hey y'all ~

i've been kinda gaming the system on my power bill for a whiiiile now, and just putting $1/day on my account to avoid disconnection... it's worked great for literally more than a year, but last night something fucked up in the system, my payment didn't show up fully on their end, and now my electricity is shut off. since i was already using weird loopholes and exploiting how their billing works (bc i'm broke as shit) they will not work with me at all

they want nearly $1,200 to turn my power back on

i have two ferrets, two cats, and one partner relying on me. ferrets can experience fatal health issues when temperatures get over 80⁰... and now i have no air conditioning in the las vegas heat (this week seems to be a cool 90⁰ or so, but we've been over 100⁰ recently and it gets HOT). my partner was laid off from work a few months ago & has a new job but that doesn't start for two more days (and obv the paycheck won't hit for a while anyway). i've spoken with every local assistance program and they're all either not accepting new applicants, or have a 6 week+ wait

it is. Bad. its quite not good. i assumed it would be bad based on the kickstarter and therefore didnt back but this is bad in such a wildly different way than expected

these are merely some highlights when i was going through it yesterday before i got lightheaded from laughing and had to make dinner

essentially its a piecemeal of mostly d&d 5e, with some pathfinder 2e and maybe savage worlds thrown in. largely seems to be a fairly dark dungeon delving / murderhobo (i hate that term but dont know an alternative) kind of game that assumes lots of gritty tactical combat and pc death

the most charitable reading of it i can come up with is that this is what d&d 5e would be if it existed in the neopets world?? like this is d&d 5e For neopets?? which i dont think is what anyone was expecting and absolutely no one wanted

there is also some sort of internal snafu happening with geekify (ofc) and according to reddit the reason the beta is so late is that they may have gone through several full teams who took all their work with them upon quitting. when the gdoc first dropped there was a whole tab with nothing there that only said the team hadnt been paid to write that

importantly it does not seem like anyone on the team is a ttrpg designer of any kind

some more important facts: the beta was just released - on google docs - with public comments turned on - a FULL YEAR after the physical books were meant to be shipped out. even with 85% of it being ripped right from d&d 5e its incredibly half baked and messy and full of errors

despite being a huge neopets guy growing up i looked at the kickstarter in 2024 and said. lol. thats a trainwreck. i've never seen a PDF copy or character sheet paywalled behind stretch goals before (these were the first two stretch goals, at 2.5x and 3x the original funding goal of 40k usd)

anyway yeah its worse than i ever imagined and i do have screenshots of me telling friends it was going to be awful almost two years ago lmao. i did download a pdf copy to preserve for history cause i cant see the gdoc being up long

god its all really incredible. like the complete lack of any real vision for ttrpg game design here is one thing but you'd at least imagine if they're prioritizing the IP nostalgiabait over the game design they'd manage to tap into the parts of neopets that are notable, memorable, or tonally distinct. and yet they couldn't do that either.

i will say in defense of the skeleton though that there is precedent for fighting at least one skeleton in various combat based neopets spinoff media. although i don't think they were thinking much about Neopets: The Darkest Faerie (2005) For Playstation 2 when putting this thing together. even though they really should have been.

nick neopia was from the 2003 april fools joke and has been brought back a couple times since.

the reason he started the skeptic tank page in 2023 was because he was upset TNT fired him and then became obsessed with "uncovering the truth" his previous employers were hiding.

he's since ramped up the conspiracy grift in the last two years, apparently starting a newsletter and a plushie line as well as promoting moltara obsidian co "obsidian capsules" that can ""cure greyness"".
