It is widely known that the Zoldyck family resides on Kukuru Mountain -- a namesake landmark that anchors their identity. In real world, its likely inspiration is Mount Fuji, Japan's iconic peak. As an aesthetic and religious symbol, Fuji serves as the first key deciphering the symbolic power of this assassin lineage. Volcanoes like Fuji are traditionally revered as sacred kami, intertwined with Japan's syncretic religious history. Amongst the earliest to sanctify the mountain were the Ainu, Japan's indigenous people, who named it the Fire and Hearth Deity. To this day, ascending Fuji remains a profound pilgrimage rite, guided by oshi, much like any holy site. Many believe its summit gathers ancestral spirits, prompting prayers to honour the dead. And as with ancient traditions worldwide, Fuji's inexplicable phenomena birthed myths and folklore that we know are the stories forged to explain the unexplainable.
| Konohanasakuya-hime, the Japanese Goddess of volcanoes and easy childbirth, and wife of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, holds pivotal significance in understading Shinto Cosmology. When Ĺyamatsumi offered his two daughters Iwanaga-hime (Rock-long Princess) and Konohanasakuya-hime (Blossom-tree Princess), in marriage to Ninigi after his descent to Himuka, the celestial grandson spurned the elder sister, deeming her unattractive, and sent her back to her father. The Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), Japan's oldest chronicle complied in 712 CE by court scholar Ĺ no Yasumaro, recounts this myth with a chilling consequence: the lives of emperors, it claims, were thenceforth cut short. Though not a factual historical record, the text deliberately traces the imperial lineage of 7th-8th century rulers back to Shinto deities, most notably the sun goddess Amaterasu. Ĺyamatsumi's curse upon Ninigi's rejection carries poetic solemnity: "I wed my daughters to the divine grandson so his reign might endure like stone and flourish like blossoms, Yet he scorned Iwanaga-hime. Thus shall his prosperity and life be as fleeting as cherry flowers." The tale darkens: Konohanasakuya-hime conceived on her wedding night, provoking Ninigi's accusations of infidelity. How else could pregnancy be so swift? Enraged, the flower proncess immolated herself in her bridal chamber, only to emerge unscathed with her newborn amid the flames. This fiery childbirth cemented her legacy as Koyasu-gime, the kami of safe delivery, worshipped to this day. |
This legend embodies a central theme: the transition from the divine and eternal to the mortal and earthly. By binding his fate to a terrestrial being, Ninigi gradually absorbed mortal traits until he himself became mortal. In Japan, the boundary between kami and ancestors has always been fluid, and these mythic reflections ripple across history mirroring the lives of both ordinary people and those destined to lead. Catching on? If not, let me elaborate: the Zoldycks occupy the summit of their sacred mountain - literally towering above the rest. Given Togashiâs deliberate world-building in Hunter x Hunter, rife with symbolism (the number 4, Phantom Troupe, Chrollo Lucilferâs spider motifs, Kurapikaâs chains, ect.) their dominion over this peak is hardly arbitrary. Myths permeate every facet of society, crystallising a cultureâs core beliefs. The Zoldycks claim the apex of the sacred because they, too, are not devoid of faith: they believe, unshakably, in themselves. And to unravel this further, we need only observe the Zoldycks themselves.
The Zoldyck family is fundamentally structured around the Four Directional Guardians of Taoist cosmology.
But what exactly is Taoism? It stands as one of Chinaâs Three Great Philosophies, alongside Confucianism (ĺć) and Buddhism (äťć). Its foundational figure, Laozi (the "Old Master"), was, according to legend, carried in his motherâs womb for 80 years, emerging with white hair, hence his name: "Old Boy." While some scholars debate his historicity (with theories placing him contemporaneously with Confucius), the earliest Taoist text, the DĂ odĂŠ JÄŤng, was likely a composite work. As an indigenous Chinese tradition , Taoism centres on the DĂ o (é, "the Way") both as a metaphysical path and lifeâs ultimate purpose. Its layered, often paradoxical nature challenges those accustomed to orthodox scriptures or rigid dogma. Taoists revere the sacred and ineffable, viewing themselves as stewards of an ancient continuum. From a Taoist lens, the DĂ o embodies four core principles:
i. The Source (primordial origin)
ii. Unfathomable Mystery (beyond human logic)
iii. Omnipresent Sacred Energy (QĂŹ ć°)
iv. The Universe as Dynamic Process (natureâs ceaseless transformation)
By virtue of its ineffable nature, the impersonal DĂ o has traversed a path from primordial undifferentiation to differentiation. This places primary emphasis on its emanation and immanence within Taoist theology, rendering it fundamentally monistic and panentheistic, with animistic and polytheistic elements being secondary considerations. The ancient Taoist masters espoused a holistic worldview, articulating ideas that would later be recognised as philosophical doctrines. Thus, attempting to bifurcate Taoism into distinct "philosophy" and "religion" proves inherently reductive. The DĂ o or "the Way" is linguistically and conceptually fluid: it functions as both noun and verb, embodying reality as process rather than static state. It represents the stage of cosmic differentiation and the
perpetual transformation of all things. This reflects a profound belief in flux and adaptation: the paramount characteristic of existence itself. The patterns governing these transformations are symbolised by the 64 hexagrams of the YĂŹ JÄŤng from the book 'The Book of Changes', which map the interplay of correlative forces. At its most distilled, the DĂ o is this dynamic interplay that most commonly encapsulated by the dance of YÄŤn and YĂĄng.
| The way begets one;
One begets two;
Two begets three;
Three begets the myriad creatures.
The myriad creatures carry on their backs the yin and embrace in their arms the yang and are the blending of the generative forces of the two.
There are no words which men detest more than 'solitary', 'desolate', and 'hapless', yet lords and princes use these to refer to themselves.
Thus a thing is sometimes added to by being diminished and diminished by being added to.
What others teach I also teach.
'The violent shall not come to a natural end.'
I shall take this as my precept. |
ŠDaodejing. Chapter XLII
To further interpret this, the DĂ o may be understood as a living philosophical tradition, where disciples preserve their master's Way and transmit it to future generations. For instance:
- Mencius became regarded as Confucius' orthodox interpreter of the DĂ o
- Zhu Xi believed he was reviving the dĂ otÇng (éçť, "transmission of the Way"), which he argued had been lost for centuries
Thinkers who upheld this tradition and their followers advocated for a Cosmic DĂ o considered superior to any human doctrine as both a guide to living and governance. This brings us back to the Zoldycks' foundation in the Four Directional Guardians. As Zeno himself implied, their symbolism directly corresponds to:
Azure Dragon of the East (Mèng ZhÄng)
White Tiger of the West (JiÇn BÇng)
Vermilion Bird of the South (LĂng GuÄng)
Black Tortoise of the North (GuÄŤ MĂng)
each guardian governs a celestial quadrant and seasonal cycle.
Zenoâs power is that of the Dragon is aligned with spring and the Wood element in WÇxĂng philosophy. In ancient China, the dragon stood at the pinnacle of sacred symbolism, embodying lesser yang - the luminous, active principle representing sunlight, warmth, and vitality. This resonates with Zenoâs own avoidance of unnecessary slaughter; whether intentional or not, the dragon has always been a harbinger of blessings and good fortune. Myths are more than stories: they root cultures in meaning, shaping history, customs, and even the rigid social structures the Zoldycks themselves replicate. Their strength, their attire, the very design of their estate, all rest upon this symbolic framework.
Silva, by contrast, is the White Tiger of the West, who is autumnâs guardian, greater yĂĄng, and the Fire element. In ancient China, the tiger was synonymous with martial might, a living emblem of the army and brute force. His dynamic with Zeno mirrors the classic dragon-tiger opposition: one technical and precise, the other reliant on overwhelming physicality. During the Han Dynasty, stone carvings of tigers and dragons adorned tombs to repel evil spirits. The tiger, third in the Chinese zodiac cycle, embodies intensity and charisma -- hot-tempered yet generous, restless yet capable of deep loyalty.
Then thereâs Gui Ming, the Black Tortoise of the North, whose element is water, season winter, and energy greater yÄŤn. In Hunter x Hunter, this role falls to Maha, whose longevity mirrors the tortoiseâs mythic endurance, seen in his decades-long slumber and sudden reawakening alongside Illumi and Kalluto for their mission. The tortoise, with its ability to traverse the underworld and foretell events, has always been a creature of hidden knowledge. Its shell is
used for divination as early as the Shang Dynasty (1766â1122 BCE) was believed to hold secrets of heaven and earth. The northern constellation, depicted as a tortoise entwined with a serpent (the Black Warrior), finds eerie reflection in the trio of Maha, Illumi, and Kalluto - a nod to ZhÄnwÇ, the Taoist deity of the North, whose title means "True Warrior" and whose duty was protecting the state. If the Zoldycks are the state, then Illumi, cold and calculating, embodies ZhÄnwÇ himself, while Kalluto, subtle and silent, becomes the serpent coiled at his side.
And here lies the crucial distinction between dragons and serpents in Chinese lore. Dragons, though celestial, are mythical; serpents are real, and their venom long ago taught humanity fear. Where the dragon radiates light, the serpent fades into shadow. They are seen as aloof, emotionless, its voiceless hisses feeding its reputation for indifference. Worse still is its unnerving mystery: it moves without legs, approaches without shadow, vanishes without trace. Ancient people, powerless against it, offered sacrifices to appease it.
| On ZhÄnwÇ: The Dark Warrior of Taoism |
ZhÄnwÇ (çćŚ), the Taoist deity of the North, holds one of the highest ranks in the celestial pantheon. Venerated particularly by martial artists, he serves as the patron of Hebei, Manchuria, and Mongolia. However, his worship spread southward to Fujian and Guangdong when speakers of Cantonese and Minnan dialects fled there during the Song Dynastyâs upheavals.
The Mortal Who Became a God
| Historical accounts suggest ZhÄnwÇ was once Jing Le, a ruler in northern Hebei. His early reign was marked by ruthless bloodshed, both human and animal, until the weight of his sins drove him to seclusion on a remote mountain, where he sought redemption through Daoist cultivation. The turning point came as he washed a labouring motherâs bloodied garments in a river. Suddenly, Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, appeared before him. In an act of radical purification, ZhÄnwÇ ripped out his own stomach and intestines, cleansing them in the water. The river ran black with his transgressions before clearing to crystalline purity. His discarded organs, steeped in sin, transformed into a tortoise and serpent: those malevolent entities that began plaguing humanity. Forced to return, ZhÄnwÇ subdued them, and now they accompany him eternally as both punishment and power. |
The YÄŤn-YĂĄng Dialectic in the Zoldyck Dynasty
In the eyes of ancient China, yÄŤn and yĂĄng transcended simplistic notions of good and evil. They were the interdependent pulse of existence, like masculine and feminine, day and night. Harmony demanded acceptance of both, for without it, opposing forces could not coexist. This complexity birthed the Four Symbols: lesser yÄŤn, greater yÄŤn, lesser yĂĄng, and greater yang, which is a framework that, if applied to the Zoldycks, reveals itself only among those who bore the mantle of Family Head. And then there is Killua, the heir with white hair, a transformer, one who could reshape his Nen into something familiar to them. In this dynamic, he is the center, opposing the North, Illumi - the Dark Warrior - whose bond with Alluka runs deeper than Killuaâs. For from Kallutoâs first appearance, the naming pattern of Silva and Kikyoâs children hinted at another, hidden sibling.
The Shiritori of Blood
The Zoldyck childrenâs names follow shiritori (ăăă¨ă), a word-chain game where each name connects to the next by its final syllable: Illumi (ăăăż) - Milluki (ăżăă) - Killua (ăăă) - Alluka (ăăă) - Kalluto (ăăă¨).
But the kanji betray a darker truth:
Illumi (ĺą ă) â "to exist" (for living things)
Alluka (ćă) â "to exist" (for objects), later reduced to "it" by the family
Milluki (čŚă) â "to watch/study"
Killua (ćŹă) â "to kill/slash"
Kalluto (ĺă) â "to cut/prune"
Nanika: The Voidâs Curse
Why then did tragedy befall the Zoldycks in the form of Nanika: a faceless, eyeless emptiness? Alluka, the fourth child, bears the number of Death. Deny her requests four times, and the penalty is fatal. Yet the shadow cast upon her by Illumi, who, contrary to assumptions, exists as a Person, which twists this further.
| "All living beings, like humans, wish to live and fear death. They live as we do. Do not care only for your own life while disregarding others. Do not kill other beings to satisfy your desires." |
The Zoldycks, who have made slaughter their creed, now face a paradox: their own blood has become the arbiter of a morality they long abandoned.
| Heaven and earth are ruthless, and treat the myriad creatures as strawdogs;
the sage is ruthless, and treats the people as straw dogs.
Is not the space between heaven and earth like a bellows?
It is empty without being exhausted:
The more it works the more comes out.
Much speech leads inevitably to silence.
Better to hold fast to the void. |
Š Daodejing. Chapter V
Can one draw a parallel once more between Zeno, who sought to avoid unnecessary deaths, and Illumi, who nevertheless killed those who were not his intended targets? The teachings also speak of kindness towards all things: "Show compassion to all beings, extend benevolence and love throughout the world, and refrain from harming the living with your own hands. This is virtue, and it shall bring you the blessings of Heaven. That which you seek to achieve will prosper, and you shall find hope in attaining immortality."
And Zoldyck is immortal, yet no, the boundaries between life and death still exist for those who live by killing. But the very name Zoldyck, as one of the pinnacles of the HxH world, is something sacred. A figure whose face few have seen, whose power one may witness only seconds before death - akin to the names of gods. Here, Nanika will not be an ordinary curse; her very existence defies their name, threatening death to something greater. Illumi was prepared to fall for the sake of his family, for the eternity of the Zoldycks. Were his actions in the name of saving his family a crime? Could they be deemed sinful in light of his ancestorsâ philosophy? And what of suffering within the framework of the Dao - will it await him as a consequence of the evil he has wrought?
The nature of suffering and the problem of evil carry different meanings across various Daoist sects, but in essence, Nature itself is amoral, indifferent to man. Death is nothing more than part of the natural cycle. Disease and misfortune are not punishments, and those around are merely victims, for the Daodejing is devoid of sentimentality. For man himself, it is best to follow the laws of Nature and refrain from raising a hand against it, lest he invite misfortune. Yet another Daoist belief posits a connection between illness and transgression - a body radiant with health reflects purity of soul. Not only may personal misdeeds return as affliction, but so too may the sins of oneâs ancestors. Thus, in certain Daoist traditions, an individual may bear responsibility for up to ten generations. It is not impossible that one might act for the sake of others, atoning for their sins. In some cases, a barefoot Daoist priest may even inflict self-mortification in the name of universal good. But what awaits him in the afterlife? Salvation?
Regrettably, Daoist beliefs lack a unified system due to:
- The coexistence of Confucianism and Buddhism;
- Each sect formulating its own interpretations;
The fact that, in early Chinese history, death and the afterlife were primarily the domain of Buddhism, hence, most conceptions of the underworld are Buddhist in origin. The Lingbao tradition of Daoism absorbed many Buddhist notions of the afterlife, and Lingbao priests perform rituals pertaining to the next world, such as rites transferring
merit to the deceased. The Shangqing Daoist scriptures contain detailed descriptions of celestial realms and, to a lesser extent, the underworld; the use of Buddhist or Sanskrit terminology in some of these texts is a clear marker of their Buddhist influence. The concept of reincarnation, too, became a factor in later Daoism. Thus, such ideas are best understood by referencing specific historical periods predating the establishment of Buddhism. Yet it must be clarified that early Daoist thought was oriented towards this life, not the afterlife. Early Daoist communities were founded upon utopian ideals of a new and perfected society. For individual practitioners, whether fangshi, Daoists, or certain members of the elite, the paramount concern was the immortality of the physical body. They had no
interest in what came after death; they hoped never to die at all. They aspired to live eternally in human form, wielding the supernatural powers of the immortal. The quest for immortality was tied to the search for the realms of the immortals, thought to exist on earth, in mountains, on islands, or in other places typically unseen by mortal
eyes. But if the afterlife holds no value, and what matters is the life in oneâs hands, here and now, then where does salvation lie? Salvation in Daoism (here untainted by Buddhist influence) is participation in Natureâs eternal return: yielding to Chaos, followed by spontaneous creation in an endless cycle. It is not a permanent transcendent state or redemption, as dictated by Abrahamic traditions. For Daoism, salvation is not an escape from this world but complete unity with Nature and the cosmic forces. Why Emphasise Chaos? In the Western existentialist paradigm, the dualism of chaos and order is often seen as damaging to both humanity and nature. Yet there exists a counterpoint to this view, an ancient Daoist narrative of chaos and order as a unified polarity. This concept is already implicit in the dynamic interplay of yin and yang. In his work on Chinese philosophy, Ronnie Littlejohn notes that Reality is not governed by a sentient, intentional Being. Instead, it "arises" spontaneously, yet within it, patterns and purpose emerge. Chaos is the very space in which Order can exist. To eradicate Chaos entirely would be to deny transformation, and without change, there can be no Order.
Crucially, Chaos â Disorder. Human-imposed notions of "order" upon nature often disrupt the natural harmony of things. Consider the metaphor of a person attempting to straighten the curved lines of the natural world. Quantum physics reveals that an entity can exist as both wave and particle: two fundamentally distinct states of being. What appears as a straight line may, upon closer observation, prove otherwise; just as the Earth seems flat to the naked eye, yet its curvature becomes visible from a higher vantage point. Computational techniques capable of resolving recursive equations, such as those modelling fractal geometry -- reveal that what seems like "chaos" to the untrained eye contains an implicit Order. Take the Taiji symbol. It is the familiar black-and-white circle of yin and yang. If we treat it as an early fractal and attempt to stretch its sinuous S curve into a rigid, straight line, the figure loses its original form. Yang splits from yin; their interdependence ruptures. This is death. Life becomes unsustainable, incapable of continuation. From a certain perspective, while Dao itself remains an inscrutable enigma, it nevertheless offers resolution to the ambiguities within and around us through acceptance.
This philosophy, like all others, is not without its flaws. Yet, above all, Daoism provides hope and challenges the moral relativism by which the Zoldycks abide. No individual can perceive the full tapestry of existence, for the mind is bound by rigid constructs: good/evil, truth/falsehood, wisdom/delusion. But if one discards these preconceptions, these filters that distort our understanding of the universe, the world reveals itself as it truly is.
For Nature operates beyond such distinctions; it flows unburdened by human judgment. And it is precisely this realisation that unveils a paradox: even in their cruelty and deceit, humans are profoundly human. They crave structure that shackles to restrain themselves, endless introspection, and the terror of their own thoughts. By interfering with Natureâs order, they shattered its primordial unity. And now, the consequences of that rupture haunt them not as punishment, but as the inevitable outcome of their own actions.
| Under Heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness.
All can know good as good only because there is evil.
Therefore having and not having arisen together.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short contrast with each other;
High and low rest upon each other;
Voice and sound harmonize each other;
Front and back follow one another.
Therefore the sage goes about doing nothing, teaching no talking.
The ten thousand things rise and fall without cease,
Creating, yet not possessing,
Working, yet not taking credit,
Work is done, then forgotten.
Therefore it lasts for ever. |
ŠLao Tzu
Nor can the Zoldycks be exceptions to the rule, for in the end, they too are human. From different perspectives, opinions diverge: have they cornered others, all who fear them, or are they themselves the ones trapped? Here, the Dao calls into question the distortion of consciousness and language, for humans possess a unique trait: the intellect. The Dao critiques how humanity has wielded its intellect not as a mirror to the world, but as a tool to impose its own thoughts, labelled "wisdom." By opening themselves to one another, people have allowed their minds to be governed by external forces. Our adherence to this false wisdom has rendered us blind to the world as it truly is and to the Dao itself.
Man follows the earth.
Earth follows the universe.
The universe follows the Tao.
The Tao follows only itself.
So too does Zoldyck follow himself.
Zoldyck and Immortality
The Zoldycksâ entire faith is self-contained. Their insular world and the concept of Family are their only creed, for no external social processes hold meaning unless they touch the family. The first seed of destruction within the Zoldycks was sown by Killua, who defied another tenet of the Dao: loyalty. By taking Alluka from the household and using her power for Gonâs sake - an act the Zoldycks view as betrayal -he prioritised an outsider over their doctrine. In saving Gon, who stands outside their faith, Killua committed an act of profound selfishness.
| The best ruler is
Unknown to his people.
The next best is
Loved and praised.
The next is feared.
The worst is despised.
If there is a lack of trust above,
There is a lack of trust below.
Remain distant,
Choose words carefully.
Whatever goal is accomplished,
Whatever job is done,
The people all say,
We did it ourselves. |
Š Daodejing. Chapter XVII
Virtus et summa potentia non coeunt (virtue and absolute power do not coincide). Thus, it is folly to seek guidance for oneâs life in the gaze of an assassin whose strength bends the powerful to his will.
| And the fields go untilled, nay, exceedingly weedy.
They're content to let their fields run to weed.
All the while granaries stand quite empty and some exceedingly empty.
They have elegant, in clothes and gown to wear, some furnished with patterns and embroideries,
Some carry sharp weapons, glut themselves with drink and foods enjoyed beyond limit,
And wealth and treasures are accumulated in excess, owning far more than they can handle and use.
This is to [molest] the world towards brigandage, it's robbery as extravagance.
In the end they're splitting with wealth and possessions.
Wealth splits, tends to.
This cannot be a highway of dao |
Š Daodejing. Chapter LIII
The world of Hunter x Hunter reflects deep societal divides between rich and poor, strong and weak, healthy and sick: a manifestation of humanity's boundless greed. By surrendering to the empty compensation of immoral wealth, the Zoldycks lost themselves in their pain, paying the price of being unable to function in society. Forced to rely only on each other, they had no choice but to elevate their family name to absolute supremacy: Family is Everything.
Now, merely mentioning their name makes blood run cold. And when you look at their lives, so far removed from ordinary people's understanding, it makes you question the whole idea that "Zoldycks aren't faithless - they believe in themselves." But how rational is this belief? What even is belief? To believe in something means being willing to act on it without proof and maintaining that conviction even when faced with evidence to the contrary. Humans remain human through belief and as long as they think, they believe, and as long as they believe, they exist. Belief is born from suffering, and the Zoldycks' belief was born from pain, finding refuge only in their name - without it, they would go mad. To stop believing in "Zoldyck" would mean losing their soul, ceasing to exist. In other words - dying. And as the Dao teaches through the law of Unity of Opposites: the Zoldycks take lives, and in return pay with their own - continuing to live broken lives with souls twisted by pain and despair, atoning through their delusions. Forced to hide in the shadows, becoming one with darkness, they perpetuate this vicious cycle like any other society. The Zoldycks suffer - therefore, the Zoldycks exist.
| Do you believe that we kill for pleasure? We don't do this for fun. I refuse to work for nothing or die for nothing. |
Š Zeno Zoldyck
I recently started working in hospitality, and Iâll tell you guys right now, the trope of âthere was only one bedâ is not as rare as youâd think in real life. A few times a week, at least, I have guys come in who are working together on projects in town or passing through who have to literally book the last room I have available for the night and lo and behold â there is only one bed, and guess what, they give each other a side-eyed look and begrudgingly take it. So write it up, it happens all the time!!!
Never let your There Was Only One Bed dreams die. I was secretly in love with my best friend for over a year when she graduated and moved to Oklahoma (like 1000 miles away) for grad school. Between that travel restrictions, we were so scared weâd never see eachother again.
At the end of summer, when Covid numbers were at a lower point, I took the risk to visit her in her new apartment and I quickly realized that, unlike when Iâd spent the night at her house before, the couch wasnât made up like a bed. She explained that since her new couch was so fancy and pink, I couldnât possibly sleep on it, and so I needed to sleep in the bed with her. You know, out of necessity. I woke up with her snuggled around me in the middle of the night.
Weâre dating now, and I genuinely think Iâm going to marry her. Just the other day, though, I mentioned that if she hadnât been weird about her fancy couch, I probably never would have like confessed my feelings. AND THEN she stood up, took the cushions off the fancy couch, UNFOLDED IT INTO A HIDE-A-BED, and said âI KNOW.â
THIS GIRL. ORCHESTRATED. BED SCARCITY. JUST SO SHE COULD MAKE THE âONLY ONE BEDâ EXCUSE. Yâall when I said I just about lost my goddamn mind, I just about lost my goddamn mind. I love this sneaky bitch so much and the moral of this story is BE THE ONE BED YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.
Loved your dating hc's!!! They all felt really convincing and in character đđ How do you think the pt (preferably chrollo, uvo, phinks and feitan if thats too many) sleep next to u?? are they cuddlers, kickers, white noise users, midnight bathroom breakers, snorers or whatever else?
Ahhh glad to hear it!! Iâve only really wrote a lot about Chrollo so I was worried the others were OOC-
Iâve only really been thinking of writing for Chrollo, Feitan, Phinks, Shalnark, Machi and Paku but given as you asked for Uvo Iâll add another onto that list! (Small spoiler warning: I love the troupe, but theyâre all messy sleepers and I wonât be convinced otherwise!)
Chrollo
He definitely has a night mask, incense and all that to help him doze off. Chrollo is a chronic suffer of predormitional insomnia: his mind runs a million a minute, man is NOT used to sleeping a healthy 8hrs.
You can guarantee if Chrollo falls asleep before you (a very rare event) youâll find him stiff as a log. He falls asleep in whatever position heâs in and will stay there until he wakes up. Honestly, itâs a wonder he isnât ridden with all sorts of issues (get him a chiropractor one day.)
On the other 364 days a year when he falls asleep after you, well arenât you just the perfect little teddy bear! His arms are always wrapped around you tightly.
If you happen to be a light sleeper? Youâll definitely wake up in the middle of the night to his face buried into the crook of your neck; fingers tapping away at your abdomen as his breathing settles, the smell of lavender drowning out any other senses. So definitely a cuddler. (I will die on this hill)
Sometimes he might even pepper your neck with kisses if he notices youâre awake.
If youâre a heavier sleeper? You better get used to waking up in the morning under a vice like grip, a mat of black hair brushing against your cheek and -whether heâs awake or not- youâre not getting out of it
Big spooner, you could be twice the height of him and heâd still demand it.
Not much of a snorer, maybe the few light hitches here and there but overall heâs sound asleep.
Most nights when Chrollo canât sleep, heâll sit up with a book in one hand and his other arm wrapped around your sleeping form. Sometimes heâll doze off and sometimes heâll only be brought away from his book by your stirring.
On particularly bad nights, where his insomnia truly flairs up, youâll have to listen to a plethora of podcasts or âsoothing soundsâ for him to actually sleep. And yes, youâll have to listen to them. Thereâs something innately intimate about having you indulge him in his interests: makes it far easier to sleep.
Feitan
You cannot tell if this man is awake or asleep 9/10.
âYou sleep. I watch.â Kind of deal, he has many things to preoccupy himself with: like watching you! (In a: âsomeone takes even one step in this general direction, youâll have a lullaby of screaming to doze off toâ kind of way)
Itâs not that he canât sleep, itâs that he doesnât want to. Feitan sees sleep as a waste of time, it bleeds days into days and he could be spending that time well, instead of sleeping.
Everytime he wakes up he mentally kicks himself for having made such a waste of time
Thatâs where you come in! Hope youâre willing to have a human sized cat latched onto you every single night! Big spoon, little spoon, doesnât matter to him: youâll wind up with him clinging onto you for dear life regardless.
Despite this fact however, youâll never know the plethora of times he wakes up in the middle of the night, painstakingly, detaches himself from you and paces around the room feverishly. Muttering about who knows what, head flicking to every angle at even the minutest of sounds. Feitan doesnât like not being alert: loathes it, so this is his way to regulate the nerves that rest often brings.
Feitan is a very light sleeper, any slight movement may set him off and cause him to completely switch back on (sleep maintenance insomnia hits him hard).
He doesnât strike me as a snorer but definitely isnât quiet, sounds like a Guinea pig sometimes. A total teeth chatterer. Seriously, youâll wake up and hear a light âTch Tch Tchâ from wherever the hell heâs grabbing onto you tonight.
Will not ever wake up in the same position he falls asleep in (not that youâll ever know that fact, heâs always looking over you long before youâre awake.)
Trust me: youâll know if Feitan has a bad dream. His claws (yes claws) will be digging into you, his hold on you tightening with a particularly sharp âhissâ of his teeth.
Likelihood is: his sleeping patterns will leave more marks on you than any other activities ever will. But, donât worry! It shows he cares (I think?).
Phinks
Kicker, oh he is a real kicker.
Youâll wind up waking up off the bed more times than you will on it.
On and off cuddler, thereâs very few times that youâll fall asleep cuddling but by god is it a wild guess as to whether youâll wake up doing so.
Phinks will fall asleep with his back towards you, teetering off the edge of the bed. And, In the matter of minutes can have one leg half way across the bed, the other swung over the edge, left hand across his face, right on his chest, mouth slack and whole body at a 45* angle.
Other times, youâll find a knee digging into your back as heâs (very awkwardly) cuddling you from behind.
Surprising the masses (not): he snores. Has a whole box of nose strips to stop this.
Despite all of these, interesting, idiosyncrasies. The few times you fall asleep cuddling: heâs an entirely different sleeper. Itâs like he takes a page out of Chrolloâs book and doesnât move an inch (aside from rolling, heâs a total roller).
The snoring wonât stop though.
Doesnât need anything to help him sleep, his head hits the pillow and heâs out like a light. Real heavy sleeper as well, you could roll him off the bed with an almighty thud and heâd still be sound sleep. Itâs actually fairly endearing.
Will sleep for 6 hours, wake up for 1, roll around for a bit, settle down and then sleep for another 2.
Best pray youâre a heavy sleeper: thatâs all the advice I can give you.
Honestly? Itâs like sleeping next to a bear, vaguely adorable as much as it has you fearing for you life (and place on the bed).
Uvogin
If Phinks is like sleeping next to a bear, Uvo is a bear hug.
Youâll find your place settled neatly against his chest, as if heâs one of those comically large backpacks (like Johnnyâs from Hotel Transylvania). Donât worry about anything, truly, youâll be snug as a bug in a hug.
Surprisingly, not a snorer (when sober at least). Often needs noises to fall asleep to though. If thereâs not calamity afoot then Uvo tends to get angsty; you may have to deal with the occasional outburst.
So, you often have loud games or shows blaring in the background as he rests his chin on your head. Uvo doesnât fall asleep easily, meaning thereâs very few times that you can turn the noise off before you head to sleep yourself. You best get used to sleeping to the volume of a rock concert! (with his constant screeching he blew his own ear drums)
Invest in earbuds of some kind, itâll help the both of you.
The LOUDEST snorer when drunk. I mean LOUDEST. Cotton buds line your bathroom cupboards for whenever he drinks, youâll have to pick out bits of cotton on particularly bad nights.
Absolute hoarder. Whether it be you, a pillow, the duvet, heâll have it and he isnât letting it go. Itâs honestly quite comforting, his presence isnât exactly small, so with this hoarding comes a sense of security.
Heâs surprisingly gentle as well, it doesnât feel infantilising, more like youâre something from a heist that he doesnât want to break.
Can fall asleep anywhere thereâs noise. Itâs a skill, youâll find him contorted in a corner just so long as the TVâs humming in the background. Donât think of moving him, you wonât.
Probably takes a good few trips to the loo during the night. Which, unfortunately for you, given your nightly position: leads to you being woken up every time he does.
Shalnark
Not a fan of cuddles, like at all. Shalnark is quite the squisher when youâre both up and about or even just lounging on the covers, but when it comes to sleeping? Heâll do it, sure, but he wonât be too thrilled most nights. Thereâs the odd time that heâll be uncharacteristically for the idea, pulling you close and running off a mile a minute! He doesnât tend to actually sleep those nights, more ramble on like youâre at some two person sleepover; the sentimentâs there nonetheless.
Despite this fact, heâs very specific with having at least something pressed up against his back -little spooner- and will get agitated if this requirement isnât met.
Podcasts, lots of podcasts. Shalnark has about ten to twenty playlists that heâll be sat scrolling through: trying to find the one he wants to sleep to. Youâll never be privy to these of course, he tends to keep a pair of headphones shoved in some drawer.
Oftentimes, before even attempting to sleep, heâll be scrolling through some forum or busy doing: something. Though, for some reason you donât remember any of his chronic scrollingâŚ
Bathroom breaker, itâs nothing annoying but youâll never not notice the shift in weight, as he swings his legs off the bed and heads to the bathroom. Heâs always careful not to make too much noise, which winds up causing more in the process.
Has a small assortment of glasses of water that will accumulate through the week, all filled to different volumes. He swears heâll drink them! He never does. It just ticks that little box of âjust incaseâ and he canât sleep without it. Same with most other amenities.
Late sleeper, this man will never be up before you. That may be attributed to the fact he never falls asleep before you, but whoâs to say!
Machi
The fact you donât have single beds is both a gift to thank her for and a curse. Machi is a sleep tosser; she tosses a lot.
You tend to sleep on opposite ends of the bed. This is both in part to her overall distaste of sleeping together and the kicking. Oh boy, the kicking.
You know how the immune system can sometimes misinterpret things as threats, causing autoimmune reactions? That Machi when asleep. Itâs like a subconscious instinct, a defence mechanism is you will; itâs certainly a good one! Itâs just, not always needed. Especially not when you wake up at 4:34am after a particularly sharp jab at your side.
Though, some nights sheâs stiff as a board! Not one movement or peep. As if death herself had stole Machi away.
Sheâs not a particularly picky sleeper, Machi can rest to almost anything. However, there is one thing that seems to expedite the process. Fire - whether the simple crackling singing off in the distance, or the chocking scent of smoke pervading the air. It seems to calm Machi, thereâs no foreseeable reason for it. She just, likes fire.
L i g h t sleeper, you canât count the amount of times sheâs jolted awake, swearing she heard something. Windows, doors and anything else that might throw the room into disarray or stir up noise are a must close.
Sleep mutterer. Itâs a rare occurrence, but Machi will sometimes have whole conversations with the air. Youâre usually both asleep when these conversations take place (there was once that you overheard one to its completion. Youâll never tell her of course).
Pakunoda
Incense galore.
Seriously itâs everywhere.
Pakunoda needs some form of soft scent to lull her to sleep. This often comes in the form of floral scents, but can branch off into other soothing smells. Her particular favourites include cedar and amber.
You wouldnât describe what you and Pakunoda do as cuddling, per se. She treats you more like a support pillow than anything else. Arms wrapped around you tightly and chin resting upon your head.
Neither of you will be able to move an inch throughout the night. Pakunoda has a very specific pre sleep schedule that sheâll run through every night (including final bathroom breaks, cleaning and small talk) and after that, itâs lights out. It doesnât matter if you wake up and need something: sheâs out cold. You might be able to escape, if you can pry yourself out. But just know: getting back in the same position will prove twice as difficult.
Not a snorer, hell, you can hardly hear her breathing most nights. If it werenât for the subtle rise and fall of her chest against your back, youâd question if she even was.
Up long before you are, usually has one half of the bed already made (haphazardly as not to disturb you.)
I had a lot of fun doing this one; might return to it for further Troupe members at a later date, so cheers for the ask Anon! (Little irrelevant thing I just want to mention for future reference: if any PT ask includes Hisoka or Illumi please specify as such.)
Chrollo's moods will often slip away from him. Some days he feels capable and powerful, euphoric, able to make anything he wants to happen. Others days his mind is a much darker place, disconnected from reality, getting carried away in one of his many fantasies. It can last for days, or weeks. Something seemingly small will set him off, reminding him of the past.
Violence comes naturally to him after all this time. If he can avoid being violent he will, but to him it is an effective means to an end.
At his core he sees himself as a protector. The spiders are his family, Meteor city is his home.
In his heart, he is a romantic. He loves books, stories, acting, learning about other people. His techniques of stealing nen involve getting to know someone's heart intimately. Chrollo loves observing the actions and emotions of others.
Chrollo enjoys crafting an image for himself and presenting himself in different ways, like a skilled actor, depending on what the situation calls for in order for him to be successful in getting what he wants. He can come off as intimidating - dark and mysterious like his past, or a charismatic gentleman, or just another man on the street. Different people get to see different sides of him.
Side-quest to this headcannon before continuing my domestic Chrollo fic <3
-I need someone to agree with me when I say that Chrollo is the type to do quick, small pecks in public.
-You be hanging with some of the phantom troupe while they're waiting for news from the others. You're laying your head on his shoulder, holding his hand in yours.
-Then suddenly he raises both your hands and briefly places a kiss on the back of your hand before resting it on his thigh.
-A small smile finds his lips as you attempt to hide your blushing face from him. He brings you closer by the waist and gives you another kiss on the top of your head.
-The rest of the phantom troupe just looks away after seeing this display of affection HAHAHA (shizuku hit me up pls)
-In another scenario, you two just finished date night and he walked you home. You turn to him to say goodbye but he gently grabs the sides of your face inches closer, giving you the sweetest peck on the forehead. (RAHHHHH)
-He pulls away for a few seconds as you look up at him, your face burning up, he leans forward and you close your eyes anticipating a kiss. A few seconds past but you don't feel anything, so you open your eyes and his just there smiling AJHFJAHFJ then swiftly (but smoothly, hehehe) kisses your cheeks.
-He's very respectful so kisses on the lips won't be happening until you fully trust him to do so.
I'm going feral y'all, I love writing wholesome moments with his man. Also artworks are not mine, I'm trying to find the artists so I can give proper credit cause these are WOW they are so good.
Feel free to send requests for headcannons or fics you guys want me to writeee. I'm not the best tho so excuse any grammar mistakes wahahaha
killuaâs undoubtedly the type of boyfriend to constantly keep a polaroid photo of you tucked in his wallet everywhere he goes. occasionally pulling it out and just admires your adorable pose and smile, pressing light loving kisses onto the captured memory of you. this is despite even if you guys see each other often, or perhaps maybe every day. killua would still maintain this quiet habit of love for you, no matter where you were on earth.

Hi there!! big fan of your works..you still write for HxH right? If so can you maybe write hc's or a tiny scenario where reader is killua's older sister? Pure fluff really!! đ Thanks a bunch and even if you don't write for hxh anymore I hope you had a wonderful day and continue to have good days ahead of you!! :) Bye bye -anon
A/N: I am so sorry for delaying this so much! I have been really busy these days, Ily Thank you so much for liking my work! I hope you have amazing days too, you are so sweet :(
Alright, so Killua isn't close to any of his family members except Alluka because she is nice and cares for him, we'll assume that you are similar to her in that way.
You've always been protective over Killua, secretly patching him up when your parents disciplined him which oftentimes ended cruelly for both of you, but sometimes they did take pity on both of you.
Your mother actually adored you, but you knew it was only because she always wanted a daughter, no more attachment than that.
I think Killua calls you by your name instead of adding a respect kinda suffix.
I hc that Killua is really sleepy around you because he trusts you so much, you run your nails on his scalp and he just đ¤
I think Killua doesn't like eating with family except for you and Alluka because they must have poisoned his food in small doses to help him develop resistance to poisons, they must've done that to your food too, but he eats well around you â¤ď¸âđŠš
When he was younger, Killua would collect tiny flowers for you and run to give them to you. He collected dandelions once, and ran to you like, "Y/N, flowers!" and you are like where are the flowers? He looks down and sees only the stem and starts crying :<
You made Killua's hair into those tiny pigtails that look like palm trees đ¤§
Tries to teach you how to skate, gives up within a few hours
He is annoying let me tell you that. No affection in front of people. No headpats, no hugging, no forehead kisses nothing in public.
But when you guys are alone or around Alluka, he like hugging you...sometimes only okay?

I love when you find an author who just has a good flavor to their writing. It could be the way they handle characters, the way they use certain tropes or themes, even the specific lilt of their words. Its familiar and comforting and carries across different stories, like coming back to a place of comfort and recognizing the furniture.

shoto might not seem like it, since he's rather cold and distant towards everyone else, but he's actually quite the clingy boyfriend!
he's touch starved and loves nothing more than when you touch him, whether it's hugs, kisses, holding hands or just resting a hand on his shoulder or waist!
he doesn't get flustered by that type of intimacy! you never saw your boyfriend blush before, only smiling, when you shower him with your love!
shoto loves to call you by your first name, but also calls you by pet names like âdarling", âbelovedâ or âmy loveâ on occasion!
since shoto comes from a privileged background, he's able to shower you in gifts! though he does try not to spoil you!
but whenever he gets to fulfill a wish of yours, he'll gladly do so! whether it's something as small as craving cake at 3am or as big as wanting to drive in a carriage for a date!
dates with shoto vary from something fancy like carriage rides to expensive restaurants to cheap fast food that you ordered for movie night to enjoy alongside some trashy movies!
as long as you are around shoto, he's able to enjoy anything! and he does like to try out new things, as long as it's with you!
shoto's siblings welcome you into the family with open arms, as well as his mother! only enji is reluctant to accept you, as he views you as a distraction to shotoâŚ
as for your friends, shoto tries to get along with them, but doesn't put a lot of effort into befriending them. he's interested in you, not your friends, so he doesn't understand why he should spend his time with them if he got you!
shoto tends to get a bit jealous of your friends as well! he wants to be your favorite person, even if he hasn't quite realized that himself yet. so seeing you get along so well with other people makes him wish it was him insteadâŚ
