ravenclaw!osc x hufflepuff!gn!reader
summary: reader and oscar are both prefects for their respective houses, the only flaw is that they can’t stand eachother. now, mutual friend and guardian angel, logan sargeant, proposes a guys friends hangout at the three broomsticks. maybe this is where reader learns that oscar isn’t actually as annoying as he seems?
cw: me trying to describe tap dancing, probably mischaracterized george, doriane AND logan… ^^ unfunny jokes i came up with at one am, reader and osc are NOT in their mid twenties — rather in their seventh year at hogwarts
an: here it is my friends, please excuse the formatting and missing of italics, first time writing in docs and i’m still figuring things out… my longest fic to date though so hooray! its currently one am, so that’s where all the weird tap dancing shit came from… excuse that please i do not know what came over me… lmk if you want more of these two and idk hit the bell for notifications and more tap dancing dialogue.
being a prefect is a blessing and a curse all at the same time. you get to feel powerful, get to have authority over younger students — and even if they end up getting scared of you, there’s a certain fun factor to it.
well, unless you’re on prefect duty at the same time as dreaded ravenclaw prefect oscar piastri. because if that happens, and it happens a lot, all that fun will dissolve like sugar in water.
“aren’t you supposed to be in bed, badger?” he says, creeping up behind you like a rabid wolf. except he isn’t a rabid wolf— just a five-foot-ten australian guy with an ego as big as mars. you turn around as if you’ve been startled, while in reality you already knew who was behind you because, after all, this wasn’t the first time this had happened. on the contrary, this happened almost every single week.
you’d become a prefect three months ago in the hopes of the professors recognizing your efforts and letting you maybe, just maybe, skip your potions class a couple times a month. for your prefect duties, of course… but nooo! they put you in nightly hallway duty of all things. with the head ravenclaw prefect. it felt like a slap in the face — a hard one at that, because not only did they not let you skip that damn potions class, but your duties also meant you had to see oscar’s face illuminated by the sparse candles lighting the hallways twice a week. multiple times on some occasions.
now, the first time your paths had crossed on your nightly walks, it ended with raised wands and feet planted firmly on the ground.
“it’s one am, why aren’t you in your dorm?” you’d asked, lumos just barely illuminating oscar’s features. he’d raised an eyebrow, then that damn smirk had appeared on his lips. the same one you he’d make when he was the only one to get professor flitwick’s question in class.
and, boy, was it annoying. even more so when he just appeared in a dark castle hallway like that. not creepy at all.
a chuckle would escape his mouth next, hair falling into his face as he’d tilt his head to the side before finally breaking the silence. “how funny. i was actually about to ask you the same thing!” the light charms radiating from both of your wands cast weird luminescent glows around your silhouettes, making the situation seem even eerier than necessary.
“i could recite the hogwarts rules to you, but it seems like you’d know them yourself, to be frank.” now he’s almost shoving his wand at the reflective prefect badge clipped onto your robe. and — oh. — he’s wearing one too, you realize then, only with a raven on it, as opposed to your badger.
he’s a prefect too. oscar chuckles dryly, fixing his hair with his hand. “trust me, i’m surprised too! really.” a pause, then he continues. “you look like a third year.” the smirk is still present on his lips. you’re speechless, not because you’re scared of him, but because he’s being rude to you somehow without even sounding like he’s trying to.
the lumos charm on your wand wavered softly, possibly from being ignited for too long — though you didn’t know whether that was even possible. “thank you for calling me baby faced, i guess.” you respond, re-planting your feet on the ground firmly. “but, honestly? i’d say i don’t look a day over eleven.” however the joke falls on dead ears and oscar doesn’t even crack the slightest smile.
from that night on, you see him everywhere in the halls while you’re switching classrooms, at dinner, breakfast— even in your exact seat in the library! he stole that! oscar steals your seat, steals your elective classes, steals your job!
the only thing that’s missing now is that he steals your friends. oh wait…! he’s already done just that! well isn’t that great? now, that actually isn’t completely true — oscar had been friends with logan before you had, and maybe sharing mutual friends with someone you resented so much wasn’t the best idea in the first place, but logan had been the one to carry you for your potions project last year.
he’d saved you from failing snape’s class and having to retake it during your summer break — and that couldn’t happen, because you’d been planning to spend that on the sunny coast of spain!
and after doing that for you, you’d practically devoted yourself to the genius that was logan sargeant. but apparently, logan was oscar’s best friend forever, and he also believed that the australian couldn’t do any wrong. that brings us back to present day, actually. what a nice full circle moment, am i right?
“what? what do you mean you’re going to hogsmeade with oscar?” you ask like it’s an accusation, maybe it actually is, you’re not above that. “yes, i am..! why’re you acting like that’s a crime? we’re just going out for a guys night. george and doriane are coming too.” logan pauses, raising a hand to his chin in realisation. “right, not a guys night— a friends get together?” he corrects himself, then looks back at you.
you follow up with a slightly too loud scoff, making some of your peers at the large dinner table look over at you and the other hufflepuff huddled together next to each other. “no— no, it’s just, we were, we were gonna do something tonight. remember…?” somehow your voice almost sounds desperate even though you don’t want it to sound that way, it’s not like you’re annoyed.
totally not annoyed that he’s blowing off your plans for a group of friends including oscar of all people! okay, maybe you’re a little annoyed. for now, you’re set on blaming oscar for this. because whenever something goes wrong in your life, it somehow always has something to do with that damn australian.
your assumption quickly gets proven right because a groan escapes logan. “i know…! i know, and i remember. but— we haven’t gone out in a while, and oscar suggested just going for a couple butter beers. please, y/n..!” your lips part but you don’t get a response out, partly because he’s too quick to start talking again and partly because you don’t know what to say.
“oh, i know! you have the night off prefect duty too right? oscar always talks about how you two accidentally cross paths… how about you just come with us? it’s gonna be fun, i promise.” logan saying that is like seeing, or rather feeling, your pool float pop under you as you’re just about to fall asleep on it.
but, wanting to be nice because logan is your friend and you can’t bare being rude to him. well, maybe you could but… no. you couldn’t be rude to logan.
“only if oscar pays for everything. and when i say everything, i mean every single thing i want tonight. scratch that, he’s going to pay for everyone’s shit.” you say, looking down at your nails.
logan looks at you like an alien for a second before shrugging in agreement, lightly hitting his hand on the table. “i’m sure we can arrange something. maybe not that extreme — but, uh… yeah.” that’s enough for you, you decide. “i’d hope so. because i’m not letting myself be seen in cahoots with that guy.” you mutter under your breath, so quiet that logan barely even hears you speak.
and, oh wow — just as you’re speaking of the devil, he arrives. in, uh… black and blue robes. as one does, of course, when they’re satan personified into an australian man.
his leather loafers hit the tiled floor of the great hall like little tiny bombs exploding on the ground.
right, maybe that’s just a tiny bit exaggerated.
“hey.” oscar says, and suddenly you’re getting up from your seat, but not before shooting him the nastiest glare you can possibly muster up right now.
but instead of reacting, like you’d hoped he would, oscar just sat down in what had been your spot next to logan.
and that frustrates you, as it would most people who don’t get a reaction out of the person they hate. so, you decide, since your favorite seat in the library is free now, to spend the rest of your day there.
after all, it’s still a couple of hours until the dreaded hogsmeade visit. everything is so nice and peaceful without oscar. it’s quiet, you’re in your seat. the one you claimed in second year. there was no way he hadn’t seen you sitting here before, so he’d known what he was doing while he was so criminally stealing your treasured, precious, seat in the huge armchair located in the far left corner of the library.
with a book (which you were definitely not planning on reading) posted up on your lap, you let your body sink into the plush cushion, tension releasing. “this is what heaven feels like…” you mutter to yourself, the book already flat against your chest, the open page definitely bending in more than one place.
before you know it, your eyes are falling closed and head lulling back against the headrest. who wouldn’t fall asleep in a warm library? not to mention with the idyllic soundscape the large room had.
big, sharp dinosaur claws are poking your face. they’re slicing through your skin — wait a minute. dinosaurs?
“…dead?” the voice is muffled at first, then it slowly becomes clearer, and finally your vision unblurs and doriane comes into your field of view. “are you dead?” she asks once more, poking her finger into your forehead. “oh great— hi…!”
why’s she talking to you like a doctor…? you move to swat her hand away. “i’m alive, thanks…” as you talk, your voice comes out as more of a croak than what your voice usually sounds like.
doriane’s got that look on her face that people have when they’re about to say something absolutely groundbreaking. except what she’s about to say definitely won’t even be close to what you’d call groundbreaking.
why? because she’s not standing in front of you alone. no, of course not! george is there, logan is there — and to your demise, to your very demise, he is there.
oscar is there too, and he’s laughing. laughing at you. oh, he’s going to be lucky if you decide to let him keep those damn brown locks on his head. the scissors are basically in your hand already.
“we were waiting for you. you know, to go to hogsmeade? but you didn’t come… sooo…” she starts, then gets interrupted by george, who’s already close to bursting out laughing, too.
the brit nods, “oscar was the one who found you, badger.” wow, so he’d let that nickname spread now, hadn’t he? a groan left your lips, palm connecting with your face.
it just had to be oscar who found you asleep. it just fucking had to be.
logan stays silent throughout the whole exchange, even as you attempt to wait for him to say something, anything. “great, well i’m awake now, aren’t i? so, if i must, i’m ready to go now.” in reality, you didn’t want to go at all. the only enticing thing about said trip was of course oscar wasting his money.
george raises his hands defensively, stepping aside. he then raises his eyebrow at doriane who, in response, also steps aside, leaving only logan and oscar in your direct line of vision.
logan’s face was contorted into an expression that basically said; “you asked for it.” but at the same time it looked weirdly apologetic. and honestly, you weren’t mad at logan, because— yeah! you had sort of agreed to come. you’re finally getting up now, stretching your limbs and properly coming face to face with the group in front of you.
“right, let’s go guys. if we stall any longer, the three broomsticks is gonna be closed.” besides that being a lie, (the three broomsticks is open all night, poor bartenders.) but you couldn’t wait to get out of the library. anything to stop having to endure whatever this conversation could’ve become.
so, you walked out of the library, just simply expecting everybody to follow you. they did eventually— but not before exchanging looks with each other.
you walk almost the entire way alone. behind you, doriane has moved to walk alongside george with logan and oscar not far behind, still completely silent aside from the crunch of their shoes against the gravel.
then, logan breaks the silence. “you know, she isn’t usually this rude, right?” he says to oscar, looking over at the australian. “yeah, no, i do. she’s just got something against me.” he isn’t even looking at logan, he’s looking at you.
you, who’s still walking way ahead of everybody else, hufflepuff house issued swaying lightly with your movements. of course oscar is trying to hide his disdain for you from logan — they’re friends and he doesn’t want to ruin that. after all, it’s no secret that logan is your best friend.
“don’t take it to hard, okay?” as if he’d take it that way. pfft…
hogsmeade isn’t too crowded at this time of year. sure, there were the occasional groups of students fooling around on the roads or raiding honeydukes for chocolate frogs — but not so crowded that you couldn’t move around. the three broomsticks however was a different story.
there was one singular table left, the one in the furthest corner — the darkest corner in the whole place. how cozy! and totally not creepy at all, especially if you’re sitting there with your mortal enemy.
oh wait, that’s exactly what’s happening. wohoo, what a fun time. “i’ll go up front and order, you guys go sit down.” you say, shoving your coat into logan’s arms.
being a hufflepuff comes with feeling the need to fit the typical ‘soft-spoken’ stereo type. the aching need to always be nice to everybody. and typically you were! but having oscar near you and being woken up from your precious — even if unplanned — nap, dimmed your mood even more.
when you arrive at the front counter, you realise you hadn’t even asked anybody for their order, so instead you went by feel. a butter beer for yourself, two pumpkin fizz’es for doriane and logan, a pear cider for george and a peppermint tea for oscar.
full of confidence, because you were sure oscar would hate the stupid peppermint tea, but also because this hangout would give you the chance to catch back up with doriane as you hadn’t done that for a while.
that confidence, however, vanished instantly when the only open seat in the booth was the one next to your dreaded enemy. “i’m not sitting there, no way.” you say before your brain has even processed what just came out of your mouth.
“well, too bad. seems as though it’s the only open seat in the whole house, no?” oscar says, an egregiously smug look on his face. he’d always prided himself on being able to aggravate you.
if looks could kill, logan would definitely be six feet under by now. still, you sit down keeping the most distance you possibly could, half of your body hanging off the booth. it was almost as if being too close to the ravenclaw would burn your skin off, though that might’ve been possible with some sort of spell.
begrudgingly, you end up scooting a little closer, just so that your leg is properly inside the booth once the drinks arrive — so they don’t spill, you tell yourself.
“you ordered me a pear cider?” george asks, eyebrows furrowing together in a slightly concerned expression. you nod, tilting your head to the side, almost in confusion. “you don’t like it?” the brit chuckles, shaking his head. “quite the opposite, i love pear cider.” when he says that, your lips form into an almost perfectly round o shape.
to your utter surprise everybody else seems content with your drink choice too. even oscar. especially oscar. “had no idea you were some sort of psychic, badger.” considering you were literally all wizards and witches, calling you a psychic was a pretty weak call, to be honest.
you purse you lips, ready to blow a raspberry before realizing the better move would be to just ignore your failed ‘prank’ and take a sip of your butterbeer. oscar scoffs out a laugh, shaking his head.
doriane is clearly laughing at you, poking george in the side so that he watches the spectacle too. once he finally looks up, the brunette pokes logan who in response almost spits his pumpkin fizz in your face from laughter, but he holds it back just in time.
“there’s no way you’re angry because oscar likes the drink you picked for him. have you considered becoming a bartender? you’d make a fortune off of predicting people’s drink orders.” he says, trying to lighten the mood a little.
it works momentarily as a little smile is now gracing your lips. what you don’t notice is a moustache of butterbeer-foam spread above your upper lip, making you look like some sort of very not imposing mafioso. “you’ve got a little— something.” doriane says, ever observant, as she points to the foam. you however miss the moustache somehow, and it stays on your face, making doriane bury her face in her hands.
oscar takes that as his cue to wipe it off himself with one of the provided napkins, making your expression turn into a scowl at once. “what do you think you’re doing?” you say, tone sharp and weirdly steady. “you had foam above your lip. like, a huge line.” your expression doesn’t change, but your eyes momentarily flicker to the napkin.
of course the foam was actually on it. oscar wasn’t a liar after all.
“okay. i’m capable of doing that myself, thanks.” a collective groan escapes everybody at the booth, and for a second you think you hear some of the other people groan too. “what? i’m not some damsel in distress. i can wipe beer foam from my mouth on my own.” you shrug, taking another swig of the beer, this time making sure to not get a foam beard.
the remainder of the hangout goes as follows; everybody takes turns ordering more drinks up front, only for you to end up with a root beer float in hand that promptly switches places with logan’s strawberry cider after you had tasted it.
at some point george had gotten up from his seat and had begun to tap dance in the middle of the three broomsticks, drawing unwanted attention from other patrons, only for his tap performance to ignite a whole tap-dance party.
“woohoo!” logan cheered out, arms in the air and hands balled into tight fists. after chugging down the last bit of his third drink of the night, which might’ve been spiked with a tiny bit of a mystery liquor that only he himself knew the name
of, logan too got up and joined george on the makeshift dance floor.
‘this is embarrassing.’ you thought to yourself, yet you couldn’t stop yourself from chuckling just a little, promptly drawing oscar and dorianes attention. “don’t tell me you’re going to join them too… they’re tipsy, badger.” doriane says, now also picking up that godforsaken nickname. “i never thought i’d see logan sargeant and george russell tap dancing in the middle of the night.” oscar adds dryly, leaning back against the padded booth bench.
“did anyone?” you mumble out, gaze zeroing in on logan, whose ankles are currently bending at ungodly angles. since when does tap dancing work like that? since never, you assume.
“hey, guys!” george yells out from the middle of the dance floor, making a beckoning hand movement at the three of you. that alone makes your face go completely pale. no way in hell are you going to fake tap dance with george and logan. so, appropriately, you shake your head — somehow in sync with oscar, though only logan notices that.
a loud laugh escapes his lips and he almost doubles over after stumbling over his own feet. “osc, i triple dog dare you to come dance with us.” oscar grins for a full second before it dawns on him. “no.” he says then, shaking his head. “okay. then you’re paying for badgers drinks!” at that, oscar’s mouth falls open.
both options aren’t ideal, but he really doesn’t want to bust down in front of half of his peers, so he does the next most gentlemanly thing. with a quiet groan, he pulls his wallet from his back pocket, quietly calculating the cost of your drinks. “okay, that’s fine.”
you have to physically stop yourself from gasping out loud, head whipping around to face oscar next to you. “you’d rather pay for my drinks than go tap dancing? bold.” after that, you’re met with silence from the australian, watching him walk up to the bar and pay for your drinks. only yours.
“this is for the, uh, the two butter beers and the strawberry cider. the booth in the far back, over there.” he says to the guy handling the money. “for that hufflepuff over there, eh? they’re a really cute one.” the guy starts. oscar narrows his eyes and realizes he’s seen this guy before, probably in some class last year. “do we know each other?” he asks, already half sliding over the money. “you’re oscar piastri, and i’m callahan delaney.” he states dryly.
callahan delaney. sounds like a wuss, oscar thinks. “okay, cool. what do you have to do with them? what’s your business calling them cute?” for some reason oscar notices himself sounding a little… jealous? no, he’s not jealous.
“what, you dating them? didn’t mean to get too close for comfort, dude.”
this is starting to get ridiculous. oscar would never date you, right? “no. just paying for the drinks.” oscar begins, sliding the cash even closer now. “are you gonna let me pay or are you going to keep asking stupid questions?” callahan furrows his eyebrows, shrugs and stuffs the cash into the cassette.
“okay, okay. sorry. i was just asking.” “well then learn how to keep quiet.”
with that, oscar turns on his heels and walks back to your booth where george and logan have finally settled back into their seats as well, coats on their laps. “we were waiting for you, but you seemed to be having more fun having a staring contest with dear callahan.”
oscar scoffs, looking down at his friends from where he was standing. “are you guys ready to go, or what?” he asks, grabbing his own coat from one of the coat hooks. “well, i’ll have to pay first, but after that we’ll be all good.” logan says, voice still a little unsteady but not in the same way it had previously been.
“so you’re paying for everybodies drinks, but i had to pay for theirs…?” he mutters under his breath, barely audible. luckily for him, no one notices.
upon arriving back at the gates of hogwarts, doriane perks up to whisper something in your ear. “i heard from a little birdie that oscar was asked if he was dating you.”
“sorry? why’d someone ask him that?” you ask, raising an eyebrow at her. “it was callahan. the cashier at the three broomsticks! heard he said some weird stuff about you to oscar so he started… y’know… i guess he might’ve gotten a little possessive or something. but don’t ask me, i just know this because of a little birdie.”
that little birdie was most definitely just the hearing enhancement potion you had recently learned to brew in potions. but you wouldn’t tell her that.
“that’s— yeah, thanks for that information, dori.” you say back to her, patting her shoulder as if you were talking to a dog, which in hindsight might’ve been a little brash.
you turn around to bid farewell to everybody, at least until monday when classes start back up again because you’d definitely cooping yourself up in your dorm for the week end, only to see oscar standing there. alone. and illuminated by the setting sun — like a stupid guy with a god complex.
suddenly the sound of the wind blowing around your ears is the only sound you can hear, along with your own — somehow quickening breath. you try turning back around to follow doriane, but she’s also gone now. like a ghost.
“aren’t you going to thank me for paying for your drinks?”
you should say no. or actually be polite and thank him, like a normal and civilized person would! but instead, you shrug, step closer — and then— out of your own volition, might i add! — then you get up on your tip toes and press a chaste kiss to oscar’s cheeks.
when you pull back you can tell that he’s holding back a smile, the right corner of his mouth twitching. “i would’ve paid for them anyways, by the way.” he states.
“that’s just my natural charm.” you say, dusting a non existent particle of lint off of your coat. “interesting way to thank someone who just spent almost ten galleons on weird drinks for you.”
“i don’t know, maybe my eternal hatred for you is wearing off, gentleman.”
to this day you cannot explain to yourself why you did what you did that day. oscar and you still bicker in the halls, but there’s no bite to it — mostly. you’ve never gone out one on one, neither have you gone on any friend group hangouts with him.
everything is as it was — but without the venom. oscar is still the annoying ravenclaw prefect who scares you when you walk around dark corners and oscar who looks at you a little too long for it to not he considered ogling.
and you’re still you —but maybe you’ve began to be a but more open minded when it comes to a certain australian.
