Will the docile Prince become a kind King, a violent Monarch, or a ruthless Tyrant? Will you have any say in it? And how much will your relationship change?
Develop your personality, see how your choices build, and change your bond with Mathias.
It's time to help him choose. Will your monarch Love the Guard or Be the King?

ABOUT THE GAME;
This game is my first prototype. I'm trying to see if I can give you the freedom to build your relationship with a character while also deciding how you feel about your past and present.
Our experiences (and the way we feel about them) help define who we are, so, in this game, I'd like you to decide yours—and to face whatever consequences come with that choice.
This story will have 4 chapters. :)
♥♥♥♥ This game is free and still under development. Right now, you have 2 out of 4 chapters + 1 Extra Story. If you want to support the development of LtGBtK, please consider leaving a comment on the dev page, following me, and sharing this post!

CHARACTERS;
Mathias Jan Yvanson (LI) - The Crown Prince - 28 - He / His
You and Mathias were raised together. As you grew up, he would often read for you, treat your wounds, and he honestly thought he was protecting you while your whole life went up in flames.
Mathias is the future King of Opala, but something seems to be missing, and you're not the only one who sees it. With Mathias being the target of a ravenous court, it's up to you to give him the guidance and answers he needs—or to sit back and watch as the flames get higher. He may seem innocent and good, but there's an underlying layer of guilt shaping his personality. Will you enforce it, break it, or use it in your favor?
Mandreis Jay Yvanson - The Grand General - 26 - They / Them
Mathias's sibling and the-child-who-didn't-have-a-whipping-boy. Like you, Mandra was also a victim of King Elias's punishments, and it shows in the many scars they carry.
Everything Mandra does has a reason, and no matter how reckless, rude, or violent they may be, you can be sure of one thing: they'll have Mathias exactly in the place he should be, one way or another. Mandra was once the child who ran after you and Mathias. Today, they're the Grand General of the Opalean Forces, and the symbol of everything that could've gone right—but didn't. Their intentions? Not even the Goddess knows.
Melike Jal Yvanson - The Ambassador - 22 - She/Her
Mathias's younger sister and the child-who-was-sent-away. Melike has been living in Safira as a hostage an ambassador for the past five years. She is considered The Royal Flower of Opalean nobility, and despite having stayed almost a decade away from home, she is still loved by the nobles and the people alike.
Also known as the “Child of the two Queens,” Melike has always
been a constant in the Opaleans' lives. When Queen Yvana lost control, Melike’s missives from Safira, read out loud by criers in the public market, were the only thing filling her people with hope.
Melike is a gifted Arcano, attentive, gentle, and terribly intelligent--but she is also dangerous. She likes the metaphor about flowers and thorns, but, as her namesake indicates, she prefers the idea of being poisonous.
Queen Yvana Jal Yvanson - THE Queen - 53 - She / Her
The Queen was the one responsible for bringing you into the Castle, decades ago. She used to be sweet and good while you were growing up, but something changed and nobody knows exactly what. Now, as the Azure Taint consumes her, Queen Yvana seems to slowly go back to her former self. Be careful, though. Her gentle countenance hides secrets that go much beyond the black cherry wood forming her crown.
Doctor Helena Filtchen - The Spymaster The Royal Doctor - 56 - She / Her
Brutal when needed, incisive when asked, and always paying attention. Some people might think her long-lasting, romantic relationship with Queen Yvana left her too soft to keep acting in the shadows, but Dr. Filtchen is always ready to prove them wrong.
She's now focused on studying the Azure Taint and on finding a cure. If she'll find it in time or not, that's another story.
Master Mercurio - The Great Arcanos - ??? - He / Them
Nobody knows exactly where he comes from, but "Master Curio," as Mathias has always called him, is possibly one of, if not the most powerful Arcane Mage in all the Five Kingdoms. Nobody knows why or how Master Curio chooses their students or how many they are, but he is in Opala now to train Mathias—and he better not waste the opportunity.
... And YOU! - The Dragon Commander
Child of a lesser bourgeois, you were raised in the Castle with everything a royal child could have—plus a painful coating of scars that mask your back, arms, nape, and face.
Build your own Dragon Commander, your relationship with Mathias and the others, and discover the past that binds you all, so you can stir your present in the direction you want... and maybe decide the future of the entire kingdom.

Villains are meant to stay away from Heroes, no matter how powerful--or hot--they are. But when a famous hero becomes a criminal and sparks start flying, can a villain resist?
Supervillain Léon Dickens aka Reality Warp, loves the perks of working under a world-dominant megacorp that buys-slash-steals lifeforce. TV appearances, evil schemes, explosions, latte machines--he has everything a villain could dream of. For him and all the other employees at Invidia Corp, being selfish is great. Things change when internationally famous (and hot) superhero, Grizzly Bear, invades their secret HQ and—wait for it—asks for a job!
Unemployed, overdrawn, ashamed, babysitting her 5-yo sister, and chasing a dream career that doesn't seem it'll ever work out, Mara meets a mysterious person bleeding on the street. The stranger asks for her help and promises to be a better friend than they'd ever been, but Mara never saw them in her entire life and she's about to call the police when the stranger... well... dies.
And yes, that would be weird as hell in itself, but things only get worse when the stranger comes back to life and shows Mara into a new world filled with monsters that need slaying, secrets that need keeping, truths that need unveiling, and a crescent evil that threatens everything she holds dear.

i love this game so muchh :)) i just finished replaying for the thousandth time!!!
i noticed that mandra calls the dc greedy piglet and i was wondering if theres a specific reason for that name (that i maybe missed) or are they just being silly 😭?
aaaa thank yooou! i'm so happy you enjoy the game this much! *-*
hahahahaha! i love this question, anon! 🤣🤣🤣 I had planned to touch on this in the second game, but it'll probably take *checks clock* at least 8 months for us to reach that part, sooo.......
here's the thing: Mand's nickname depends on what was your DC's "mistake" in Oscanza, and it's supposed to be, in the same way that they call Mathias "Mattie," a lighthearted way to poke you about something that torments you, hopefully until you're ready to let go. (Mand's logic...)
To Mandra, the only difference between "Mattie" and DC's nickname is that the intention behind "Mattie" is """pretty clear""" (to Mandra, at least), while Mand thinks of DC's nickname as a well-guarded secret, a private conversation they have with DC every time they use it, and that only *they* know about--a connection between Mand and DC that no one else has.
Mand hopes they and DC can still have a real conversation about Oscanza one day (they almost had one while keeping watch in the 1st game, but not to the degree Mandra wanted/needed).
the 3 versions of that nickname have: 1, a plot-relevant adjective + 2, a cute critter (to "soften the blow"). "greedy piglet" is what Mand calls a DC who sees themselves as "naive," and I won't explain WHY, but here's the excerpt from that section (about DC's "mistake" in Oscanza), so you can take a guess if you want!
ALSO, i love piglets and they are the cutest and "piglet" in portuguese is "porquinho" (or "poiquinho" if you're being cute 🥺🥺🥺) and i absolutely love that word, it's so adorable, you have to almost pout to say it and I 🥺🥺🥺🥺❤️💕
heeello, everyone! I just released a new patch for LtGBtK on Steam and Itch.

It was a pleasure to speak with @ataleofcrowns about A Tale of Crowns, the top-voted game in the Fantasy category!
AToC is a sweeping fantasy romance inspired by Middle Eastern cultures and traditions. Blending fascinating world-building, unforgettable romance options into a truly distinctive story, this is a must-play (if you haven't already) and 100% a deserving winner in a stacked category.
We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we enjoyed putting it together! Read the other interview with @wings-of-ink for God-Cursed here.
You can find the list of fantasy winners here.
About the author
There’s a lot that people don’t know since I don’t really post much about myself or my personal life, and I’d honestly prefer to keep it that way, which I suppose is in and of itself something that people should know! I’m just naturally a private person, so I would like people to pay attention to my work first and foremost. I also struggle answering questions about myself in general, so it’s easier this way haha.
About the game
It’s a high fantasy romance story with Middle Eastern roots.
Tell me about your journey into interactive fiction and what you’re working on right now
Aside from AToC I also write for fun (traditional fiction that is), but it’s nothing I would ever post since it’s just for myself and to practice at writing. As for interactive fiction, I’ve always been very fond of choice-based games since I was a kid, so when I discovered the medium of Twine I thought it was a perfect way to try my hand at it for fun. It started as a hobby and then it unexpectedly developed into something more from there.
What was the inspiration for this game, and why did you want to write a story in this genre?
Aside from my enjoyment of the choice-based genre, I also enjoy fantasy, but in Western spheres you usually get European-inspired fantasy settings for obvious reasons. When Western authors do decide to include West Asian representation, it’s usually in an exoticized or fetishized form. So I wanted to create something that reflected art that was recognizable to me and others like me.
Are there any specific themes or messages you hope players take away from your work?
This is a bit broader than what the question asks for, but: I hope it inspires and motivates people to seek out or create spaces for themselves instead of seeking representation in spheres that have proven hostile to anything that diverges from the norm, whether it be in regards to culture, race, gender, sexuality, etc. I find this more useful than begging such creators to please consider us as human beings when writing their stories. Besides which, you realistically can’t expect any single person to perfectly cater to and represent your individual needs. It’s better to make or seek out art that resonates with you and supporting that than waste time and energy hoping for scraps.
What’s the one thing you’re really proud of that you’ve written so far? Do you have a favorite character or scene that you’ve written?
My favorite scene is and still remains the coronation scene in Chapter 7. It touches both on a lot of world-building for the setting of the game as well as personal development for the Crown, who up until that point has felt like a survivor just trying to get by. Now, for the first time in their life, they’re being entrusted with something monumental and terrifying: the wellbeing of an entire nation. It’s the “real” beginning of the game, in a way.
Any books, music, movies etc. you’re obsessed with at the moment, or would like to recommend?
This kind of gets back to the earlier question of what inspired me to write AToC/fantasy, but I saved it for this because I want to give a massive recommendation for everyone to check out the light novel series Twelve Kingdoms written by Fuyumi Ono. It’s also available in anime form, though that is left unfinished, and the light novels have recently gotten an updated English translation for the entire series. I never cared for traditional Western fantasy books, but Twelve Kingdoms was one of the works of fantasy that made me absolutely fall in love with the genre and inspired a lot of AToC as well.
What’re you excited to tackle/implement/work on next?
I’ve begun brainstorming my next IF work after AToC is finished. I won’t start writing on it until AToC is in its final chapters, but until then I’m letting it marinate for the next couple of years. I’m planning on it to be very different from AToC, in a more horror-oriented and much smaller setting, with an older and experienced cast of characters and MC. Though of course it will be romance-centric as well, because I’m a romance writer at heart haha. They’ll all be a lot more morally ambiguous or, in some cases, outright bad people. I think it’ll be a refreshing change of pace after having worked on AToC for so long!
Happy Pride: LtGBtK was banned in Russia for its LGBTQ+ characters
I'm so sorry.
I'm heartbroken to announce that Valve removed LtGBtK from the Russian Steam Store, as requested by Roskomnadzor—the censorhip body on Russian—without any previous communication with me. I received an e-mail telling me about the removal and that was it, no chance to appeal.
If you're in Russia and can't find my game on Steam, that's why. I'm not sure what's the situation on Itch right now for you, but I think it's not any better.
My game is all about community—and finding the strength to go through shitty moments with the people who love you... so it's especially hurtful to remember that there are so many members of our community going through so much shit right now.
In Russia, in Brazil, in the states, in Saudi Arabia, all across the world.
I'm sadder for the queer community (all around, but specifically in Russia this time) than for my game, and I'm even more sad that this happened SO CLOSE to Pride.
Also, I was not the only one. I've been through the same thing as the devs behind Flick Solitaire, for instance. You can read about their full experience here.
What now?
Now, I'll follow the wisdom of the Flick Solitaire devs. I'll release a mobile version of my game on Play Store/Apple Store and hope that they won't blindly allow the censorship of LGBTQ+ content. It might still take me a few days/weeks cause there's some work to do, but I'll do my best to finish it as soon as possible.
And for PRIDE...
I'd like to remind you that I am queer, and I am PROUD of it; I SEE you, and that's why I'm always doing my best to create stories and spaces in which everyone can BE and BE LOVED for who they really are.
I know it's only a small thing, but I won't stop, and I'll do my best to make sure my stories can be a place of comfort and acceptance for us.
With Pride so close, I want to use this opportunity to remind you all that there's still much we need to do for our community across the globe.
So, if you want, please share a local org that helps queer people in your country/city, so we all can spread the word and help if we can!!! ❤️✨
I'll start with two orgs in Brazil and one in Spain that do a beautiful work for the community and that could definitely use the help:
Casa Florescer, in São Paulo (only accepts donation through the Brazilian app PicPay) - Shelters Trans People in São Paulo and offers not only a place to sleep, but also therapy and workshops.
Casa Flores, also in São Paulo - to help people who are in a place of social/judicial vulnerability, including LGBTQ+ people
Fundación Triángulo - an NGO acting all across Spain to promote equality and protect the LGBTQ+ community
If you feel like it, please share yours too, and I'll make sure to update this post and add them to the list. ♥
And don't forget the companies that allowed them to hurt us... but don't despair.
Cause every time they try to erase us, we'll grow stronger together. :))))
Hi hi, I was just wondering if you have like a time frame or estimate of when the 2nd game will be coming out?
hii, anon!
funny you'd ask, cause i was just getting ready to post about it here on Tumblr too, hahaha xD
If you want to read more about the new supporters' build, take a peek on the WIP of a new sprite, and see what you can expect from the first scenes of the game, please check my free posts on Patreon or Ko-fi.
❤️ Patreon/Ko-fi members can already claim their keys to the very first supporters' build of WtDLtK ❤️
The first supporters' build will be available for download on June 1st, but if you're a member on ko-fi/Patreon, you can already claim your key and get everything ready for the download on Monday ;))
And the Public build?
I'm aiming to release the public build in August/September. As soon as I'm 100% sure about the date, i'll let you all know! ❤️💕
Hello sorry to bother you, but i was wondering if you had colored references for the ltgbtk characters? I tend to draw in color and I wanna make sure that the characters skin, hair, etc. are accurate.
hi anon! not a bother at all; thank you so much for being mindful of that! ♥
here's a post with the skin colors for the main cast, but you can also use this image for ref, if you want:
this would be like... in a room with neutral light during winter (so the absolute lightest their skin can get)
also, just as a curiosity cause SUMMER :))) (and cause the next game will involve a lot of walking outdoors), i often picture Mand and Mel with darker skin after a tan :3 they looove to tan in summer. Matt hates being sweaty nowadays, so he hides from the sun most of the time, but he too can get a very pretty tan shade when he braves the (actually pretty mild) heat in Opala ♥♥♥

Is Mandreis adopted or do they have different parents to their siblings? They get upset about being called a bastard and their loves and hates specify their biological mother's face which made me curious.
hi, anon!
All your DC knows is that Mand is the child of King Elias + a mysterious woman that no one but King Elias knew much about.
in Five Kingdoms, adoption and surrogacy are veeeery common, but there is a very long and bureaucratic process that people usually go through for that, mainly among nobles. Filtchen, for instance, was originally brought to the castle to be a surrogate when Elias and Yvana decided they wanted another child (Melike). after maaany years living there, getting close to the Queen, learning how to navigate the court, learning alchemy with Curio against Elias's orders, sleeping with Yvana and being closely looked after, """the court approved""" the surrogacy, and she got pregnant.
but since surrogacy/adoption are so common and well-accepted by everyone, "bastards" are seen as an even bigger betrayal not only of the deceived part of the relationship, but of the court and country. the reason why the court/some nobles call Mand a bastard is (supposedly) cause, despite Elias and Yvana's claims that they had a surrogate and that Yvana was aware of the pregnancy, there was no legal/public process as proof of that, like what happened for Melike, and no one in court actually *remembers* who Mand's mother is.
they all kinda *think* they *might* remember a sharp woman who stayed in Opala for a year as a guest, but no one in court can actually recall her name, face, or if she was real to begin with. Elias took her identity to the grave.
and the reason why it bothers Mand so deeply is cause 1, they know this is just another way the court found to make Yvana and Elias's lives (and then Mand's life, when they were old enough to understand) a living hell... and 2, cause it touches a self-worth-shaped wound deep within them that will still take a lot of time and work to heal. :) ♥
I just randomly stumbled upon rise of the bloodchemist on itch.io, played it, loved it so much, tried to find out if there is going to be any updates and found out there is a whole other game with mathias. can't wait to read that now and this whole blog. need them all.
oh wow, that's amazing! haha i'm so happy you enjoyed RoTBC! I hope you'll have fun with the main game too ♥♥♥
Now that I'm thinking about it, does the DC have a surname? I was thinking about how they would introduce themselves with the Jal, Jan, Jay. Would they just introduce themselves as The Dragon Commander and add what pronouns they use?
Hiii Niko!
nope, no surname for our DCs yet. ;)))
i *thought* i had answered an ask about surnames/introductions in Five Kingdoms, but now i can't find it 🥺 for the introductions, that's more or less it, yep! (here's a post that explains Jal/Jan/Jay for those who didn't see it)
the order of it all can be swapped around without problems btw, depending on what your DC wants to bring attention to:
"I'm Jal Adriane, Dragon Commander--" or "Adriane Jal, Dragon Commander," or "Dragon Commander Jal Adriane" or just "Adriane Jal" etc etc. people would take notice of the order/contents and be more/less formal because of it.
[ Title > (optional "address articles") > name ] would be the most formal option and [ name > (optional "address articles") ], without the title, would be the less formal.
we didn't see much of that in the first game cause everyone already knew each other and there was an attack happening hahahaha XD but the second game will have many more opportunities for social formalities! ♥
