saying stupid is ableist and offensive to mentally disabled people is saying that stupid is a word that has been and still is used to attack and dehumanize and refer to mental disabled people and invoking that because you want to call something âridiculousâ is ableist.

But, if a word can go from meaning something along the lines of ânumbâ to âmentally disabledâ, it can also go from âmentally disabledâ to âineptâ or âunintelligentâ, which is far from âmentally disabledâ. In our modern age, the word âstupidâ is rarely used to refer to people with mental disability. Itâs used to describe people who are inept or do inept things. Itâs best to keep the context of a word in mind, because if you want to go that way then Bully is a term of endearment and Matrix means pregnant animal.
stupid is inherently tied to devaluing a perceived lack of intelligence. the meaning hasnât changed. it sets up a hierarchy system in which âhigh intelligenceâ people are valued over âlow intelligenceâ people.
Finally, just to top it off, âstupidâ has never, ever been explicitly associated with any form of mental disability. âIdiotâ, âmoronâ, âretardedâ, and âimbecileâ have all been associated with IQ ratings (although retarded really just means slowed), but not with mental disability. If you have any examples where these words are explicitly tied to mental disability, Iâd be glad to hear it.
stupid is explicitly tied to mental disability because it is part of the system i described above. in this intelligence system, mentally disabled people have always been considered lower intelligence and hence, lower value. this is more so true for some mental disabilities than others, but even depression is often linked to lack of intelligence in the ableist structure of our society.
itâs also linked to it in that mentally disabled are often considered âlow intelligenceâ (and therefore âless value) because their expressions of themselves differ from that of neurotypical people. consider how nonverbal autistic people are considered less intelligent simply because they donât communicate in the same way as allistic people. consider how people with sensory processing disorder are often marked as lower intelligence because they canât learn or function in overstimulating or understimulating environments.
stupid isnât just about origin. itâs about a larger structure of the hierarchy of intelligence and how âmore intelligentâ = more valuable, and âless intelligentâ = less valuable.
Also, just a quick question: âneurological disabilityâ is a very broad term ranging anywhere from OCD to Amnesia; could you clarify exactly which disability you have? If you are comfortable with that. That would just aid this discussion.
i donât have a specific label for the neurological part of my disability as i have not been diagnosed nor have i found a label that i have researched enough or feel comfortable fitting into. it has been suggested to me that i may be autistic, or i may have sensory processing disorder (which is why i used the examples that i did). some examples of what i experience are: nonverbal episodes, brain fog, excessive difficulty in processing long sections of text (your response is about my limit in most cases), inability to focus or listen to people talk without constant stimming, considerable mathematical difficulties (to the point of constantly miscalculating even single digit problems), extremely poor concept of time and distance, loss of coherence in speech, repeating words and forgetting very very basic words like the names of months for long periods of time, a, fucked up fight or flight mechanism (i basically completely cease functioning when under the slightest pressure from another person, though itâs almost entirely related to how my nervous system reacts rather than anxiety or anything like that) aaaand a lot of other shit. so far, i havenât really found anything that encompasses this, though i have considered it may simply be another facet of my dysautonomia (that is, dysfunctional autonomic nervous systemâwhich fucks up a lot of neurological stuff along the way)
in any case, the intelligence system is one that directly affects me. in fact, i greatly highlight the problems with it because of how i am considered extraordinarily intelligent in specific areas (as in, 99th percentile), but extraordinarily unintelligent in others and how that places me in a bizarre place where i have access to some of the benefits that affords me but am also constantly dehumanized and devalued and have even been abused when it comes to anything requiring the specific intelligences i am often considered exceedingly deficient in.
