- The House

Mable and her family live a peaceful and comfortable life, until Raymond, Mable father, is reminded by his family of his deepesr insecurity. While out at night processing the cruel words their family left him behind, he makes an agreement with a mysterious man. His family is to move into a big and beautiful new house! For free. At least that's what the agreement says.

It unveils the fanatasy that many in our society seem to, perhaps even subvonciously, falsy strive for. We think we always need something better, bigger, something new. Because we think that is what we should like, sometimes it is what other people expect of us. We only want to fit in and be liked, but is it really worth it?

A mysterious, eery and unsettling short film reflecting on being true to one self, expectations, greed and home.

A real estate agent on the brink of finalizing his biggest and most expensive property yet. Sleepless night, and tiresome work until it finally is done. A problem here, a bug infestation there - not a problem for the best real estate agent in the world. The big day comes, and the viewing starts - two guests seem to be extreamly interested in the house but no happy end awaits, the sane or not so sane real estate agent in this case.

The humanification of this animal character is very well done, we get to see all the actions so normalized by us, from a totally differenr perspective. The viewer is almost forced to wonder about the importance of this house viewing, especially when the story progresses and ambigorous truths come to light.

While entailing even a whimsical music break, this short movie is certainly intruiging to watch, slightly digusting and uncomfrotable in a way that a movie which challenges you to either face something that is true but you don't want to see.

Rosa is done with all her tenants not paying rent! How is she supposed to do the necessary adjustments and renovations on the house, if she has no money for it?! Rosa is shocked when Elias, one of her two only tenants leaves with a boat that he build off of her floor boats. And how could this mysterious 'soul partner' or whatever of her other tenant help him!? Rosa can't understand why everyone leaves and she never liked to talk about the flood.

The relationships between the characters are very important in this short film and they are so intricately made! The personalities if each character is so specific and dogmatic, watchinf them clash yet coexist makes it fun to watch. Also theorizing about unspoken ways these characters might be connected ti one another is very interesting.

A wonderful short film possibly about letting go, moving on, trust and, home.

It is such a blast to watch these three short stories and think of possible connection between them, to think about houses, and cities, families and home. What is a home? What makes a home? Does a house make a home? So interesting to think about and what a lovely time it is, to try and figure out how these stories relate to each other!

I can only recommend it, also to watch it multible times for everything that might stay hidden the first time.

Ok not to be aroace on main but that's exactly what I am and I'm so sick of the voice inside my head wondering what the hell is wrong with me when it should be wondering what the hell is wrong with this world.

Being aroace is BEAUTIFUL. It's SO COOL. It takes you by the hand and shows you all the bullshit society pushes on people, it's natural for us to question the status quo and it is so beautiful to defy a system that has explotation as a goal. It is so FIERCE and so, let me emphasize, enherently QUEER, to be aromantic and/or asexual.

Autumn Movie Reviews - Coraline ★★★★★

I think we all know the feeling of grass being greener on the other side, but what if the grass on the other side wants to manipulate, kidnap and turn you into a puppet?

Coraline and her parents just moved into a new house in a new town. Far from her friends and her parents being busy with their work, Coraline finds herself bored and feeling neglected. With the lack of things to do, she sets her mind to discovering their new home and like as though the house was listening to her, one night she finds a small door leading her into a house just like hers but brighter, warmer, with her same set of parents but with... buttons for eyes. Instead of being busy, they shower Coraline with affection and attention, it's like a dream come true! Little does Coraline know that this dream wants her to keep dreaming on forever.

Filled with atmospheric music, stunning visuals and quite the complex story Coraline draws one into the dilemma of a child looking for love and being hunted by a dangerous force instead. In contract to the boring and normal world, the other world is vibrant and loving and thus crossing the boundary of a safe enviorment. It reminds the viewer of the imperfections that life has and that they make us and our lives human. Nothing should be meant to be perfect, and while children must not be neglected! It does good to remember that life cannot always be happy and enjoyable in the moment - but still be a life worth living.

Watching this movie makes you tap into the memory of wanting something and upon getting it realizing, how good what you had was. It's like waking up from a nightmare when you were a child. Coraline is a thrilling, whimsical stop-motion film that follows Coralines dangerous and scary adventure through a world made to manipulate her into loving it. This world is filled with phantasical figures and riddles, as well as a black cat that turns out to be of quite a lot of help to Coraline.

This beautiful movie is a beautiful choice for a rainy afternoon watch. If you are interested in a nostalgic, whimsical and slightly scary film, Coraline will be perfect for you!

- Corpse Bride

Surely, the living can't marry the dead, can they?

Solely in order for both families to secure their financial situation, a marriage is arranged between their children. Victor is not displeased but not thrilled that he is going to be married. Only when he meets Victoria and they exchange their mutual worry of not meeting the others expectation, does he come to the revelation that this might not be terrible after all. But at their wedding rehearsal, when all eyes are on him, Victor just cannot correctly say the wedding vows. Afterwards, full of frustration and disappointment in himself, he practices the wedding vows and he succeeds. Much to his surprise underneath the barren tree that he practiced putting on the ring on his soon-to-be-wife's finger, someone had been waiting for her soon-to-be-husband to do that very thing. The ring on her finger, the wedding vows to perfectly performed, Victor finds himself in the world of the dead, married to a dead woman. Victor is trying his best to find his way back to the land of the living to fulfill his parents expectations and marry Victoria without hurting his current wife's feelings.

In Corpse Bride the world of the living is bland and gray, the world of the dead is, in contrast, a vibrant one with music and whimsical, individual creatures. While the living are trying their utmost for every person of the community to fit into the boxes the society proposes, the dead have long accepted their differences. It makes one wonder who really is dead and who alive.

Furthermore, between the lines of life and death one could argue that a tragic love story is displayed. If it is betrayal, wanting to be loved and murder, this movie has it all and is accompanied by piano pieces and sad, as well as whimsical singing performances. Not to mention the animation is simply delightful to follow along.

I can only recommend this classic as a wonderful autumn watch.

Here he is, the guy that I base my whole wardrobe on. If you can find someone else that's killing a black and white striped suit, please, contact me immediately.

Barbara and Adam live a happy life in their beautiful house, that is until they die. All that awaits them at home after their terrible accident is a strange book "The Manual for the Recently Deceaced". To the couples further misery, peace doesn't await them on the other side, quite the opposite. Next to all the buerocracy that comes with being dead, a new family moves in the house they are still living in - well, more or less - and among them is an eccentric artist eager to change the interior as well as exterior design of the whole house. As they try to scare the family away, they meet Lydia, the dauther of the father that bought the house. Other than him or his new wife, Lydia can see the ghost couple. They keep failing again and again, if only there was someone that could scare the family away for good... That's where Beetlejuice tries to squeeze in. But Barbara and Adam know he is unpredictable and that he comes at a price, but what if someone else is willing to release him in a time of need...?

This movie has incredible visuals. Call it whimsical, bizarr, dark - it all does well. The eccentric artist Delia Deetz brings one right into the mids of modern, expressionist and abstract sculptures full of rectangles, dull and dim colors. The world of the death with weirdly angled hallways, over crowded waiting rooms of newly deceased and hard to understand but important and mandatory appointments keeps the nightmare going.

But not only the visuals are strange and unique but it is undermined by the characters themselves, the best example being Beetlejuice himself. Not only does he speak three words when one should speak only one but he also is absolutely disgusting. Crossing boundaries whenever the chance presents itself, Beetlejuice sucks. His sexist nature can hardly be blamed on the time this movie was created , he is supposed to be the horrible being that he is. And even though it must be hard, only living in the miniature sculpture of the town Barbara and Adam lived in, he is optimistic and an entertainer at heart.

Beetlejuice is a vastly unique experience of a movie, covering topics such as life, death and family with the bizarr atmosphere and comedic writing. It's a classic and worth the watch.

- Hocus Pocus

It's all just hocus pocus, or is it?

Max Dennison is the last person to believe in all of that made up nonsense that the people in the town to which his family just moved to seem to believe in. When on Halloween, him, his little sister and his school crush end up in the closed museum that is the old house of three long gone sisters who were witches, if one believes in towns talk that is, Max lights a candle that fullfils an ancient curse. The three sisters are brought back to life for the night and reasume what they failed at 300 years ago when they were burned at the stakes - eat the souls of enough children to stay young forever. Max, Dani and Allison can't let that happen and with the help of a talking black cat that has its very own history with the evil witches, they try to keep the sisters from finishing their potion to immortality.

This spooky classic carrys an ever present element of comedy with it as it depicts the three witches in the modern world. If mistaking a halloween costume for the devil, riding a vacuum cleaner due to the lack of brooms, learning about buses, the witches are met with mysteries left and right. But their goal is clear and their ability, ranging from good smell, good looks and good mind in addition to magic make them powerful in their pursuit.

Apart from the spooky visuals, the spotlight falls in the siblings Max and Dani highlighting their bond and the importance of siblings, family and appreciating, loving and protecting one another.

A let down for me personally was the sexism knotted throughout the whole of the movie, it being found not only in the design of the characters and their motivations but in the actions carrying the plot and finally shaping the story to what it is after the credits. It might have to do with the time this movie was made but the shallowness of the female characters does scream you in the face even if you don't look for it.

The movie may start slow paced but it picks up towards the end. There is an undying halloween spirit accomoanying this movie, making the atmosphere is ever so spooky and whimsical.

Most of the school work that adolescents do is simply a waste of time, of energy, of patience. It robs youth of its right to play and play and play; it puts old heads on young shoulders. 'Education' does not consider the motives of children, their desire to play, their longing to be free, to escape moulding by adults who do not know how to live themselves.

- Edward Scissorhands

To be a complete person unfinished, to inflict pain upon intending to care, to be adored for ones uniqueness until it is too different.

Once upon a time lived an exeptionally intelligent inventor. Unfortunately, he died before he could finish his biggest invention yet - Edward. Left with scissors for hands, Edward lived alone in the old mansion up on the hill even after his creators passing. Until one day, a sales woman for cosmetics knocks on the door. Finding his face covered in scars and the absence of anybody else in the old and run-down mansion, she takes him with her. We see Edward being accepted by the towns people - No, not only accepted but celebrated. And we see the celebration shift to mistrust and fear once Edward cannot comply to the rules of society, ending in disaster.

Due to the immense seclusion and lack of social contact that Edward has grown up with, he enters the world of the towns people; the normal world, with naivity making him seem innocent, young and somewhat pure. His deepest desire seems to be to love and be loved, making him naturally very generous and kind but also gullible. Yet often times, when he tries to do good or tries to mimic the way in which the towns people show care and support, Edward instead causes destruction. It is a part of him that differenciates him from everybody else in even the most mundane activities such as putting on clothes or eating.

But instead of being othered for those differences, the people adore Edward for the useful and beautiful things he can do and create with scissors for hands. It is not only his physical disability but also his vivid imagination which makes him very apt at creating garden sculptures, cutting hair or lettuce. These talents are much appreciated by the towns people and make him find his place in this community of people.

It is highlighting the importance of hands. It reads so banal but it is something I have never before thought about. How important touch is, not only in daily life but for the relation to ones own self and others.

Furthermore, it puts forth the ableist reality of capitalism. Edward found a hold in the towns community due to what he could provide for the community in monetary value. His statues, his hair cuts, he even went on local television for his creative genius. What would become of his status in the community if he had regular hands? Were the towns people, the people that took him in, actually interested in Edward himself or in what he could do and what they could gain both individually and collectively from him?

Edward Scissorhands is a, while grotesque, wholesome, philosophical and melancholic movie through and through, while not leaving behind the occasional comedy! The story is so tactfully developed and marvelously acted out. I can absolutely recommend this movie.

the other day I was mopping the floors at work and thought about how weird it felt for others to be thinking I had a period because it somehow doesn't make sense seeing me as a woman because I'm such a bad woman.

And then I thought about what makes me think that - I really don't like being sexual with another person. It makes me feel like I fail as a woman because for some reason my mind associates being the object of desire to being a woman! Isn't that crazy??

but, I really love being a woman and I really love my asexuality for showing me weird beliefs of mine
