Freedom from your horrid life! Freedom from deadlines and people bumping into you without even apologizing afterwards! Freedom reigns supreme!
These were the only thoughts bouncing around in your head as you inhaled the fresh air at your new place of residence: a quaint and quiet cottage in the middle of a forest. What could possibly go wrong?
It’s dark…
You were picking berries in the forest next to your cottage and humming about as you placed filled basket after basket in your tiny shed for safekeeping. The previous owner had left behind a cookbook for you to make various recipes with the items you could forage from around your new residence. He had also told you not to venture too far into the woods until you were familiar with the lay of the land, but the berries growing in the shade looked juicier and fatter than the ones just near the border.
It won’t hurt to go a little more into the forest.
Unsurprisingly, you ended up lost. The sun had set much faster than expected while you were gathering vegetation, and now you felt that the only option you had was to climb onto a tree and wait it out until the sun rose back up. You could barely see more than a foot in front of you, which meant you were constantly bumping into things and tripping on roots.
You sigh and lean back against the bark of a tree. You’re exhausted from walking around, probably in circles too, just to end up more lost than before. You can’t even be bothered by the sound of rustling nearby. It was probably just a rabbit or a deer anyways. Maybe even the oddly colored blue fox you’ve been seeing lately. It perplexes you that foxes could even come in that color. You had only seen snippets of it here and there hiding in the shrubbery. It was never enough to paint a full picture of the elusive creature.
Maybe I imagined it?
The rustling stops, and you finally glance in the direction where you heard it. Your eyes have somewhat adjusted and as far as you can see, there’s nothing there.
“Little one, you shouldn't be here.”
Shivers crawl up your spine without you meaning to scrunch up in fear. You slowly turn around while holding your basket against your chest as a useless defense weapon, expecting to see the grim reaper, but the only thing greeting you is a gentle-looking blonde man.
Oh… It’s a ma- Wait, that's a wolf!
His sweet sounding voice makes you want to lower your guard, but the constant swish of his golden ears and his sharp fangs poking past his lips have you on high alert. He takes a step forward and you’re immediately jumping back and getting ready to run. You watch his ears sag as a small frown makes its way onto his face.
“My apologies, I didn’t mean to frighten you…”
You’ve never met a wolf or wolf-person before. Everyone has always told you to be wary of the beast-people, and you were sure none lived here. They were rare and few, and you only ran into them if you were unlucky. If you had known you would encounter one here, you wouldn’t have bought this property! Beast-people were still people and you’d rather live without socializing anymore, thank you very much! So much for your quiet life.
“Uhm, it’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”
“May I at least aid you in retrieving your fallen berries?”
“My what? Oh.”
You hadn’t noticed that more than half of the contents of your basket had spilled out. A day’s worth of foraging lies near a beastman’s feet…
Is it worth the risk…
You give him another once over. Tall, long hair, and pointy white claws… A wolf was more than capable of lunging the distance that you had set between you two. If he wanted to, you would have been dinner by now.
“Okay…”
His nervous expression morphs back into a radiant smile as he kneels to help you gather them. You place the basket between you two as you keep a watchful eye on him and try not to let him ever get a chance to get closer to you. You would only deposit berries when he was reaching for more and not once did you turn your back to him.
A wolf will always be a wolf. There has to be something grander he’s scheming.
“That should be the last of them. Are you planning to bake a dessert with them?”
His tail swishes behind him with delight at talking to you and you’re unsure of what to think of him and the entire situation itself.
“Probably?”
He tilts his head curiously.
“Oh, like what, if I may ask?”
You wonder if you should tell him, but instead you recall something much more important. The words he had uttered when he first “snuck up” on you.
“Uhm, you mentioned that I shouldn’t be here. What exactly did you mean by that?”
“Oh…”
His smile falls and he starts to look concerned, which doesn’t help your nerves at all.
“Many dangers lurk in these woods. I wouldn’t want any harm to befall you, especially from one of my own…”
“Your own?”
You flinch when you hear howling in the trees. It sounds far away, but…
“H-how many of you are there…”
He lets out a small exhale before giving you a pitiful smile.
“May I escort you to your home? It truly isn’t safe out here.”
Leaves crunch underfoot as the wolf-man guides you back to your cottage. His long hair nearly glows under the moonlight, and you’re tempted to reach out and let your fingers run through a few of the strands. He had introduced himself as Pure Vanilla, while you had simply changed topics so you wouldn’t have to give him yours. A chuckle and he was following along, asking you more about your home. You knew it was odd to essentially give him your address, and not your name, but you didn’t really have a choice right now. You eventually give him a brief description of your cottage in order for him to help you better, and his mouth makes a small “o” as if he had some sort of epiphany.
“Ah! I know! It’s the hunter’s cabin!”
Hunter’s cabin?
“I see. Are you a new resident or…”
The atmosphere becomes heavy. His smile no longer seems as polite with the way his fangs glistened and emerged from under his lips. It was as if his visage was falling apart and revealing a hidden dark emotion.
“New. He sold it to me…”
And just like that, it was like a switch had been flicked and he’s back to his kind, radiant self that he had originally shown you.
“Then, I will be much obliged to aid you in returning to your abode.”
You quietly lingered behind him, not wanting to speak more than you had to. He didn’t say too much either unless it was to occasionally check up on you and see how you were holding up.
There’s no way I wandered this far from my home, right?
But you had been stuck in the forest for hours. Maybe you truly did make a miles-long journey without realizing.
“And it appears that we’ve arrived.”
You peek out from behind him. You can see your homely cottage with its thriving garden and tiny shed. Everything is left how you remember it. Even a basket lays discarded on the floor where you had abandoned it with a “I’ll come back for you later”. Pure Vanilla walks forward into the clearing and you almost feel like stopping him. It’s clear he intends to drop you off at your front door. You can only imagine him looming over you, watching you as you opened the door to your cottage, seeing that you live alone…
“I- I can make it from here.”
He turns around to give you that benevolent smile. You can’t rip your eyes off of his smile. It had never given you too much comfort or a sense of security, but now it felt even more unnerving.
“Are you sure?”
You nod and step into the clearing too. There’s no one around, but you two.
“I think I’ll be okay.”
He opens his mouth before quickly closing it. His eyebrows scrunch up and his nose twitches like he just smelled something distasteful.
“Although, I do think you may have a fox problem.”
“A fox problem?”
You can see his head moving around as his nose continues to twitch until he gazes in the direction of your cottage in concern.
“Yes, a certain fox… He might be a strange color-”
“Like blue?”
Your hands tremble as you think of slapping one onto your mouth. His eyes widen in recognition and his smile makes you nauseous. You shouldn't have said anything and you didn’t mean to. It was the first thing on your mind and you accidentally blurted it out.
“Yes, a blue one. So you have seen him.”
He’s too eager. Too overjoyed by the knowledge you just shared with him. You feel like you need to leave. Right now.
“Haha, yeah. Thanks for leading me out of the forest again, Mr… Uh…”
Shit! I forgot his name!
He places a hand on his heart to show he forgives you for forgetting so quickly and easily. But it wasn’t any of that, you just had trouble thinking straight with this terrifying man slowly inching closer to you.
“Pure Vanilla.”
“Right! Thanks again, Pure Vanilla!”
You quickly speedwalk away as he waves to you, forgetting your basket on the ground, and heading straight to your door..
“But Y/N, your basket-!”
You don’t even bother turning around to look at him. You know he’s probably holding it with a guilt-wracking expression. He scares you. He’s like a lure trying to drag you back into the dark of the night and the woods.
“Just put it wherever! I’ll take care of it in the morning!”
“O-okay! I hope we will meet again!”
I don’t!
It’s only when you’re in the safety of your home, do you declare you’re never wandering off into the woods again, especially not at night. And then, when your heart calms down, you realize.
How did he know my name…
