Oh my God, two whole years have passed! We have witnessed what no human being could have imagined.
We have witnessed childhood wrapped in cardboard... and meat divided by the kilo. We have witnessed all the contradictions, and what breaks the heart and tears the soul apart. We have witnessed the support of the people. We have witnessed cowardice, shame, and the fall of leaders and presidents.
Two years, and the bitterness and extent of their physical, psychological, and visual destruction still remain. For that to change, a miracle is needed.
Yes, we have lived as if a stone is being rolled off your chest...
Two whole years that cannot be contained in a film, cannot be borne by stories, and cannot be sufficed by memory.
Two years in which we asked God that when we die... we all die at once.
Two years have passed, and we still need to repair our minds, hearts, homes, streets, schools, and infrastructure, and, most importantly, to feed those whose dream was a piece of bread that they only get every now and then and that is never enough for everyone.
Two years of these difficult days have passed, and every day we are saved by a miracle. But what I remember most on a personal level, the one ray of hope when everything was dark, is you, my friends.
Thank you for your humanity and your struggle for us.
Thank you for your living consciences and pure hearts.
Thank you for crying over us, expressing your feelings for us, staying up late following our news, worrying about what was happening to us, and praying for us.
Thank you for your demonstrations and pressuring decision-makers in your countries on our behalf.
Thank you for your generous moral support.
Thank you very much for your donations. Without you, I would not have been able to feed my children and buy them clothes and shoes. Without you, I would not have been able to leave the dangerous areas, even at the last moment. Without you, I would not have been able to build a tent over the rubble of our destroyed home and rebuild it after we were bombed again. Miraculously, we survived.
We will remain indebted to you until the last day of our lives, and we remember you.
We remember people who did not know us personally, but who fought so that we might live in dignity, with all their strength, courage, and determination.
