Wavelo is the new bike share system in Krakow, Poland. The system is expanding to 1500 smart bikes at over 100 stations this April 2017.
In 2016, the City of Krakow decided to completely revamp the oldest bike sharing program in Poland and grant a long-term concession to manage the system. The Wavelo bike share system is financed without funding from the city budget, and all operating costs will be covered from user fees and sponsorship contracts.Â
One way to rate the reliability of a bike share system is to compute the probability of stations being full. We used data collected from Citi Bike’s live station GBSF feed at 10-minute intervals, giving frequent “snapshots” of dock status between April and October 2016 (7 months). SoBi's integrated lock alleviates the issues around not being able to park at a full station. If the station is full, just lock the bike to a nearby bike rack and you are done!

Social Bicycles is launching a 300 bike system in Eugene later this year!
In 2016, the City of New Orleans chose Social Bicycles to implement and operate 700 smart bikes at 70 strategically placed locations around New Orleans. The program will be operated through a five-year agreement between the City of New Orleans and Social Bicycles, and will be funded through direct revenues and private sponsorships. City officials said no public dollars will be spent on the program. Ahead of a full system launch later this fall, Social Bicycles was excited to launch a preview system in New Orleans with 35 bikes and 7 temporary stations. Within four weeks, 200 users traveled nearly 1,000 miles throughout the City of New Orleans. In the coming weeks, Social Bicycles and the City of New Orleans will be hosting a series of public workshops to get valuable feedback from local residents on where they would like stations within their community.
Bike share is growing at an astounding rate across the U.S., with over 88 million trips made on a bike share bike in the U.S. since 2010. In 2016 alone, riders took over 28 million trips, on par with the annual ridership of the entire Amtrak system.

Pareto Bike Share
Most people know about the Pareto Principle. It applies to SoBi bike share systems:
20% of the most active users take 80% of all rides and generate 80% of all revenue.
Another application is the membership type:
80% of users are on 'Pay As You Go' type plans that don’t require any upfront fees. The remaining 20% are on subscription type plans with recurring fees (usually monthly or yearly).
With few exceptions, the most active 20% of the PAYG riders are just as active as the 20% of members on subscription plans. These are mostly locals using bike share regularly as form of transportation.
Good bike share pricing model needs to provide balance between regular and casual users. No matter how touristy the area is, the bike share system won’t survive without good adoption from the local community.
