Who is Heal the Bay' animal of the year? (Drum roll) 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 Its the Giant Sea Bass! (Stereolepis gigas). The giant seabass or GSB for short, is an amazing animal and the king of the kelp forest. Growing up to 700 pounds and over 7 feet long, this animal is the same size as a small hatchback car! Due to overfishing in the 1950's this unique fish was almost depleted by overfishing,but since then with conservation regulations we are now seeing a comeback of large adult GSBs in MPA's and kelp forests. Here is a time-lapse of a female abalone releasing her eggs though her respiratory shell hole, in an act called broadcast spawning. When one abalone starts spawning than it triggers the others nearby to start also. Both male and female will start spawning at the same time. A female abalone of 8 inches can spawn 1 million eggs at one time! Today we found a red commensal scaleworm (arctonoe pulchra), a type of worm that can live inside of sea cucumbers and other hosts. It somehow came from our feeder kelp and ended up in our touch tanks. They are located from Gulf of Alaska to Baja California, but not common in California!
