I thought the second book in the farseer trilogy would be ready at the library today. Unfortunately not. I guess I’ll start another book instead then… *kicks empty can down the street*

I finished assassin’s apprentice a few hours ago… it feels like I need another few hours to process everything that happened in the end.

Some scattered thoughts on the ending in particular…

I knew what I was getting into when starting this series, but man the feeling of complete hopelessness in the last few chapters was so intense. The description of Fitz suffering the effects of poison lying face down in a stable (an inverse of his first night at Buckkeep) was so evocative. And Nosy coming to comfort him because he still loves that boy even after years of separation was so… Nosy!! Burrich saving Fitz from certain death was nice to see, and even if in the end he didn’t say that he will help him, he did in the end and hopefully will become someone that Fitz can truly rely on in the future. I still have complicated feelings on him, but he’s a complicated man so it fits (and he also has the Wit… hm). The scene where Fitz is drowning and reaching out to Verity was also well-done, even if I have some thoughts on that development… AND NOSY. He gave all his strength to save Fitz, and Fitz will never forget it because he carries the scars of that moment on his body. Ough. Even though everything turned out “alright” (at least in the sense of the marriage alliance), there is such a sense of melancholy over everything. Fitz is left vulnerable due to multiple people knowing his position as an assassin, and he’s physically and emotionally fragile after the whole ordeal. The poor boy, he’s still a kid.

Anyway… I do have some thoughts on how the whole climax happened, because parts of it did kind of feel forced. For one, Regal revealing that Fitz is an assassin was dumb and should have alerted King Eyod that the Farseer’s were plotting something that would put the kingdom at risk if the marriage went through. Then they go through with the ceremony anyway even after Rurisk was murdered by (what everyone assumes to be) Fitz despite this proving that the Farseer camp has bad intentions. With the way Regal set things up it would be hard to believe that Fitz was some rogue actor. I don’t know the circumstances just felt contrived and made the Mountain Kingdom rulers look incredibly foolish. Fitz immediately being able to Skill was also kind of contrived, but I can accept it somewhat since he still could do it (it was just blocked off) and being on the verge of death makes sense as a reason for why he suddenly unlocked it.

Related to the climax… I hate Regal. I’m supposed to hate him but he just feels way too cartoonishly evil and he has been cartoonishly evil from the jump, so he’s not particularly interesting at all. Him not facing any consequences really sucks and he was stupid to kill off his loyal men, but I am guessing that Shrewd’s refusal to see that Regal is bad news will come back later. Verity as the good(tm) royal also stinks, both from a political standpoint and also because it feels like the book wants me to forget that Verity didn’t really treat Fitz the best (one of his first scenes is passing all the responsibility of his care off to some random guy and then Burrich).

Despite my quibbles this still was a really good read and I’m excited to finish the first trilogy… I should start the next book tomorrow. If it’s ready at the library lol.
