What is social networking?
Social networking sites are websites with applications which allow users to create a personalised profile and connect with others including friends.
Social networking profiles can include information about a user, such as their name and interests. These profiles can be customised to reflect a user's personality and are a space in which people can express themselves.
You can include photos and videos on a social networking profile, and most users to select a profile picture.
Depending on the privacy settings, this profile picture can be seen by anyone, including people you may not know.

If you are being bullied and need support, it is important that you read this factsheet and go to the Get Help section. If you know or see someone being bullied go to the Supportive Bystander FactSheet to find out how to help them. Cyberbullying is bullying that is done through the use of technology. For example, using the Internet, a mobile phone or a camera to hurt or embarrass someone is considered cyberbullying. It can be shared widely with a lot of people quickly, which is why it is so dangerous and hurtful.
