Here are some steps to consider if you can’t pay your bills.
From the CFPB:
When bills are piling up, it’s important to remember that you’re still in control. Take a deep breath. There are things you can do if you fall short one month and don’t have enough money to cover everything.
Depending on your situation, ignoring your bills could lead to higher interest rates, damage to your credit score, or repossession of your car or foreclosure. Instead, talk to your creditors and explain your situation. You may be able to make short-term arrangements.
The CFPB has more suggestions for actions you can take if you’re falling behind on bills. We also have free resources like bill calendars and budget worksheets to help plan your spending. If you or someone you know is in a tight financial moment, these strategies can help.

Join our Affordable Homeownership Campaign
From Prosperity (Formerly Known as CFED):
Homeownership is the single largest source of wealth for most American families. It also provides a host of other advantages, like improved health benefits and a greater sense of community. Protecting access to this valuable asset is one of four major federal policy focuses of Prosperity Now, and why we launched the Affordable Homeownership Advocacy Campaign earlier this year.
So far this year, we've taken a number of steps to push back on federal legislation that threatens to upend progress on fair housing. We circulated a sign-on letter opposing the Local Zoning Decisions Protection Act, which would repeal the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule and strip away tools for communities to reverse housing segregation. We also reached out to Congress in opposition to the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act, which would roll back some basic consumer protections for manufactured home buyers.
While our campaign has been active over the last several months, there's still much work to be done. We hope you'll join our Affordable Homeownership Advocacy Campaign, and help fight to make homeownership a possibility for all! Here's how you can get involved:
Sign up for our Affordable Homeownership Advocacy Campaign to stay up-to-date on advocacy opportunities to protect the products and policies that provide more affordable homes to more people.
Join the Prosperity Now Action Center on Facebook to stay connected with other advocates.
Follow Prosperity Now on Twitter and share alerts and advocacy opportunities with your network.
In this political climate, standing up and protecting working families is critical, and by working together to fight harmful legislation and advance good homeownership policy, we can make a difference. Join our Affordable Homeownership Advocacy Campaign and act to protect the programs you care about. Together, we can help put prosperity within reach for everyone.
