An example of how no project is too big or small for us.
This is a very small intervention for an office room which had glare problems on the computer screen. In order to solve this problem and to optimize the space, we readjusted the size of the excessively wide door to a standard size, revised the layout and re-designed the desk to be of an optimum length with a sweet fold-able coffee stand on one side!
Initial sketch ideas and some on-going construction photos of a Sanepa office we’re upgrading. It’s coming together quite nicely!
Anne Feenstra, nominated for “Earthen architecture”, the Terra Awards 2016
Our founding member and Principal Architect Prof.Anne Feenstra has been NOMINATED for 40 best contemporary EARTHEN Architecture buildings in the WORLD.
A jury and scientific committee of prestigious international experts identified and distinguished 40 outstanding earthen architecture buildings that were designed & build after 2000.Amir, the first National Park of Afghanistan in Bamyan province.30 C at 3000 m. altitude, the architects designed a 80 cm thick, locally made mud brick wall. The pitted texture of the center comprises of a mud/straw/mustard oil plaster inserted with flat stones, blends in with the natural beauty of the place. The architects used passive solar energy, double glazing, natural cross ventilation and an underground heating system.
The 'open design process' was key to the project's success in which Prof. Anne Feenstra deeply involves the local community, local crafts people and other stakeholders.
The project will be exhibited in July 2016 during the TERRA Award ceremony in Lyon, France.

Nepal After The Quake By 3Sat Mediathek

The german Media (3SAT,ZDF) mentioned the reconstruction work carried out by SMA in Nepal. Project Architect Bikash Palikhey talks about earthquake resistant building techniques in stone masonry(at 24:53).
Dry Compost Toilet
The existing toilets in the Habeli Outdoor learning center (holc) were not capable of handling the expected influx of new visitors. Keeping this in mind the need for more toilets was felt. The toilets were also meant to be a demonstrative project to teach school children about ecological sanitization. We designed and built a dry compost toilet with heavy stone base and lighter timber structure on the top. Stones and wooden planks used for building the toilet were also salvaged from an old house that was demolished on the site.
We followed a dry composting toilet where human waste disposal system that utilizes a waterless flush in conjunction with a tank in which urine and human fesses are collected separately and aerobic bacteria break down the waste, which later is used as fertilizer.
The Sunrise Point
Sunrise point is an outdoor covered space existing at the Habeli outdoor learning center (HOLC) site before work began. This is a very good spot to watch sunrise and also to sit and also receive plenty of sunlight during winter.
One of the interventions in the HOLC project was improving the sunrise point and making it bigger to accommodate 30 students and to change the slope of the roof so that it more open towards the south. 40 cm walls were raised to provide seating. They also provided more stability to the pillars that were imbedded to it. Keeping up with the overall design philosophy of HOLC, the materials of the old sunrise point were reused after being properly inspected. Twigs and branches that were collected in the winter along with wooden battens salvaged from an old house that was demolished formed a mosaic pattern at the ceiling. The zigzag wooden pattern also provided the roof surface with structural bracing. The corrugated sheets from the old roof were made water proof by sealing up the cracks and holes and reuse again. The water collected from the gutter can also be used for rain water harvesting.
Transitional Home in collaboration with #Art For Nepal.
SMA(Sustainable Mountain Architecture) was able to build one more Transitional home at the Panauti village, near Banepa, 2 hours from Kathmandu , with help of a friend from Delhi , Mr. Rohan Patankar, who started a campaign by selling his paintings and arts named #Art For Nepal after the earthquake hit Nepal on 25th April 2015, to collect funds to help earthquake victims. This transitional home was built for Mrs. Januka Devi Sapkota , at Kuhartar-9, Kushadevi, Kavre with total 5 member in her family.

Transitional Home
After the devastating earthquake struck on 25th April 2015, many families lost their homes. It will take time for them to recover, perhaps 4 to 5 years. As we believe families should live in a place that give them a sense of belonging, we designed a traditional home that is more than just a shelter, beyond emergency survival.
Transportation is not an issue as the material needed for the home come from the rubble of destroyed houses. Only new element is the corrugated steel roof for the outside roof. The inside ceiling is from cloth or timber planks. The base of the wall is from stone. The wall is from planks and bamboo. Door and window are salvaged from the houses destroyed by the earthquake.

GIZ-Nepal Welcome Area

The team of Dutch-Nepali-Indian architects designed and supervised on construction of the Welcome area for the new and retrofitted headquaters of GIZ- Nepal. An existing car porch area has been transformed into a lively Welcome area for the GIZ-Nepal headquarters.
HOLC Map
First Map of HOLC (Habeli Outdoor Learning Center) in collaboration with Sensus Investment in order to provide an educational and learning experience for children in peaceful surrounding of Kaulethan, Okharpauwa.
The vision of the Habeli Outdoor Learning Center is to foreground the relevance of the rich natural, cultural and historical heritage, as well as resources of the local, into contemporary curriculum to make learning more contextual, relevant and responsive.
Sensus Studio

Within the World Heritage site of Patan, Swotha stands proud with its historic temples and Newar community. The space originally built in traditional Newari-style architecture with open plan and heavy wood structures has now been TRANSFORMED into a more open lighter office space.
Each elements that make the space has its own TRANSFORMATION story. They are: 1. Space Planning 2. Thinking Wall 3. Textile Wall 4. A personal table 5. A meeting table
The Studio
A vacant spacious attic in Sanepa is where the SMA team emanates with innovative ideas to create designs that are durable and that suit the local climatic conditions of Nepal.
We call the space ‘The Studio’ as it is certainly not a 9 to 5 standard office setting. The team is working hard to spread awareness and contribute to the rejuvenating of sustainable architecture.
