the whispers behind her back were one thing. carmen had gotten used to them a long time ago, victor liked to gloat about the things the two of them did behind closed doors. most of his locker room talk was based on lies but carmen never contradicted him. she understood it came with the territory. she had to pay the price, for popularity, for her sisterâs future, for her safety. so she held her head high, her friends showed her fangs, and she showed no pity. whispers behind her back she could deal with. even now, when the entire town seemed to be buzzing with news of her return, everyone stumbling over each other trying to figure out why. but they never would. so she held her head up as if she was still wearing her crown. but having someone call her a runaway bride to her face? that was different. carmen pursed her lips as she was stuck behind sloane of all people. the grocery store at lake wisteria was so small there were only two cash registers and usually only one of them was manned. today, the one cashier seemed to be struggling with a client, so carmen shifted her weight from one foot to the other, holding her basket against her hip. she could keep quiet, if @sloanesssâ did.Â
sloane had never really had anything against carmen, or at least not her specifically. the group sheâd hung around in high school? well, sloane had a lot against them. it was the looks they gave her in the halls, the snickers in the stands of leviâs hockey games, the words written in bathroom stalls. sloane could handle an insult, appreciate it even, if it was warranted. but sheâd never done anything to those girls besides date someone they deemed out of her league, and while sheâd never said anything directly to sloane, carmen was just as bad to her. she remembers the day in the salon well, the family and friends bustling around, critiquing her work. all that perfume. just for carmen to run. if she was honest, sloane thought it was kind of badass, but of course sheâd never admit that. seeing carmen in her peripheral is enough to bring an evil grin to her face, turning just enough for them to make eye contact, âhow much of a hassle was it to send all those wedding presents back? better or worse than cancelling the honeymoon?âÂ
