Tinfoil hat moment but I don't think he was dumb, I think he was strategic. He put her in a situation in which she had to either: sell her car (so the only means of transportation is now in his name), or maybe even to drop out (to have time for the second job) if she wants to feed the kids. He did it right when she was aaaaaalmost done with her degree. Either way, it's sabotage.

Sometimes when an action makes NO sense to us ("he's like a stupid alien"), it's bc we are not understanding its true motivation/purpouse. If his goal was control, financial pressure and limiting her options due to lack of funds, it makes perfect sensie to buy the truck.

No, this is not tinfoil stuff.

This is classic abuser behavior: maneuver the partner into a situation where they feel trapped and cannot escape. The timing on this is too perfect; he saw her gaining agency & power in the relationship and moved to short circuit that.

I am SO GLAD she got out.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this scenario unfold. Ask. For. Help. Nobody will judge you, and they're probably waiting for you to make a move. People notice abuse and want to help.

This is something similar that happened with my parents. I’m not sure what the exact name is, but this tactic is a form of financial abuse that is used to bring someone under another person’s control (knowingly or otherwise.) and it can cause the victims of this kind of abuse severe amounts of stress and anxiety towards money, especially when there is already a limited amount.

The best example I can give is actually something that happened on my 18th birthday a while back. For some damn reason, my dad thought it’d be a good idea to put down $1600+ on a new set of tires ON MY BIRTHDAY, and set up a payment plan of about $75 a month, the same amount my momma’s paychecks went up by at the time.

Fortunately however, fate struck a copper colored curveball right into my old man’s rollerblades and made him break his hip back in April, leading him to be left at his momma’s house while me and my momma prepare to escape him and the whole bloodline on his side. Yes, I did laugh at him, and yes, I felt so much satisfaction seeing that dude lying on a hospital bed.

The best way that I can explain it is that when in a nap— or in any form of sleep— your brain can sort out all the information and emotions you had attempted to process in the waking world much easier due to the lack of information or distraction. No new information or any distractions? The perfect time for the brain to store information and settle the emotions before the body wakes up again! :D

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
