Inspired by a post in Harper’s Bazaar SMAC Members Suma Haque and Julia Franchi Scarselli have combined art and fashion for a new monthly blog installment. Suma is class of 2018 with an intended double major in economics and American studies. Julia is class of 2018 double major in architecture and art history with a CEEDS concentration.
With flowers blooming and the sun shining brighter, we feel summer approaching and the closing of our academic year. As we hustle around campus finishing last minute projects and cramming for finals, it is tempting to give up on all clothes that are not sweats. For those of you who would like to try entertaining the idea of dressing up, we suggest seeking inspiration from the untitled 1943 drawing by Arshile Gorky (located conveniently at the Smith College Museum of Art!) This piece, created with graphite and colored crayons, displays dense, colorful interlocking forms which, in our eyes, resemble the understated elegance of spring. After observing both Gorky’s quirky illustration and the beautiful, blooming Smith campus, it was hard not to gravitate towards the exciting floral prints we had been longing for all winter long. Wearing pastels, flowery patterns and sandals while studying for your next exam might help the process. The countdown is on: just be careful not to daydream of beachside siestas!

Welcome back Smithies! The beginning of spring came along with the end of Spring break and we are absolutely itching to break out our sundresses and shorts. Luckily, Spring Cocktails have given us the perfect opportunity to bust out our fanciest spring wear and give a toast to being able to do things outside for the first time in months! For inspiration, we were drawn to the tittering French ladies depicted in “Life at the Villa” by Marie Laurencin. The airy feel of the lithograph print brings the pre-party jitters to life as Laurencin creates a great variety of looks using a simple, yet elegant, color palette. Taking a more modern, and slightly more minimalistic, approach to the ladies’ looks, we embraced the whites (proudly breaking all fashion faux pas) and the golden accents by introducing a statement skirt to a rather understated outfit. The color white allows the freedom to experiment with multiple textures and colors, so by taking a cue from the new season, we suggest spicing up outfits with a floral accessory, such as a scarf. Finally, do the French ladies justice and throw on a pair of fabulous shoes before making your way down to a night of dancing and gossiping with your equally glamourous girlfriends!

Second Friday Volunteers Needed!
No SMAC this week but be sure to shoot us an email ([email protected]) if you're interested in helping out at Second Friday (3/13) this week. The Smith College Museum of Art needs 3-5 volunteers to work the hands-on activity. This month we'll be using use various materials to create miniature versions of Mary Bauermesiter's optical lens boxes. Set up is at 3:30, the session will run from 4-6pm, then we'll clean up and be done by 6:30.

Hello stylish Smithies! This week, the unthinkable happened – the temperature rose above freezing, and we could not be more delighted. After months of insufferable cold, we are ready to welcome any sign of warmth with open arms and begin storing away the heaviest of our turtlenecks. The drawing “Royal Couple in a Garden Pavillion with Attendants”, by an unknown artist, depicts the bohemian picnics on Paradise Pond that have been in our dreams all winter long. With a color palette full of rich gem-tones, the drawing encourages us to shed our layers and toy with livelier hues while still acknowledging the wintery presence here in NoHo. Pairing edgy knee-high boots with a flowy, Iranian inspired dress allows any outfit to flirt with the oncoming spring and still be practical. This time of the year is also perfect for stocking up layers. A printed trench is great for adding a breath of fresh air to a cold weather wardrobe while still remaining dry. Throw on a scarf, your warmest pair of leggings, and enjoy this (almost) warm weather on a walk over to the Smith College Museum of Art to see other inspiring pieces!
