Bunji Garlin - "Soca Run Town"
I feel like a dolt for only hearing this now.

" ‘Discrimination is Discrimination’ by Groundation Grenada – addresses the fact that while most people in the Caribbean reject other forms of arbitrary discrimination - they understand why it is problematic and toxic for our societies - sadly, the same understanding isn’t extended to discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity (SOGI). This is not to say that all forms of discrimination are the same or operate the same. There are however crucial parallels between various forms of discrimination that are often ignored. The campaign visually juxtaposes discriminatory remarks in popular media in a way which makes the parallels apparent.”

A longer version of the video I posted last week. This cut (from the Minneapolis Public Library) contains more footage from Trinidad.

Further explorations into the East Asian penetration of West Indian music.
I was wondering if I could find any other East Asian calypso tunes after discovering Grace Chang's "Oh Calypso." The first thing that came up is this Chang Loo version of Nat King Cole's "Calypso Blues." Earlier this year I tried finding every version of that song (admittedly, not a calypso) and I did not come across this decent little freakbeat, so a happy find, even if it's not within this Tumblr's normal purview.
Same Grace Chang version of "Oh Calypso" from yesterday's post, but this one overlaid with a pantomime from the Taiwanese film The Hole.

For a much more scholarly take on calypso off-Tumblr. I definitely feel guilty that I don't take more time to read everything this guy writes.
So this happened on Grey Anatomy last night. Hear that song in the background? It’s by one of our local music/soca artistes- Ian Alvarez (aka Bunji Garlin). The song Differentology, is also one of my favorite tunes to listen to when I’m running- take a listen and you may figure out why…

An excellent podcast episode that sort of puts endeavors like this tumblr_blog to shame.
