I'm gonna reblog this again bc I'm constantly thinking about it:

Pop Looks Bach serving as the leitmotif for Jay's feelings about Matt tracks the conflict of their relationship throughout the movie.

We get the fully orchestrated, full tempo version in the viceland era: Jay fully on the same page as Matt, his feelings for him totally secure, love in its fullest bloom

But we leave viceland on a sour note and nearly 10 years later, we hear Pop Looks Bach again, and it's Jay playing it quietly to himself, distinctly hesitant, uncertain, almost like he's picking out the notes of a song he used to know but hasn't played in a long time

We don't hear this theme again until the aftermath of Matt's sacrifice: Jay re-realising his feelings for Matt, Jay understanding the lengths Matt will go to for him -- Jay falling back in love

Then Jay playing it again in the corrected timeline, and it's confident, tempo back up. His song, his feelings, his love, fully owned again.

It's the full fucking emotional journey!!!!

You can tell that Matt Johnson is bisexual (not aware of it) bc a straight man would get a younger girlfriend (which he still does) but he also needs to have a 20yo younger boyfriend where he talks about being fated and never abandoning each other. Which is funny if you consider his other boybestie of 30 years that is desperate to work with him always and make a show until they're old men in their 80's, but Matt keeps going away from him to make other projects with ppl who look like him. Meanwhile the creative endeavor is about how one of them is gonna leave but irl it's Matt always leaving Jay for other projects, but still tethering him to his movies in only way he knows how (asking him to score them which is the basis of their friendship)
