15 year work in progress. Artist in the background
[Image description: a staircase with a wooden banister railing. The first post of the banister is substantially altered. The base still has most of its original decorative woodcarving, but above a certain point the wood has been dramatically eroded away.
It looks like when a beaver has chewed halfway through a tree trunk. However, beaver teeth leave rough, broad chisel-marks.
Our artist took a far more refined, meditative approach, using nearly imperceptible vertical strokes to file the wood down gradually over time.
In the background, the artist observes the photographer from a distance. The artist is a small gray-and-white cat. End ID. /]
