That adhdfeel when you were SO PRODUCTIVE then you decide, âalright time to take a breakâ and then never get back to being productive all day because other things have caught your attention.

Timelapse view of lava moving on the plains near Puâu Oâo, Hawaii. The hill in the distance is called the âPaliâ, it is the mark of a large normal fault created by part of the island sliding out towards the sea. Lava cascades over the Pali on its way to the ocean during the eruption. This is substantially sped up from how fast Pahoehoe lava typically flows.

something i donât see a lot in tumblrâs rhetoric about mental illness and recovery is a distinction between recovery through suppression and conformity and recovery through coping.
suppression and conformity is not recovery.  it implies that you are simply repressing the symptoms of your mental illness or disorder and causing yourself more pain.  suppression implies that you are ignoring your mental illness, not acknowledging your symptoms, and conformity implies that you are putting on a neurotypical facade.  so many people assume thatâs the end goal of therapy and medication (should people choose to do that) or general recovery. that people are trying to âcureâ you.  itâs where i think a lot of the âi shouldnât need to get betterâ rhetoric comes from.
but thatâs not what recovery is.  recovery is coping.  itâs learning about yourself and how you tick.  itâs learning to recognize and acknowledge symptoms so you can better understand them and, ultimately, not let them control you.  itâs understanding that being âwiredâ differently isnât a bad thing, but it can make things harder, and learning to recognize those distinctions and address them so you can make your life easier.  itâs recognizing that for some people, therapy and medication are the path to coping, and that the end goal of them is to make that learning and self-discovery process easier so that those people can do it independently in the long run.
recovery is not changing yourself to fit the world.  recovery is learning how to look the world in the eye and say âi now know how to coexist with you now.  i now know how to thrive.â
This is a really helpful framework and distinction.
However.
I think a big thing contributing to this disconnect is that there are a lot of different mental disabilities, and for some of them, actually, suppression is what ârecoveryâ means. There are a lot of autistic people on tumblr. People donât just come to that definition out of nowhere.
And where this gets complicated is that a lot of us have co-occuring mental health disabilities. So you have 1 person with at least 2 different mental disabilities, one where ârecoveryâ is an extremely loaded word, and one where it might point to helpful strategies. And thatâs a recipe for pain.
I actually do have recovery, such as it is with the meaning given by OP, as a goal for my PTSD. But it took me a really long time to be comfortable saying that, because of what ârecoveryâ as a concept has meant for me and my community. One of the most pernicious things about ârecoveryâ meaning suppression in some contexts is that it harms peopleâs ability to access helpful frameworks for other situations. The pain compounds and radiates out and spreads beyond us.
What Iâm trying to say is that this isnât people being bad at discourseâthis is real people being hurt by toxic concepts. And if our goal is to reduce suffering, that needs to be acknowledged.Â

Ok so I rly fucking need to clean my house. Do any other People With Depressionâą have any tips or ways you motivate urself to clean? Because this feels like the hardest goddamn thing in the world even tho I know itâs not and Iâm just continually frustrated with myself and have been for the past two weeks.
HOO BOY DO I HAVE DEPRESSION/EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION CLEANING TIPS
in no particular order (because I have depression and executive dysfunction):
1. If something sensory about cleaning bothers you, eliminate that before you start. For example, I wear gloves to do the dishes. If the sound of the vacuum bothers you, wear headphones and turn up the music. etc.
2. If you can, make a list of everything that needs to be done. Then acknowledge that you probably canât do it all, and circle all the things that absolutely, no matter what, have to be done. Pick one (ONE! ONLY ONE! START WITH ONE!) of those things and break it down into smaller steps. Then even smaller steps. Seriously, if step one is âstand upâ and step two is âwalk to closetâ and step 3 is âget mopâ, thatâs fine. It can be that small.
3. Take a break. âBut I literally only started five minutes ago!â Donât care. If you want a break, take a break. âAt this point Iâve spent more time on breaks than Iâve spent on cleaning.â Ok, but youâve spent more than zero time on cleaning, so youâve accomplished more than you had at the beginning. âIf I take a break it wonât get done!â If you burn out it wonât get done either. Take a break.
4. If nothing is working, try what I call bin cleaning/box cleaning. Take a big trash bag and a box. Pick up the first object you see. Step 1: Is it trash? Put it in the trash bag. Step 2: Will you use it in the next 2 days? No? Put it in the box. Itâs a problem for Future You. If youâll use it in the next 2 days, take time to put it away. Rinse and repeat.
5. Did you get distracted and forget what you were doing? Donât worry about it. Just clean a thing. It doesnât matter if itâs the thing you were cleaning before. You have to clean lots of things, so just pick a thing and clean it. Eventually youâll get around to the thing you forgot.
6. If you have to do a thing you really hate, do a thing you like afterwards. I hate doing dishes, but folding laundry soothes me, so thatâs a nice one to do afterwards. YMMV. If there are no cleaning things you like that you can do afterwards, see number 3.
7. Make it fun. Play loud music and dance while youâre cleaning. Wear something that makes you feel cute, or if you prefer, something comfy. Light your favorite candle. Whatever.
8. If itâs nice out, open a window. Seriously, it helps.
This is seriously so helpful, thank you.
Autistic-related UK organizations to avoid
Itâs fairly common to hear about Autism Speaks and the many and profound ways in which they harm Autistic people, especially during April; but we donât have Autism Speaks here in the UK. Instead, there are a number of charities and organizations that are related to Autistic people, and, in my experience, itâs rare to hear much about them and their flaws in Autistic rights activism.
So here is some information Iâve put together about some of the main Autistic-related charities in the UK that should be avoided or at least treated warily. Some of the organizations do some good work, Iâm sure, but itâs important to highlight the ways in which they do harm to Autistic people.
This list is not comprehensive and there are many more organizations that I havenât included.

the worst feeling is watching your room get messier and knowing you should clean it at some point and motivating yourself to clean it and trying to clean it but ending up not being able to do anything
