Parasites and other symbiotes (*symbiosis is actually an umbrella term that includes parasites, before anyone asks) outnumber free living organisms in both species and individual numbers, meaning that the *norm* for life on earth is to live your whole life in or on another creature. Us larger independent beasts are technically special in having adapted to survive the harsh non-living world; to gut bacteria and mites and parasitic worms we're like planets keeping them safe from an immense deadly void.

Saw a vegan meme that was like "you think you need to eat meat for protein, but where do you think the animals you eat get their protein" (showing a photo of a goat)

and I thought, yes there are plant based protein sources, but using a ruminant species to make this point is a miss, because ruminants don't simply eat and digest food in the way you do. They have accomplished the ability to digest rough forage by turning a large part of their body cavity into a habitat for an ecosystem of extremophile bacteria, protozoa and fungi that both allow them to break down the plant material and are themselves digested as part of the diet.

So really, the goat doesn't get all its nutrients from plants, it also eats massive quantities of microbes, and it has incredibly weird adaptations to eat the plants. This is not to discredit plant based diets but to point out how much cooler the world is than we make it out to be.

Saw a post about helping people that used the analogy of "if you see someone fall off a cruiseship and theres a life preserver ring on the wall next to you do you walk away or do you throw them the life preserver? Of course you throw them the life preserver." And i dont want to add to or tag the post with any sort of correction because its literally not the point at all but i am desperate to say that the first thing they teach you when you work on a cruise ship is that if someone falls overboard you Do Not Look Away

If theres a life preserver nearby but you have to turn your back to get it, tough luck. If theres someone nearby who can't hear you but you could run and get them, absolutely not. You see someone go overboard you point at them and never ever let them out of your sight because looking away even once could mean losing them forever, so you just have to trust that someone will hear you scream for help but you cant for any reason look away

And maybe that adds to the life preserver metaphor somehow but mostly i just need you to know if you spot someone in the water you point at them and you watch them close and you scream for help
