Don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to stand up for The Confederate Flag – that is the last thing I would do.
But Captain Von Trapp was taking down a flag someone else had hung over his house without his permission.
This woman was ripping someone else’s flag off someone else’s property without their permission – a flag they had presumably hung themselves and were (one would assume) proud to hang.
As a counterpoint – if you hung the Stars and Stripes outside your house, and someone who didn’t like it came along, ripped it off and tore it up because they felt the USA represented everything that was wrong and bad in the world would you consider it to be the same energy then?
Would you applaud them for exercising their right to free speech for defacing your property and destroying your flag? Or would you be more than a little pissed off?
If someone hangs a flag on your house without your permission then go ahead – rip it up, burn it, destroy it.
But do you really have the right to go around destroying other people’s property just because you don’t like it?
And if you do, does that mean you would like it if they did it to you, just because they don’t like your property?
