From her debut, and perhaps best-known album, Seven Waves, Suzanne Ciani’s The Fifth Wave is such a fantastic example of her unique and beautiful take on creating music. She focuses on light melodies, mixed with gentle pads and bass lines to create extremely ethereal and light feeling tracks. A pioneer of her time, she was also known for creating jingles and backing tracks for many major commercials of the early 80s.
Dog Eat Dog was a departure from Joni Mitchell’s normal acoustic-centered work, focusing more on a synth-based 80′s pop style sound. It contains fantastic undertones of anti-fascist messages and overall is just a great listen.
I don’t see many decent examples of just how haunting and beautiful the Irish Pipes can be, but this random demo of a feature on a Yamaha Clavinova really captures it. This guy is a talented musician, and this instrument is fantastic.
Originally created for The Return Of The King in 2003, Into The West is an amazing example of Annie Lennox’s absolutely haunting voice and pure talent.
This is quite literally one of the songs that shaped my musical taste from an extremely young age. We had a VHS copy of Riverdance, and I can remember watching it over and over again between the ages of 4-6. The haunting sound of the Irish Pipes just completely captivated me, as it was an instrument that created sounds I’d never heard before. I think it’s responsible for my love of the Irish pipes and related sounds to this day.
Perhaps most famously (or infamously) known for his creation of the web animation series, Salad Fingers, Locust Toybox (aka David Firth) creates some beautiful original takes on ambient, which I think is very reflective of his animation work as well. Beehive Days works mainly off a continuous loop and some rather haunting vocal samples. Easily my favorite recent music discovery.
From the ever-talented film composer, best known for his work on Blade Runner and Chariots of fire, this song is a perfect example of the beautiful original work Vangelis makes on his studio albums. His use of a continuous and simple rhythm that the song sort of evolves around is a signature part of a few of his early and mid 90s albums. He combines natural and synthesized sounds in a perfect harmony that truly becomes a work of art.
One of the last songs featuring the great Freddy Mercury himself, and the last music video he was in before his death. This song has a special nostalgic tie to me, and it’s my favorite track from Innuendo.
This song really showcases Queen’s style in the later years, with their fantastic mix of drum patters, gentle synth pads, extremely talented guitar solos, and Freddie’s unmistakable voice.

Although I know it’s definitely not something many people agree on, I am a big fan of the movement that music can really be anything you want it to be, and I think this video is a fantastic example of that. Wouter van Veldhoven does some fantastic ambient style experiments with some seemingly old and useless electronics that you’d find in a dumpster. Although perhaps on its own this piece may not be something you’d listen to over and over again, it would work great as a backing piece to a film scene, or it can just be enjoyed like a piece of art; observing it for everything it is.
Although just a random track from a stock music site (used in a recent Victoria's Secret commercial that was pro-trans rights) I think this song really conveys the emotion ambient can really create.
Recorded in a spur-of-the-moment recording session at 3AM in 1988, Israel showed what can be accomplished with nothing more than vocals and a simple backing instrument. Extremely well known because of its use in popular media (ER, Cold Case, Scrubs, etc.), his version is probably right beside, if not above, Judy Garland’s version from The Wizard of Oz.
Popular or not, it’s a fantastic song, filled with emotion, and a fantastic legacy for him to leave behind.
I constantly find myself humming this song, or (badly) trying to sing the two parts of French I know how to pronounce. Either way the lyrics are beautiful and it’s a fantastic song.
