I had a cat we rescued from an abuse case where she had to have minor reconstructive surgery to regain jaw function, and she went straight from that into a foster scenario where all of the other cats bullied her relentlessly and she could not leave this person's bathtub without being attacked by 3-5 other animals. She spent a month under my bed.

I did not bother her. I felt so bad for her, I just gave her all the space and time she needed to feel safe. I had a litter box at the foot of the bed, I never saw her use it, but it needed cleaning each morning. I put her food and water on a tray and quietly slid them under the bed to her. After quite some time, I would feel her get up into the bed with me as I slept and curl up gingerly by my feet. I just pretended to remain asleep.

One afternoon as I sat on my couch watching TV she quietly emerged from under my bed. She looked around and then slowly made her way to the opposite side of the couch, climbed up, and laid down there. After a few commercial break she got up and laid beside me. By the end of the show, she was jn my lap. I offered her a gentle head touch and she started purring so hard and so fast I could hear her inhaling between purrs.

When I was a kid - don’t remember how old, but single digits - the newspaper had a feature called, “pet of the week” for animals in the local humane society shelter. Generally animals who had been in the shelter for a while and were harder to home than 8 week old kittens.

One weekend I see a big, long haired tortoiseshell in the paper and somehow convince my mum that we should drive the hour to the shelter, that very day, to see her.

Looking back, the shelter staff were probably apprehensive about letting me hold this cat. I was a petite child and this cat was both big and fluffy. She was also a deeply traumatised 3 year old.

I managed to convince them to put her in my arms, though. As soon as she was handed to me, she smacked me in the face, leaving a deep scratch on my temple. I didn’t react, I just kept holding her gently, probably telling her she was pretty.

Much to the surprise of the shelter staff, instead of getting yelled at, we told them we would love to adopt her.

She took a long time to fully adjust. She had had 5 litters of kittens that her previous owners had drowned all of, instead of getting her spayed🙄 She was definitely afraid of getting hit. She was scared of men, luckily my dad is a gentle, patient man who she bonded deeply with, eventually.

Apparently I had passed her test on our first encounter, because after that initial smack, she trusted me most of all.

We've been working on our bachelor movie "Terminarch" this semester, with @cucuumiia and @eeriedragone ! I was assigned with designing the metal fish featured in our movie. Their designs were inspired by coelacanths as they seemed to have stayed the same for billions of years despite everything, which fits one of the themes of our movie: Dealing with the inability to accept change. We call the fish "Pomba" :)

Part of my job includes buying things for my department

We buy both directly from vendors and requisition through our hospital’s central supply department

Our vendors range from having fairly functional online stores to sending an email with some numbers that are written on a ten year old paper catalog and crossing your fingers

Our central supply web platform is such a pain that we often just walk across campus to the warehouse to pick things ourselves

Even the most well put together vendor websites make me long for half the tag wrangling and responsiveness of AO3

The stitch bank provides written and photo tutorials as well as a video option to learn to do it yourself. There are examples of the stitch in use, resources, references, everything but a needle and thread!

I looked at some of the tutorials last night and holy shit I'm so impressed! They're SO thorough! Not only do they have written and video instructions, but there are photo and illustration options for each image AND a "flip view" button so that left handed people can see all the images in reverse!

silica dust lingers in the air for hours to days too so even if you wear a well fitted n95+ mask (which you need a doctors note and approved medical accommodation to wear) youre still at risk if you take it down at any point for eating or drinking

also they could have just continued using the blending syrup emulsifier they already had but they rolled out silica based blending powder bc they hate their workers and want to punish them for unionizing / bringing health and safety concerns to their union reps i m o

Silica is a tightly regulated OSHA issue. If there's enough of it, they'll say workers need to wear N95 masks and fine the company for health regulation issues.

But I find the idea of baristas getting silicosis to be an especially preventable issue
