i've been thinking a lot about jax recently. it's interesting to me how much culpability is assigned to jax for ribbit's abstraction. I think we should consider that jax blames herself for it. we learn about ribbit's abstraction inside of jax mind, and jax is not a reliable narrator. She has always believed herself beyond redemption. she hates herself more than any of the others could ever hate her.

In the same scene we learn Jax believes she killed her own mother by pushing her away too hard, and then we also learn Ribbit abstracted because jax pushed her away too hard. How true are either of these things though? Theres not that much evidence to support the idea that her mom actually died at all, and the sequence of events leading up to ribbit's abstraction is entirely from jax's perspective. I think what we're seeing there has far more to do with how Jax feels about herself, than how Ribbit feels about anything.

certainly jax did not help, her behavior is abrasive, abusive and mean. her anti social tendencies pretty clearly stem from self hatred, from wanting the people around her to hate her the way she hates herself. in her mind thats probably a lot easier than trying to change, be vulnerable, to atone for all the bad things shes done. But at the same time i think its wrong to assign the blame of Ribbit's death so entirely onto jax as to believe her when she says shes beyond redemption.
