I met this lovely cat the other day!! His name was Mufasa, he was very sweet but did not like being picked up, turns out he got out of his owners appartment across the way, but I was able to call them and entertain him in the grass until they showed up to take him home. The pics don’t do him justice, he was probably the prettiest cat I’ve ever seen!

A female honeybee with two fathers -- and no mother -- has been discovered; the first ever of her kind observed in nature

A team of scientists discovered a female honeybee that has two fathers – and no mother – the first ever of her kind observed in nature.

Female bees, ants and wasps (Hymenoptera) arise from fertilized eggs that have one set of chromosomes from each parent, whilst males result from unfertilized eggs. In honeybees, females – queens and workers – have a total of 32 chromosomes, whereas males (drones) only have half as many.

“By definition in all haplodiploids (bees, ants and wasps) the male is haploid – created from an unfertilized egg, meaning it only has one set of chromosomes from its mother,“ said molecular biologist, Sarah Aamidor, lead author of the study and a graduate student in biology at the University of Sydney.

The haplodiploid sex determination system allows for the development of a remarkable variety of biological phenomena, including female cloning, male cloning – and gynandromorphy. A gynandromorph has both male and female characteristics and a mix of tissue from both genders (ref). Gynandromorphs differ from hermaphrodites, which have both male and female reproductive organs.

In honeybees, gynandromorphs typically develop from the combination of a diploid zygote and a haploid male tissue originating from a second sperm (ref & ref). This is made possible by the fact that honeybees are polyspermic, a situation where more than one sperm enters the egg and fuses to the initial cell cluster. These cells then begin to divide and give rise to tissues that become part of the developing embryo.

Every time I eat ribs I revert back to my Homo errectus ancestor as she discovers that setting the zebra carass on fire makes it so much easier to chew and it tastes so much BETTER and she literally discovers the joy of cooking.

Some foods go back even farther.  Eating snap peas off the vine yeets me back to some little pseudoprimate from before the asteroid, enjoying the bounty that had been overlooked by the triceratops.
