I just realized all the kids growing up with Spotify don’t have to spend money on specific music anymore, so they probably won’t have the memory of saving up money to buy their first CD and having it be something super cringy…like I think I saved up $15 for three weeks to buy the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack at Barnes & Noble when I was 9 and I was really proud of myself for that. I just went to see The Hate U Give and it moved me to absolute pieces.

I genuinely learnt so much more about the perspective I am unable to comment on, and therefore feel better equipped to educate other people. It’s made me better able to not just be yet another white person who claims tweets a hashtag in faux interest, and claims to understand what it is like to experience racism. I can never truly understand it, but it is my duty to passionately, urgently care about what is happening in the world to other human beings, and to not let myself get caught up in the spiral of institutional discrimination. I, like many, many white people, need to do better. Because, this isn’t just a movie. It isn’t just a hashtag you can retweet to look cute. It’s real life, and it’s sickening.
