AU where friendless Severus starts getting anonymous letters confessing to him that they want to be his friend but don't want to face backlash/bullying so they want to write letters to him.
At first he doesn't respond but thinking it's Lily he does eventually respond, the person writing then admits there not Lily but at this point they are already friends so not so disappointed Severus and this anonymous author eventually start to develop a romantic relationship.

After Snape's worst memory, James and Sirius angry by there punishment, angry at Lily, sad Remus is being cold to them and Pissed at Snape decided to prank him by pretending to be Lily and Sending letters to Severus, eventually James starts to Catch feelings so tells Sirius that Severus stopped responding which works since Remus is talking to them again.
They end up sending letter to eachother for months and Severus is unknowingly dating his bully.
Eventually Severus wants to meet and invites James but wants he sees it's James he basically cusses him out because he (rightfully so) thinks it was all a prank. James furious and heartbroken (internal homophobia, he's been building the courage for months to confront Severus and his feelings) prints out there letters and puts them up all over hogwarts and in the end Snape kills himself and James is left to deal with the aftermath alone, guilty and loveless.
Potential alternative ending is James also killing himself

Severus would write about his family, mental health and all of the bullying
James said he couldn't play quidditch anymore because of an injury he had as a kid (it was actually his punishment for the tree incident) and all the pressure he's facing from his school, family, friends, and the upcoming war but he's writing as an anonymous ravenclaw boy so hides details
James would be really sweet to Severus in one letter and then in the next one say something like "I'd love you if you were a girl" or "you and I are good FRIENDS"

Severus would leave James things around the castle stuff he thinks is cool e.g rocks, bottles, potions.
James would leave; Sweets, flowers, herbs, new pens and replacements for things he broke

I want this fic to be kinda Dark so Severus would go into detail about his abuse he receives at home and school and would also tell James about his mental health like his self harm and how lonely he feels.
Sorry for any James and Sirius fans they are really suck in this AU
