some day I'll be able to draw something else than static self-portraits showing off my clothes but until then, here we are

✨🦋Canticles for Cyborgs🦋✨ is a mix built around a special kind of vocal. it's about how we have been singing for thousands of years and will continue to sing whatever strange future may await us.
I usually start these mixes based on a very specific musical or aesthetic idea I notice and then start collecting songs with the same vibe. so it sometimes takes months or years until they start coming together for me, but the patience it requires is also rewarding. I love working on things over long spans of time and finding links and familiarities where I wouldn't have suspected them at first. It's my little way of making sense of the world 🕯

tried out some new pencils and they blend so nicely!
dusted off the watercolors bcause I had to show you this very gay outfit I wore the other day
I haven’t seen anyone outside the oldies/beatles side of the classic rock fandom talking about the recent death of Little Richard and it makes me sad because he really was one of the main creators of Rock n Roll, especially the scream-singing style.
Chuck Berry defined Rock n Roll guitar, Elvis did…something, but Little Richard was the one who started the rocker voice, the screaming, the yelling, the vocal intensity of the the style. Without his work we wouldn’t have hard rock, punk, metal, screamo, basically every “hardcore” singing style. He started singing loud and fast so that white cover artists, who often covered and “stole” the songs of black artists, couldn’t successfully copy his style. The origin of scream-singing is his defiance of being screwed over by the white system.
The other thing he gave Rock n Roll was flamboyance, theatrics, glam. He was gay and, while closeted or struggling under societal homophobia for most of his career, still was openly flamboyant in both his music and personal style. This seeped into the genre of rock n roll itself, which has always been a little bit gay, a little bit colorful and high-voiced and on the opposite side of mainstream masculinity. His style was also a huge influence on the glam rockers.
Rock n Roll isn’t very old. It’s only really existed for about 65 years. Little Richard lived through all of that. The Beatles named him as a huge influence. Jimi Hendrix used to play guitar for Little Richard’s band. Almost every classic rock band has a song that’s just a knockoff of “long tall sally” or another one of his songs. His influence became a part of Rock n Roll itself.

Hi! I love your zines, I would like to get into making them myself, do you have any advice for starters, how to even do that?
hi! first of all, thank you so much for your kind words! :)
the great thing about zines is that you don’t have to make them for anybody else but yourself. so there really are no rules when it comes to zines, which makes answering this question a little tricky, but bear with me.
working with The Weekly Zine, we quickly realized that we all had different approaches to creating zines: some would go into it with a concept, a theme they wanted to explore, some were just really good at collecting little phrases and things they overheard, and putting them together. for some it would be more of a process thing, where the creation itself is more important than the result, and for some, it was a way to try out new techniques. some zines even became little inside jokes, created in reference to pre-existing a zine (the infamous Drawing While ... series for example).
so my advice would be to start with anything that's on your mind. make a list of your favorite flowers. collage some recent photos. research something and share your newfound knowledge with the world. indulge. make them about you. go down that rabbit hole. also, this one always works.
hope that helped a little bit! happy zine-making! and be sure to share the result with me! :)
When the days were getting warmer again and the first crocuses started emerging from the ground, I collected some songs to hold onto these feelings of renewal. And now you can listen to them as well :)
The flowers are returning.
In the midst of all this chaos, I decided to face my perfectionism and just create a zine from scratch, giving you the thing I know the most about: some lovely music in these trying times.

This is our contribution to the amazing #quaranzinefest . We don’t focus on selling our zines. They werde made for being looked at, not for touching. But feel free to support any other local zinesters posting under the quaranzinefest hashtag!
Made a music zine during the quarantine and I’m happy with how it turned out! 🌻
