ever thought.
Why so many eyes, then? Only a guess, but all the better to see you with, my dear. And horrifically, all the better to see himself.
Currently making an analysis of Kokushibo (in part for my fic Skin-Shallow, Soul-Deep), and there’s this one specific thing that throws me for a loop. I don’t know what it is, but I feel like there’s some meaning behind the line ‘It was disturbing.’
That exact line appears in the narration twice, both in situations where ‘disturbed’ is a pretty weird reaction to have.
I think it might be what he says when he feels conflicted or confused, but I’m not sure.
I love Kokushibo so much.
There's so many ways to interpret him, because he looks like a massive dickhead from his own perspective, and we see just enough of him from Yoriichi’s pov to realize he's an unreliable narrator who understates the hell out of his own love and care for his brother, but not enough to get a solid idea of what he's actually like.
Which is why he can be interpreted in so many different ways. And I love that, but it also drives me fucking crazy.
Kimetsu no Yaiba References
A collection of basic references, with links to more in-depth explanations and analysis. As much as possible details are taken from canon sources, but for what isn’t expressly stated, sleuthing was required and therefore has a margin of error. Some sections are also outside-research based for what is hopefully handy meta, especially for fanfic writers. Note: This post is likely to be edited with future additions.
Please see below the cut for the following topics:

"Shinobu died for Kanae but couldn't live for Kanao."
Kanae never wanted her to die.
Shinobu couldn't live for anyone. Not in a world where Douma still lived.
