i remember when i was working with epic, the team that was developing me used to talk about my “insane work ethic and unique perspective”. i remember how much they’d hype me up every time i saw them. i truly felt like they got it. i know at least 2 people there were riding for me and i’m so thankful for them. even now, i watch them keep up with me from the sidelines. meanwhile,
the rest of the label moved on, started working with a very famous producers nephew, all for his music to be mid and tank hard. they spent the money on him that was meant for me and a couple of their other prospects. they took him to all the parties, got him the deal, started proudly posting every one of his drops. and at some point it just started to feel homophobic. i remember in one meeting they told me they didn’t want anyone to know their label was behind developing me. at the time, they said it was under the guise of keeping me “truly independent” in appearance. but then when they start proudly posting and publicly hyping their other straight dude artists… what am i supposed to think?
flash forward, i’m here today with a very small label deal, releasing my first music video ever — still in control of my masters and away from the team that ultimately made me feel like my project wasn’t worth any of their time or public support. i’m sitting in the back seat of a lyft, holding champagne and flowers, trying to make it home before the video premieres. it’s looking like i’ll make it with minutes to spare.
KARMA drops in 10 minutes. watch it with me if you can. love you ❤️
