“ karma has a way of working and doing its due diligence ”

she  feels  the  breath  of  it  hurt,  like  daggers  scrapping  the  edges  of  her  lungs,  reopening  a  scab  that  makes  her  weaken.  words  are  words  until  they’re  acted  on  –  until  they’re  manifested,  dark  and  ugly  in  front  of  her,  the  prints  of  fingertips  still  lingering,  a  bruise  on  her  skin.  “does  it  really?”  haru  tries  to  smile  for  akira,  tries  to  find  comfort  in  the  words  he’s  always  reaching  out  with  but  something  within  her  fails,  ugly  in  the  way  her  stomach  churns. 

“i,  um,  i’m  sorry  …”  her  words  stumble  and  she  finds  herself  weaker  than  she  wants  to  be,  especially  in  front  of  him,  especially  when  she  should  be  saying  thank  you  instead  of  envisioning  her  fiance’s  face,  still  malformed  even  when  his  shadow  was  gone.  “you’re  right.” 

maybe  he  is  powerless  now.  powerless  without  a  contract.  powerless  without  executives  letting  him  in,  standing  there  at  meetings,  his  eyes  predatory;  relentless.  but  more  powerless  is  she,  wishing  she  could  have  done  more  than  stand  in  front  of  him  and  tell  him  to  leave  her  alone.  powerless  to  her  own  cruelty,  her  own  unbridled  rage,  she  wishes  that  he  could  have  been  dead  instead  of  her  father. 

if  only  she  didn’t  have  to  see  him  turn  his  back,  knowing  he  might  return;  knowing  that  he  might  only  hurt  someone  else  now  that  he  didn’t  have  his  chance  with  her.  “i’m  not  strong  enough.”  haru  says,  her  expression  pinched  in  pain.  “not  like  you.  but  maybe  …  karma  led  me  to  the  phantom  thieves,  stopped  him  from  getting  what  he  wanted.”  she  erases  the  pain  from  her  face  only  to  smile  at  akira,  as  if  her  smile  would  take  place  of  the  thank  you  that  felt  too  painful  to  say.  “that’s  more  than  enough.”  she  wishes  she  could  believe  it.
