Suptober Day 20: Haunted👻
I think what interests me about Meg is like... she didn't have to go and do all that. She comes back in s7 and she finds Dean, and says she's there because she has a target on her back and "needs friends." But she honestly doesn't? She's not that ambitious, and she's not a major player — she could disappear, or find help from other quarters with less heat on them.
Like, TFW are the ones at the center of all the metaphysical upheaval in Heaven and Hell and Earth. If she was trying to lay low and not get Crowley's attention, that's... not the direction I'd head. But she takes this opportunity to ally herself with the Winchesters, and then Cas, and she sticks with him when she really didn't need to. Yes he's powerful and vulnerable then, but so is she, and the kind of people that would be looking for Castiel would smite her like a gnat and not even blink. If it was about safety, she could go find a witch or something.
But she believes in purpose, in finding a cause to serve. It's no wonder to me that she connects with Castiel the way that she does, for a couple reasons.
She craves purpose, but she also, I think, craves recognition and approval from the person she sets as her cause. And Cas, unlike Azazel or Lucifer, gives that to her freely and genuinely. He's not trying to take anything from her. As an angel, he's the last kind of creature in the multiverse that should see any value in her. But he looks at her true face and calls her beautiful. He sees her pain, her vulnerability. How long has it been since someone actually sees her? No wonder she was so gone on him.
So she chose this path, she chose to follow Cas. They run in parallel, Cas turning against heaven, Meg turning against hell. Both trying to find a sense of purpose, to commit themselves to something. And it's very telling to me, when she talks to Dean about cause, Cas is looking at Dean. And to me, exploring this idea of serving a cause and finding purpose in the context of free will... they do get into that with Cas, and Meg absolutely is serving as a parallel to illustrate things going on with him more bluntly.
I just would love to have seen where that went for her line too. Not in terms of Megstiel, necessarily, though honestly I don't doubt they would have gone that route had they given her the time to develop that. What I'm hungry for, the potential that I would have loved to see explored, is simply how would this relationship have changed her further? Would we see her soften more? Explore the wrongs she's committed, including towards Dean & Sam and their circles? If Dean changed Cas and made him better, Cas certainly would have done that for Meg. How would this friendship have impacted Cas's arc — his fall from grace, his redemption after Godstiel? Two not-human beings capable of too much destruction, trying to find a sense of purpose, trying to follow a different path.
And what would her and Cas's friendship have done to impact his relationship with Dean? Especially since it takes shape while Cas is still rallying after his grab for power and the devastating consequences? Would this have driven the wedge further? Or would they run parallel redemption arcs? What would have happened moving forward in s8, with Naomi? Or s9, after the fall? How could Meg's presence have altered the way the story unfolds?
There's something powerful there. There's a reason SPN has had more than one antagonist get a soft spot for the Winchesters and flip sides. And I love when they explore those lines, and to me, Meg is the one that got away.

Early seasons Sam Winchester being early seasons Sam Winchester appreciation post.
one for the ages, it’s a tale as old as time 🍃
Hi!!! Good day! I just chanced to see your account! after reading a few of your posts I've followed immediately! You're such a great writer!
I saw you're still? open for asks, I wonder if it's ok to request a kind, shy, bubbly reader friends with sam and dean, they're in a diner or something and reader was being her usual kind smiley self, then this waiter guy flirted with reader! and dean was just seething haha, and oh, sam third wheeling nervous and laughing at Dean :p

The bell above the diner's door jingles as you slip into the booth across from the Winchesters, your smile as sunny as always. Dean’s already halfway through a slice of cherry pie, and Sam’s got his nose in a newspaper.
You, though—you’re a little beam of light in the corner booth, waving shyly at the waitress when she passes, giggling when Dean mutters something sarcastic about the menu. It’s just who you are. Kind. Bubbly. A little shy, but so warm it’s impossible not to notice.
Which is exactly the problem.
