Curating
arranging
considering lay out
Someone told me that together m pieces look like I am building mini city. I was thinking temple, but I'll take that. How could this progress? Could I push my sculptures mutual developement further, considering from the starthow they will work together. perhaps a bit of cross symbology.
Also this involves conception, which runs counter to my curent style of make make make, then curate.
Some of my earlier sculptures, now curated within the space and interacting with 2d elements of my installation in a harmony (perhaps through monochrome) shared colour that is. That I have not achieved thus far.
A painting I am debating whether or not to have shown alongside. It fits the colour scheme of my work. But would perhaos be too much in the space.
I need to be simple perhaps. That is what this arrangement has helped me to realise.
Some details of the "figure on table" piece. Shows the texture, built up with hessian and plaster, also details of the nail arrangements. Evoking the "primitive'(dnagerous term) and thus referencing the long history of the spirit within sculpture
Finished photos of the corpse in situ. Alongside the words "Bleached white by the sun"
hopefully evokative, suggestive together.
I am not entirely happy with the finished piece, but the nails were A good addition. adding to the fetishistic feel. perhaps referencing acupuncture
Some more details of e painting/ sculpture combo. All plain white ruins, except for a bit of scratching, graffti, restless hand. Like te rude words ofund etched in pompei.
except this is modern. The ageing process artificially applied by me. Am I trying to say something? Or is this process just a result of my attempts at a genuine, spiritual form repeatedly failing in the face of my own postmodern cynicism?
My totem, that was once built up tall has been hacked down. Looking into dereliciton as Tom saw in my work I have hacked back at it even more. This piece exists alongside the painting behind it. Without either it feels empty. Together they somehow work.
The brush on top is an act of whimsy, but I guess it also references the methods of production of the piece, That was added after a conversation with James.
Trying to curate the wall space further
this guys in the second photo have been watching over me for a while. They bring a whimsicality but quite subtley and gentley. Theye are black and white which helps
Monoprints. Have been etching as well in 2d. Print making seems to be working better for me than painting. Something about the finish. The age.
(implied) also it suits monoprint.
Andrew Lister is giving me good feedback
different methods of etching and approaches e.g. I intend to use beeswax and make imprints into it.
I feel like print will be a big part of my project next term.
I am definitely thinking more in terms of space curation now the whiteness has kicked in
I will try and maintain this into the next project, but not necessarily with the white.
I am thinking a first move could be to actually add colour (photographing along the way) boldly with paint.
Innit.
Got stuck. Again asked for advice. Rosie reccommended adding colour just to mask it out again.
Did this and realised I liked it white. Not colourful! so white it went
again. Starting to feel borderline resolved (at least for now) at this point
Woah big step, addd hessian and plaster, and a pole, thought the balloon looked naff so moved it on top. Plannig to light it from the inside, Maybe. Or add loads of colour, It cold for instance contain all the colour in the whole space.
the pole adds a tension or violation perhaps
the strings also
adds to a monumentality in the piece as well. But a monument pushing through a corpse.
I am definitely thinking more in terms of space curation now thewhiteness has kicked in
Experimenting with rubble. Connotations, like Tom Palin has suggested of dereliction, rubble. Added Sack, dislkide. Took away from the visual clarity I thought, CLARTYCLARITTIE
I drew a line around it influenced by the crumbled brick dust of the classic(lyshit) not even classically shit hollywood horror film the Skeleten Key from circa 2005
It is meant to protect and stop evil spirits entering/ exiting.
The head is papier mache, a childlike, whimsical esture, also added a disjointed element to the figure, which I wanted to appear in the reading of the work, chatting with Rosie seems to have confirmed this. Although it has been a divisive point in my discussions.
Got a body from a wicked scrap shop. Mannequin. It was very obvious though so started of adding a layer of shiny shiny foil and painting it glosswhite. This made it very space age. the form was a little to chisselled and my aim was more morbid uncanny. This is not working! for fucks sake.!!! Plaster blocksto suport it of the ground. Idea to make it a bit eerie I guess. I anted this form to be body like. recognisable but something disjointed. This was my goal. So I carried on!!!
Kicking back in the studio with Kate. Peer feedback has been really important this module, I think everyone in the years critical eye has progressed a lot and I am learning to rally value, listen to and act upon the advice of my colleagues. It adds to a sense of community that has been developing throughout our group sense first year that I cherish D'AWWW
This is a more updted version of this sculpture, dunno if i've shown it before. Inclded elements of paint on it, and the others i ae uploaded too, this has added more variety of tone. It's also blended a bit carried on blending my 2d 3d practices, which it woud be nice to unite in someway sort of a la rosie. Althogh making this less a focus of what i do.
People seem to like it, even though it's (was) one of my east favourites. For that reason I am considering it.
