Ok like I said in my last post I’ve been thinking about the “dirtbag left” recently.
Initially I kinda wrote it off as just people who want to say offensive shit under the protection of “they have good politics” and I’m sure that’s true for some people in that scene, you know provocateurs just trying to get attention on the internet or whatever.
But honestly, I’m starting to realize that some of the disillusionment with the obsession the left often has on being “politically correct” definitely makes sense. It is true that a lot of the left especially the mainstream left does seem more worried about not doing or saying the wrong thing than actually doing any good. And I think this comes from people wanting to identify as leftist because it’s sort of trendy and so these people care mostly, and in practice really only, about virtue signaling and using the right language because they aren’t actually leftist, they don’t care about any leftist causes. What they really care about is being in the “in crowd” or being accepted by people (who may or may not be genuine leftists themselves) that they think are cool.
And about the appeal of the dirtbag left I think it's because it feels more real and human rather than being all about keeping up some "socially conscious" facade. Because let's be honest sometimes people make jokes or comments that are a bit off color or could be taken the wrong way especially if you don't know the person but like use your judgement!! Jumping on every dumb throwaway doesn’t make you morally superior it makes you kinda an asshole and unpleasant to be around really (and before anyone even starts on that shit like no obviously I’m not defending actual hateful bigoted people and yes you dumbass you can call out/address insensitive things that otherwise good people do).
Not everything people say needs to be a perfectly worded-trigger avoiding-politically correct statement. People aren’t meant to act like they’re being managed by a pr team!! As always love you all and feel free to comment or reply I’m not an expert obvi!! 💕💋
