Related to the fotr anniversary and rewatching, I'm having a lot of feelings about Sam and Frodo again.
This is not set during fotr but rotk though, here is my Bag - End Epilogue, which I first started drawing and then ended up expanding into a little story:

rolls outta bed and writes this:
âSam?â He heard faintly, âSam the crickets are even in bed by now.âÂ
Behind his place on a log there lay Frodo, blinking blearily and with mild irritation. âAnâ why are you awake then, Mr. Frodo?â He asked with a hum, turning his sights away from the rocks ahead to Frodoâs pale, vaguely concerned face.Â
âIâm cold. And terribly lonely on the ground, if you must know.â Frodo griped, rolling onto his back and folding his hands over his sadly shrinking stomach. âI thought to myself in my dreamsâ goodness, imagine if I had some sort of companion on which to warm myself against! My, what an idea thatâd be!â He tacked on the next part with a shrug: âAnd then I was awake.â
Sam watched him yawn, teeth flashing a glossy white beneath the moon. âMr. Frodo, one oâ us has to keep watch.â He said gently, stretching out an arm just to allow Frodo to place a hand in his own. The hand was rather chilly, actually. He tsked worriedly. Why hadnât he packed more blankets? In fact, why didnât he pack a whole featherbed and carried the fool-thing on his back?
He realistically couldnât afford to sleep. Not fully, not if he wanted to keep his master safe. But the night was quietâ one might say too quiet, only as neither thought any living thing willingly lived in the Emyn Muil. âRight,â he sighed, taking one last look around before unclasping his cloak, moving off the long-dead log and onto the ground beside Frodo. Who notably very happily attached himself to Samâs side, burying an ice-cold nose into his shoulder. âAh, me dear,â he tutted, pulling his cloak over them both and shifting his head to lay it against Frodoâs pack.
âBetter?â He asked plainly, though he knew the answer was yes. Frodo had already started to drift off againâ which Sam was glad of. The lad didnât get near as much sleep as he should these days. Fingers ghosting over his greying dark curls, Sam lay awake and watchful til the beginnings of morningâ feeling comfortably warm.
âIt's a d a n g e r o u s business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing w h e r e you might be swept off to.â
