Haruhiko Hikimoto x Odio トップをねらえ! (Aim for the Top / GunBuster!) c o l o r f u l Daicon V: The Gainax Sprit (A virtual Retrospective) Note* When I think Of Gainax I think of three anime specifically that perfectly encapsulates the Gainax sprit. Those of course being Gunbuster, NGE and, Gurren Lagann. sadly in the west I feel like Gunbuster get’s over looked a lot. It is hard to find a hard copy of the OVA outside of Japan. It is not streaming on Netflix or Crunchyroll. It has no Funimation dub. In fact I had to dig pretty deep into some archives to even find decent fodder to work with, as well figuring out who owned what for licensing was kind or an ordeal. Still Gunbuster is a gem of a series. It was the first of many things for the studio. The first time we see what would be known as the “Gainax bounce” A mecha anime being used as a vehicle for more existential storytelling. Touching on concepts and ideas about space that would later be expounded upon by films like “Interstellar”. As well Gunbuster was the directorial debut for the legendary Hideaki Anno. I think it is safe to say that Gunbuster was in fact the blueprint that Gainax would follow into the future as well as being one of the best mecha anime ever in my humble opinion. I honestly cannot say enough about it. So if you have never see t please seek it out. It is worth a watch. and I hope you enjoy these colorings I have done of Haruhiko Hikimoto’s illustration. These are actual character references and promotional materials used for the OVA. It was cool to get to work with a little piece of Gainax history. Something I hope to continue as this retrospective moves forward. … Also I would like to take a moment to honor a place that is dear to my heart, and I do not think I can talk about this series without bring it up. That is of course the island of Okinawa. A place who’s history is just as sorrowful as is beautiful. A place I think of as a kind of home. So I dedicate this set to the people of Okinawa, and I truly hope to see a day where it will be free to make it’s own decisions and celebrate it’s own unique and beautiful culture. Thank you for giving me your time, as always. You are appreciated.

Heya, welcome to my virtual scrapbook. This is probably more of a blog, but I plan on posting whatever's on my mind whenever I have something, like the doodle I did above (isn't it pretty genius). Here's to hoping this is a very frequent thing for me
Hajime Ueda x Odio フリクリ (Fooly Cooly) c o l o r f u l *Part of the Daicon V virtual retrospective. These was some of the most fun I had editing. I used artistic license with these like I have never really done before. the photographs were taken and edited by me. They are both from my time in Houston. As well the 9th page was re paneled using dif panels from separate pages. As well I retranslated all the text from English back into Japanese. This was a really fun set and I want to do more. As always thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy them as i enjoyed making them.

hideaki anno x odio The Daicon Pages (A tribute to the early work of Hideaki Anno, and Studio Gainax) c o l o r f u l Note* Sketches made my Anno in the early 1980′s. Around the time of the DaiconIV animation short - the time he was working on (SDF) Macross: Do you Remember Love. You can see the first hints of Gunbuster here as well. I wanted to do these to pay tribute to the roots of this industry defining artist and one of my heroes and probably my biggest influence creatively. As well the studio that changed the face of the industry forever. These are The Daicon pages, I do hope you enjoy. Thank you.

Things to Do in the Belly of the Whale
Measure the walls. Count the ribs. Notch the long days. Look up for blue sky through the spout. Make small fires with the broken hulls of fishing boats. Practice smoke signals. Call old friends, and listen for echoes of distant voices. Organize your calendar. Dream of the beach. Look each way for the dim glow of light. Work on your reports. Review each of your life’s ten million choices. Endure moments of self-loathing. Find the evidence of those before you. Destroy it. Try to be very quiet, and listen for the sound of gears and moving water. Listen for the sound of your heart. Be thankful that you are here, swallowed with all hope, where you can rest and wait. Be nostalgic. Think of all the things you did and could have done. Remember treading water in the center of the still night sea, your toes pointing again and again down, down into the black depths.

“What I’ve learned is: I have no students, I have no disciples, I have no place people come to. I’m a wandering person. I just come. I feel I’m a networker. My image of myself, which I tell the audiences all the time, is: I am a mouthpiece for a process a lot of us are going through. And my job is to say it well. And that’s it. I’m a networking agent. I am not an enlightened being. I am not a guru. And in that way, then, if they say, “Isn’t he humble?” And they project it, that’s their projections. Then what I have to learn to live with is not to buy other people’s projections. And that’s a good art for all of us to learn: How to see a projection coming at you… and let the other people’s projections go through you…”
