I love levels to a joke.

Most people would laugh at a really bad idea for a movie.But then, the next level to that joke is thinking about how executives sat around agreeing upon this bad idea for a movie.The next level to the joke is them being surprised when the movie is not received well.I usually laugh the hardest at the third level to the joke. That's why I so thoroughly enjoy old episodes of the Simpsons, because those episodes have jokes in them I call 'multiple level jokes'.

We all laugh at that scene where Homer is excited about a free trampoline advertised in the newspaper (first level), and then he says 'trampbopoline' and all that - which is what most people quote and find funny (second level).

BUT the next part of the joke is when he races out and Marge yells 'don't bring home any more old crutches', implying that he has brought old crutches home not once but possibly numerous times - that just TICKLES me.
